In this paper, a fast fixed-point simulation technology is proposed for a multi-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system. The overall computations in the SAR imaging algorithm is explicitly analysed. FFT operations account for most memory consumption in the imaging flow. Accordingly, a fixed-point FFT algorithm is adopted due to the trade-off between precision and memory occupation of the FPGA implementation. Furthermore, this paper describes an optimized word-length configuration method based on theoretical analysis of architecture of Radix-22 FFT. This methodology is verified in a SystemC development environment due to its superiority of fast and bit-accurate system-level simulation capability. Finally, the proposed SystemC based fixed-point imaging algorithm and the Matlab based floating-point imaging algorithm are both conducted to process point array target raw data. Peak side-lobe ratio (PSLR) and integrated side-lobe ratio (ISLR) is evaluated. Experimental results indicate that profiles in the two cases do not differ greatly, which validates that the proposed fixedpoint algorithm with less resources occupation has comparable accuracy and can meet system requirements.

In this paper the performance of a new feature set, Locally Normalized Cepstral Coefficients (LNCC) is evaluated for a speaker verification task with short testing utterances in additive noise. The results presented here show that LNCC outperforms baseline MFCC features when SNR is lower than 15 dB. The average relative reduction in EER achieved by LNCC is 33%. The use of LNCC in combination with spectral subtraction provides a reduction in EER averaging 18% when compared to MFCC features also with spectral subtraction. In addition, sub-band LNCC is proposed to improve the estimation of noise energy and hence the effectiveness of spectral subtraction. When compared with MFCC features, the use of sub-band LNCC led to greater reductions in EER than LNCC with non-stationary noise. Copyright © 2015 ISCA.

Cluster analysis is important in scientific and industrial fields. In this study, we proposed a novel chaotic biogeography-based optimization (CBBO) method, and applied it in centroid-based clustering methods. The results over three types of simulation data showed that this proposed CBBO method gave better performance than chaotic particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, firefly algorithm, and quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization. In all, our CBBO method is effective in centroid-based clustering.

Coordination among users is inevitable in wireless communication for efficient medium access. Even though the data rate of individual user increases significantly, the performance of wireless network does not grow up accordingly due to the high MAC coordination overhead. In this paper, we present VFA, namely virtual frame aggregation, to achieve high coordination efficiency by amortizing the overhead over multiple transmissions. VFA provides a novel way to construct a winner cluster and allow the winners to transmit without interruption. Specifically, in a multicarrier network, every contending node chooses a subcarrier and the nodes are ordered by the index of the chosen subcarrier. When there are some subcarriers chosen by two or more nodes, an additional slot is exploited to reorder the collided nodes. Finally, all ordered nodes form a cluster and the transmissions are issued sequentially and uninterruptedly. Simulation results show that usually two slots are enough to construct a sufficiently large winner cluster. Moreover, VFA achieves a notable throughput gain over IEEE 802.11 as high as 120% with better fairness under various scenarios.

This paper analyzes the transient electromagnetic, thermal, and structural behavior of the stator turns in a simple helical magnetic flux compression generator (MFCG). The main objective is to quantify the losses due to Ohmic heating and flux trapping in the conductors, including the effect of armature motion and armature proximity on the current distribution. The electric current excitation used in the modeling is based on experimental data from tests on a research MFCG. The electromagnetic (EM) and thermal analyses were conducted using EMAP3D, a 3D finite element analysis (FEA) code developed at The University of Texas at Austin (UT), which has the capability to model relative motion and sliding between conductors. Structural analyses were conducted using a version of DYNA3D that allows state data from EMAP3D to be used as input. Details of the analyses include temperature dependence on electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. © 2002 IEEE.

