Security constrained economic dispatch (SCED) is an important tool for ISOs/RTOs to achieve economic power system operation in day-ahead and real-time markets. However, the wind generation uncertainty varying within a large range may make the SCED model unsolvable under certain scenarios. Thus, curtailment is utilized in this work to avoid the infeasibility in the presence of wind power uncertainty. It is found that the uncertainty set is affected by the curtailment restriction which is modeled as an interval number. By the use of interval arithmetic and big M approach, we construct a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) with the objective of minimizing the total curtailment costs, while guaranteeing the SCED to be feasible when wind power varies within its uncertainty set. Numerical results from a 118-bus test system over 24 time periods verifiy the effectiveness of this proposed method.

In value-based transmission planning, market efficiency and associated economic benefits can be achieved from transmission solutions that reduce system congestions. However, to accrue the most value and design the most cost effective transmission solution, it is beneficial to understand the interactions among congested flowgates and strategically address selected congestion issues collectively rather than individually. This paper proposes two methods to group congested flowgates: correlation method and OTDF method. The proposed methods have been applied to MISO system to demonstrate the effectiveness. Simulation results using hourly chronological SCUC/SCED tool show that up to 370% synergic benefits can be realized if identified groups of congested flowgates are addressed at the same time. The proposed methods are easy to implement, and have great computational advantage over existing simulation-based exhaustive method.

Installation of a large number of small sources called distributed generation creates many problems in proper control of national (and European) power grid. At the same time new technologies especially power electronics and measurement data computing associated with smart grid allows to use better and conscious these distributed sources. This paper describes what problems the distributed generation may cause, how this is mitigated and how the smart grid approach may take advantage of specific characteristic of distributed sources for ensuring more reliable quality of supply. © 2011 IEEE.

When analyzing the quality of electrical power delivered to customers many parameters are considered. However the fundamental issue is the presence of voltage and its reliability and continued presence. power systems all over the world experience big power failures from time to time leading to a total lack of voltage over a large area - called blackouts. This paper presents an automated method for preventing such a voltage collapse. This method calculates reactive power needed to mitigate the grid and points out the weak nodes where reactive power should be injected. This method was successfully applied and tested on the polish transmission network. © 2011 IEEE.

Paper deals with calculation and design of the heat pumps that are used for purposes of heating and cooling. Heat pumps are systems that draw heat from one source (earth, water, air or ambient) and transfer it to another. Their operation is described by Carnot circular process, in which thermal energy is taken from one body to working medium and then from a working medium to the heated body. Energy put in the process is equal to the energy needed for moving and compression of the working medium. Authors have calculated that average energy input is equal to 1/4 of useful thermal energy (output). Further on in the paper the working principle of the heat pumps and their main parts are described. © 2011 INESC Coimbra.

On-line dynamic security assessment has grown in popularity in recent years due to the need to deal with the ever-increasing challenges of secured system operation. In on-line security assessment systems, a snapshot of the actual system condition is captured and analytical engines are used to assess security in near-real-time. This has greatly reduced the uncertainties previously introduced by forecasting required in conventional off-line operational studies. Basic on-line VSA systems are now quite mature (Phase 1), and new features and functions are in development including more comprehensive analyses and artificial intelligence that can be used to assist the operators in maintain secure systems (Phase 2). The paper presents a highly automated method identifying voltage control areas, areas prone to voltage instability, and reactive power reserves requirement ensuring voltage stability under all considered contingencies. During the completion of Phase 1 of the VCA project testing of the VCA software was limited to powerflow models of the polish power grid operator (PSE) system. A detailed description of the operational difficulties is provided. Conclusions, repairs and prevention undertaking are also described. © 2011 Institute of Electrical power.
