To explore low dielectric polyimide, cellular polyimide films were prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride and 4, 4'-diaminodiphenyl ether via a combined technique of solution induced phase separation and thermal imidization. These polyimide films displayed good thermal stability. SEM analyses showed that the obtained polyimide films had various cellular structures with the different conditions, such as the composition and temperature of coagulation bath, staying time, etc. The films with sponge-like cellular structures exhibited lower dielectric constants than those with finger-like structures. When the film was prepared in the conditions the coagulation bath of DMAc/H2O of 20/80, the temperature of 25°C and the staying time of 20min, the film was full of sponge-like structure and its dielectric constant was low to 1.45.

We have investigated the MOVPE growth of In x Ga 1-x As metamorphic buffer layer (MBL) structures with a focus on techniques to improve the surface morphology and determine the influence of morphology on subsequently grown single-junction device structures. To improve the surface roughness of the underlying MBL, chemical-Mechanical Polishing (CMP) is employed and MOVPE regrowth of single-junction (SJ) solar cells on top of the polished surface is performed. AFM image analysis indicates the CMP process is effective in reducing the step-graded In x Ga 1-x As MBL surface roughness from ~7-10 nm (as-grown) to 2.3 nm post CMP. A post-CMP ozone/HF treatment was found to be effective in removing silica residue remaining on the surface from the CMP process, allowing for the growth of films on top of the MBL surface subjected to CMP. Improved short circuit current density (J sc ) and external quantum efficiency (QE) were obtained from SJ (1eV) devices which employ the CMP process compared with those on as-grown MBLs.

Abstract An artificial pancreatic β-cell based on multipartite zone model predictive control (Multi-Zone-MPC) is evaluated on the UVa FDA-accepted metabolic simulator. Multi-Zone-MPC provides different tunings for the MPC weights based on four regions of glycemia: hypoglycemia, normoglycemia, elevated glycemia, and hyperglycemia. Defining these four zones provides richer control tunings that result in safe and effective control. The controller predictions are based on an average ARX-model that is developed using data collected from a meal response of ten different in silico adult subjects. A comparison of Multi-Zone-MPC and standard Zone-MPC is conducted on 100 in silico adult subjects following a one meal scenario of 75g. Multi-Zone-MPC outperform Zone-MPC with low blood glucose index (LBGI) of 0.1 versus 0.5, respectively without any significant change of high blood glucose index (HBGI). The use of four control zones in the Multi-Zone-MPC is successfully demonstrated to be a better control strategy that reduces the postprandial peaks and at the same time avoids any hypoglycemia due to efficient insulin administration, hence, providing effective and safe glucose regulation to individuals with T1DM.

We report the origin of the effect of nanoscale confinement on the local viscosity of entangled polystyrene (PS) films at temperatures far above the glass transition temperature. By using marker x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy with gold nanoparticles embedded in the PS films prepared on solid substrates, we have determined the local viscosity as a function of the distance from the polymer-substrate interface. The results show the impact of a very thin adsorbed layer (∼7 nm in thickness) even without specific interactions of the polymer with the substrate, overcoming the effect of a surface mobile layer at the air-polymer interface and thereby resulting in a significant increase in the local viscosity as approaching the substrate interface.
