Effect of Mixing Strategy on the Structure-Properties of the PLA/PBAT Blends Incorporated with CNC

Polylactide(PLA)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)(PBAT)blend nanocomposites including 3 wt%of cel-lulose nanocrystals(CNCs)were prepared by melt compounding method in a twin-screw extruder and an inter-nal *** nanocomposites were formulated by diluting three different masterbatches prepared by solution casting method that contained 7 wt%of *** masterbatches were:(m1)PLA/PBAT/CNC masterbatch;(m2)PLA/CNC masterbatch;and(m3)PBAT/CNC *** were to explore how different prepara-tion methods affect the dispersion and localization of CNC and hence the properties of PLA/PBAT/CNC blend *** electron microscopy(SEM)was used to study the structural changes of the *** properties of PLA/PBAT blends and PLA/PBAT/CNC blend nanocomposites were also *** the samples prepared by internal mixer,the rheological behavior of blend nanocomposite prepared through premixing of CNC particles with PLA showed a transition from liquid-like to a gel-like *** to the rheological results and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)analysis,it was found that the CNC overall enhanced the viscoelastic properties of blends and improved the PLA crystallization,*** mechanical analysis(DMA)illustrated that the incorporation of CNC also enhanced the elastic modulus of PLA/PBAT blends specifically above the glass transition temperature of *** expected improvements in mechanical properties did not occur due to the possible existence of residual solvent in the blends.

Advanced ceramics are valued for their exceptional mechanical and electrical properties, which can be further improved by incorporating micro and nanostructures as reinforcements. Carbon allotropes such as carbon nanotubes and graphene have been widely utilized in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) to enhance fracture toughness and electrical conductivity. However, challenges like nanocarbon agglomeration and weak interfacial bonding with ceramics often hinder their effectiveness. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a promising alternative due to their carbon-rich structure, which can be carbonized and homogeneously integrated into ceramic matrices. In this study, we propose a novel approach by directly growing ZIF-67 MOF crystals around yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanoparticles to achieve a more uniform distribution compared to conventional physical mixing methods. The resulting YSZ/ZIF-67 composites, fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS), exhibited a 44 % increase in fracture toughness, attributed to the refined microstructure and the energy-wasting of crack by deflection and bridging effect of the derived nanocarbons. Additionally, electrical conductivity improved by 9 orders of magnitude, benefiting from the percolation network formed by carbonized ZIF-67. Structural analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy, confirmed the successful incorporation and uniform distribution of nanocarbons within the ceramic matrix. These findings demonstrate that MOF-derived carbon structures can significantly enhance both the mechanical and electrical performance of ceramic composites, offering potential applications in energy storage, electronic devices, and structural materials. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Dense carbon nanofiber self-supporting electrode fabricated by orientation/compaction strategy for high volumetric lithium storage capacity

Low bulk density greatly restricts the large-scale application of electrospun carbon-based fiber membrane as electrode in energy storage devices. To solve the above challenges, herein an orientation-compaction densification strategy is proposed to enhance the bulk density and volumetric capacity of PAN-based carbon nanofiber membranes as self-supporting electrode used in lithium-ion batteries（LIBs）. Specifically, highly-oriented fibers are achieved by high-speed roller collecting during electrospinning, and compaction densification is conducted by hot-pressing treatment. The effects of collecting speed and hot-pressing pressure on the morphology, conductivity,bulk density, tensile strength, and flexibility of the obtained carbon nanofiber membrane are *** to conventional fiber membranes, of which fibers are disorderly stacked, the oriented fiber membrane is much easier to achieve dense stacking by compaction. The obtained dense carbon nanofiber membrane demonstrates a bulk density of 0.566 g cm-3, and shows a significantly-enhanced volumetric capacity(318.3 mA h cm-3), high-rate performance(86.6 mA h cm-3at 5 A g-1), and satisfactory cycling stability when used as selfsupporting electrode of LIBs.