In China, the expressway isn’t free. When a vehicle exits, the exit toll station needs to calculate the toll according to the vehicle trajectory obtained by sending a trajectory query task to the trajectory center remotely. For the accurate of toll and keep the exit smoothly, transmitting the trajectory result reliably and in time is a key issue. There are three heterogenous networks in expressway, Fibernet, Telecommunications Network and 3G. We concurrently exploit three heterogenous networks by allocating the trajectory result into three sub-flows where each sub-flow is transmitted in one kind of networks. But existing multipath transfer solution(FMTCP) doesn’t consider the difference of completed time among all sub-flows and can’t make sure the completed time in time. Therefore, we formulate the sub-flows schedule as a integer programming problem, which is proved to be NP-hard problem, and propose a Completion time-aware Flow Scheduling scheme (CaFS) which calculates the size of sub-flows. For the reliably, it exploits generation-based network coding. For the transmission in time, CaFS allocates the size of sub-flow into suitable generation and scheduling the generations. The simulation results demonstrate that, comparing with the FMTCP, CaFS improves 31. 9% in completion time and 30% in task finished rate. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Gabor features have been used widely in face identification because of their good results and robustness. However, face identification is strongly affected when the test images are very different from those of the gallery, as is the case in varying face pose. In this paper, a new 2D Gabor-based method is proposed that modifies the grid from which the Gabor features are extracted using a mesh to model face deformations produced by varying pose. Also the Gabor filter kernels are modified by the deformation field computed using the active shape model adjusted to the face. Therefore, the position of the Gabor jets with respect to the face features (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) is closer to the original position in the frontal face and the modified Gabor filter kernel adjusts to the varying pose. Our method incorporates blocks for illumination compensation by a Local Normalization method, and entropy-weighted Gabor features to emphasize those features that yield proper identification. The method was assessed on the FERET database including pose variations for ±60°, ±40°, ±25°, ±15°, and 0°. We compared our results to those previously published for 2D methods. Our proposed method achieved the highest classification accuracy on the FERET database.

A novel hybrid optimization algorithm and its application in solving complex problem

Ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is a new heuristic algorithm which has been demonstrated a successful technology and applied to solving complex optimization problems. But the ACO exists the low solving precision and premature convergence problem, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is introduced to improve performance of the ACO algorithm. A novel hybrid optimization (HPSACO) algorithm based on combining collaborative strategy, particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization is proposed for the traveling salesman problems in this paper. The HPSACO algorithm makes use of the exploration capability of the PSO algorithm and stochastic capability of the ACO algorithm. The main idea of the HPSACO algorithm uses the rapidity of the PSO algorithm to obtain a series of initializing optimal solutions for dynamically adjusting the initial pheromone distribution of the ACO algorithm. Then the parallel search ability of the he ACO algorithm are used to obtain the optimal solution of solving problem. Finally, various scale TSP are selected to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed HPSACO algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed HPSACO algorithm takes on the better search precision, the faster convergence speed and avoids the stagnation phenomena. © 2015 SERSC.

Hybrid orthogonal projection and estimation (HOPE): a new framework to learn neural networks

In this paper, we propose a novel model for high-dimensional data, called the Hybrid Orthogonal Projection and Estimation (HOPE) model, which combines a linear orthogonal projection and a finite mixture model under a unified generative modeling framework. The HOPE model itself can be learned unsupervised from unlabelled data based on the maximum likelihood estimation as well as discriminatively from labelled data. More interestingly, we have shown the proposed HOPE models are closely related to neural networks (NNs) in a sense that each hidden layer can be reformulated as a HOPE model. As a result, the HOPE framework can be used as a novel tool to probe why and how NNs work, more importantly, to learn NNs in either supervised or unsupervised ways. In this work, we have investigated the HOPE framework to learn NNs for several standard tasks, including image recognition on MNIST and speech recognition on TIMIT. Experimental results have shown that the HOPE framework yields significant performance gains over the current state-of-the-art methods in various types of NN learning problems, including unsupervised feature learning, supervised or semi-supervised learning.

In smart grid, privacy implications to individuals and their family is an important issue, due to the fine-grained usage data collection. Wireless communications are considered by many utility companies to obtain information. Network coding is exploited in smart grids, to enhance network performance in terms of throughput, delay, robustness, and energy consumption. However, Network Coding introduces new challenge for privacy preserving due to the encoding of packet in forwarder nodes. We propose a distributed privacy preserving scheme for network coding in smart grid, which considers the converged flows character of smart grid and exploits a homomorphic encryption function to decrease the complex in forwarder node. The message content of packet is encrypted and the tag of packet is encrypted by homomorphic encryption function. Then the forwarder node linear random codes the encrypted message contents and directly processes the tags cryptotext based on the homomorphism feature. It offers message content confidentiality privacy preserving feature, which can efficiently thwart traffic analysis. Extensive security analysis and performance evaluations demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed scheme. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
