The editors of this Special Issue of the IEEE Transactions on plasma Science (TPS) are pleased to present an issue that documents a wide range of topics being actively studied within the field of Pulsed Power Science and technology (PPST). Many of the articles contributed to this issue are from the participants of either the 20th IEEE Pulsed Power Conference (PPC 2015) or the 26th IEEE Symposium on Fusion engineering, which were jointly held May 31 through June 4, 2015 in Austin, TX, USA ( http://***/ppcsofe2015/ ). Each respective conference has a long history of serving their community as gathering forums for the presentation and discussion of their field’s research topics.

This paper presents a novel extended multi-structure local binary pattern (EMSLBP) approach for high-resolution image classification, generalizing the well-known local binary pattern (LBP) approach. In the proposed EMSLBP approach, three-coupled descriptors with multi-structure sampling are proposed to extract complementary features (pixel value and radial difference) from local image patches. The anisotropic features derived from elliptical sampling are also rotation invariant by averaging the histograms over rotational angles and combined with the isotropic features extracted from circular sampling. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively capture local spatial pattern and local contrast, consistently outperforming several state-of-the-art classification algorithms.

Improving the channel utilization is a significant issue to enhance the performance in WLAN. This paper presents, Pillow Talks MAC (PT-MAC), a novel spectrum sharing mechanism to create an extra channel (pt-channel) for client- to-client transmission in WLAN. Obviously, The basic chal- lenge in our proposal is how pt-channel works concurrently and transparently with AP transmissions. To address the issue, in PT-MAC, selected clients are allowed to contend for pt-channel during uplink transmissions and talk freely under the ongoing downlink transmissions. Based on ad- vanced physical techniques, pt-channel transmitter receives and forwards the AP signals simultaneously within OFDM cyclic prefix, resulting in mixed signals are overheard by re- ceiver in pt-channel. However, the mixed message can be re- covered by pt-decoding system. Simulations and analytical results show that, PT-MAC reuses the spectrum in WLAN and achieves a throughput gain as large as 92% with similar fairness, when the ratio of downlink traffic is about 80%. © 2015 ACM.

Recently, we have proposed a general adaptation scheme for deep neural network based on discriminant condition codes and applied it to supervised speaker adaptation in speech recognition based on either frame-level cross-entropy or sequence-level maximum mutual information training criterion [1, 2, 3, 4]. In this case, each condition code is associated with one speaker in data, which is thus called speaker code for convenience. Our previous work has shown that speaker code based methods are quite effective in adapting DNNs even when only a very small amount of adaptation data is available. However, we have to use a large speaker code size and complex processes to obtain the best ASR performance since good initializations of speaker codes and connection weights are very important. In this paper, we propose a method using singular value decomposition (SVD) as in [5] to initialize speaker codes and connection weights to obtain a comparable ASR performance as before but with a smaller speaker code size and much less computation complexity. Meanwhile, we have evaluated unsupervised speaker adaptation with the proposed method in large vocabulary speech recognition in the Switchboard task. Experimental results have shown that it is effective for providing well initializations and suitable in adapting large DNN models. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, we study the secrecy performance of a cellular network, where a device-to-device (D2D) communication shares the spectral resources with a multi-antenna base station (BS). By assuming known the channel state information (CSI) of the legitimate user and using the maximal ratio transmission (MRT) at the BS, we first derive a closed-form expression of the ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) for the wiretap channel as well as the ergodic capacity (EC) for the D2D link. Then, we present a simple yet efficient power allocation scheme to maximize the secrecy performance while satisfying the D2D transmission requirement. Finally, numerical results are given to demonstrate the merit of our study, concluding that the interference from the D2D communication can be exploited as a friendly jammer to enhance the security transmission in cellular networks.

Cluster analysis is important in scientific and industrial fields. In this study, we proposed a novel chaotic biogeography-based optimization(CBBO) method, and applied it in centroid-based clustering methods. The results over three types of simulation data showed that this proposed CBBO method gave better performance than chaotic particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, firefly algorithm, and quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization. In all, our CBBO method is effective in centroid-based clustering.

In this paper, we focus on the widely-used radix-22 Decimation-In-Frequency (DIF) Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm. A variable-length, controllable-precision FFT processor is proposed. The processor can perform 16, 64, 256 and 1024 point FFT/IFFT and provide flexible wordlength scaling modes for different FFT stages. Thus, the processor is suitable for different precision and FFT length requirements in various applications. Aiming at high throughput performance, single-path delay feedback (SDF) pipeline architecture is adopted. The design is testified on Xilinx Virtex6 xc6vcx240t FPGA. Accordingly, we make a clear comparison between the proposed design and Xilinx FFT v7.1. Our design achieves better signal-to-quantizationnoise ratio (SQNR) property and shorter pipeline latency. Meanwhile, the occupied resource is approximately the same. Moreover, SQNR performance of different FFT length and wordlength scaling modes is analysed.