Temperature-dependent microstructural evolution in a compositionally complex solid electrolyte:The role of a grain boundary transition

Compositionally complex solid electrolyte(Li_(0.375)Sr_(0.4375))(Ta_(0.375)Nb_(0.375)Zr_(0.125)Hf_(0.125))O_(3)(LSTNZH)samples are synthesized using different sintering temperatures,durations,and cooling conditions(furnace cooling(FC)*** quenching(AQ)).The temperature-dependent grain growth has been examined to investigate the microstructural evolution and the origin of exaggerated(abnormal)grain *** moderate temperatures,the grain growth of LSTNZH follows a cubic root growth model with an Arrhenius temperature *** increasing temperature,bimodal microstructures develop,and the Arrhenius temperature dependence breaks ***,increasing the temperature induces increased Nb segregation at general grain boundaries(GBs),in contrast to classical GB segregation models but suggesting premelting-like GB disordering,which can explain the observed abnormal grain growth(AGG).In addition,the large grains become faceted with increasing temperature,which occurs concurrently with the temperature-induced transitions in GB segregation and grain growth,thereby further supporting the occurrence of a GB phase-like(complexion)*** impacts on the densification,ionic conductivity,and hardness are also *** work provides a new insight into the fundamental understanding of the grain growth mechanisms of the emergent class of medium-and high-entropy compositionally complex ceramics(CCCs),which is essential for tailoring microstructures and material properties.

Effect of curing temperature of phthalonitrile resin on the properties of resultant hierarchical porous carbon

Heteroatom-doped porous carbon materials have been widely studied due to their high specific surface area and high heteroatom content,but it is difficult to achieve high specific surface area and high heteroatom content at the same ***,a simple method is introduced to prepare N/O co-doped hierarchical porous carbon materials(DNZKs).Phthalonitrile resins(DNZs)were prepared by using 1,3-bis(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)benzene as raw material and ZnCl_(2)/urea as composite curing agent,and then using KOH as activator to successfully prepare DNZKs with high specific surface area,developed pores and high N/O *** porous carbon material(DNZK@400)obtained at a curing temperature of 400℃ has the highest N content(4.97%(mass)),a large specific surface area(2026 m^(2)·g^(-1)),a high micropore proportion(0.9),a high O content(7.53%(mass)),and the best specific capacitance(up to 567 F·g^(-1) at 0.1 A·g^(-1)),which can be attribute to the high temperature resistance of the nitrogencontaining aromatic heterocyclic structure in *** the mass ratio of resin and KOH is 1:1,the specific capacitance of the sample tested by the acid three-electrode system is obtained,and it is found that the material has high cycling stability(119%specific capacitance retention after 100,000 cycle tests).This work proposes a simple and easy-to-operate method for the preparation of multifunctional porous carbon.

Traditional water quality monitoring systems (WQMS) are often outdated and lack the intelligence to provide real-time analysis and alerts. This paper proposes a smart water quality monitoring system using a Raspberry Pi as the control unit, integrated with various sensors (pH, TDS, temperature, turbidity, and flow) for data collection. The system uses GSM and WiFi modules for data transmission to a cloud database, where machine learning algorithms analyze the data, providing alerts and predictions. Currently, this project is in the development phase. The data is collected successfully from a single water source and displayed on the Raspberry Pi screen, providing real-time monitoring of key water quality parameters. The next phase involves the integration of AI and machine learning, which is still under development. This will enhance the system's ability to process data, detect anomalies, and make accurate predictions about water quality. © 2024 IEEE.

Thermoplastic polyurethane(PU)elastomers have attracted significant attention because of their many important industrial ***,the creation of fire-retardant and anti-dripping PU elastomers has remained a grant challenge due to the lack of crosslinking and weak interchain ***,we report a mechanically robust,biodegradable,fire-retardant,and anti-dripping biobased PU elastomer with excellent biodegradability using an abietic acid-based compound as hard segments and polycaprolactone diol(PCL)as soft segments,followed by physically crosslinking with cellulose nanocrystals(CNC)through dynamic *** resultant elastomer shows the balanced mechanical and fire-retardant properties,e.g.,a tensile strength and break strain of 9.1 MPa and 560%,a self-extinguishing ability(V-0 rating in UL-94 testing),and an anti-dripping ***,the as-developed PU can be completely degraded in 1.0 wt.%lipase solution at 37℃ in 60 days,arising from the catalytic and wicking effect of CNC on PU *** work provides an innovative and versatile strategy for constructing robust,fire-retardant,anti-dripping,and biodegradable PU elastomers,which hold great promise for practical applications in electronic and automobile sectors.
