Digital envelope detector for blood pressure measurement using an oscillometric method

Blood pressure measurement in the finger artery offers some advantages compared with that in the brachial artery. However, volume oscillometric signals obtained from finger artery measurement are often influenced by motion artefact due to respiration, speaking, involuntary or voluntary movement, etc. In this paper, we developed a digital envelope detector to detect the maximum oscillation criterion in blood pressure measurement for the first time. The digital envelope detector is robust to noise signals generated by motion artefact and filters out the carrier frequency efficiently. To verify the feasibility of our method, we measured blood pressure for eight subjects using our developed system. The results were compared with the auscultation method. In the case of using a digital envelope detector, we could reduce the mean difference error and standard deviation by 30-40%. Our proposed digital envelope detector is a useful tool to improve the accuracy of blood pressure measurement in finger artery.

Mixed pixel classification is different from spatial-based image classification in the sense that the former deals with abundance fractional images resulting from mixed pixels as opposed to classification maps produced by the latter. As a result, mixed pixel classification is generally carried out by visual inspection on the generated abundance fractional images. Consequently, it can be very subjective and vary with different human interpretations. Under such circumstance, it is difficult to substantiate an algorithm and conducting a comparative analysis is impossible. This paper presents one histogram-based approach to thresholding abundance fractional images. It thresholds an abundance fractional image into a binary image using a probability of confidence as a threshold value.

The research applies space-time adaptive processing (STAP) techniques to a pseudo-circular array generated by selectively thinning a rectangular array. A hybrid approach incorporating elevation interferometry and STAP techniques is used. Results show the thinned 16-element pseudo-circular array offers significant detection performance improvement over the baseline factored time-space (FTS) technique operating on a linear array, e.g., an 8-element horizontal linear array. Results are demonstrated for cases with and without range ambiguous clutter. This performance level is achieved using a factor of M less sample support than required for full adaptivity where M represents the number of pulses within a coherent processing interval.

Thepaper proposes a novel method for content-based search in a database of VRML 3D models. The proposed technique is based on a querying-by-3D-model approach. A set of shape-based descriptors are extracted from the reference 3D model and compared to the corresponding descriptors of the VRML models contained in the database. The descriptors used vary from simple geometric measurements such as the aspect ratio or a binary 3D shape mask to more complex and sophisticated shape-based criteria such as the edge paths of each 3D model. Similarity measures are then introduced for the specific descriptors and introduced into a 3D model-matching algorithm. Experimental results are presented, evaluating the performance of the proposed method.

We developed a finger type blood pressure measurement system using a volume oscillometric algorithm. The digital envelope detection filter (EDF) method was applied to volume oscillometric signals which were acquired from an air-filled occlusive finger cuff. In the case of using the EDF, we could reduce the difference error and standard deviation by 30-40%.

The edge and motion are the main features that human visual system (HVS) perceives intensively. This paper proposes an algorithm for the segmentation of the moving object with accurate boundary using color and motion focusing on the HVS perception in the general image sequence. The proposed algorithm is composed of three parts: color segmentation, motion analysis, and region refinement and merging part. In the color segmentation phase, K-Means algorithm is used in consideration of the sensitivity of the human color perception to get the boundaries that HVS perceives. The global and local motion estimation are performed in parallel with color analysis. After that, Bayesian clustering using color and motion provides more accurate boundary. In the final stage, regions are merged taking into account their motion. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm show the accurate moving object boundary coinciding with the boundary that HVS perceives. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

We develop a framework for efficiently encoding predictive error frames (PEF) as part of a rate scalable, wavelet-based video compression algorithm. We investigate the use of rate-distortion analysis to determine the significance of coefficients in the wavelet decomposition. Based on this analysis, we allocate the bit budget assigned to a PEF to the coefficients that yield the largest reduction in distortion, while maintaining the embedded and rate scalable properties of our video compression algorithm.

This study investigates the capacity of quantum neural networks (QNNs) to function as fuzzy classifiers. For this purpose, QNNs are compared with multilayer feedforward neural networks (FFNNs). The experiments are performed on two-dimensional speech data and investigate a variety of issues involved in the training of QNNs. This experimental study verifies that QNNs are capable of representing and quantifying the uncertainty inherent in the training data. It is also shown that simple post-processing of the QNN outputs makes QNNs an attractive alternative to conventional FFNNs for pattern classification applications.

Video object segmentation for object based video coding according to MPEG-4 should be able to combine many features of the image sequence to achieve high quality object segmentation. The significant features include color, motion vector and change information. This paper presents an object segmentation algorithm where the image features are combined for use in the segmentation process. A fast recursive shortest spanning tree (FRSST) algorithm is used to segment the image into different intensity regions because of the good image segmentation performance and the fast algorithm. Motion vectors are estimated from consecutive frames and searched by thresholding hierarchical block matching (HBM) which require low computation and give acceptable results. After that many features are integrated in the segmentation decision process. Then, the postprocessing refines the final segmentation output. The results from some test sequences especially in a video conference sequence have a good performance and show the object of interest boundary clearly.
