Poly[2, 6-diimidazo (4,5-b:4’,5’-e) pyridinylene-1,4(2,5-dihydroxy) phenylen] (PIPD) was synthesized and the obtained PIPD/ PPA dope was directly spun into fibers via a dry-jet wet-spinning process for the first time. The obtained polymers were mainly characterized by ATR-FTIR and dynamic contact angle analysis. FTIR spectrum of the PIPD fibers indicates that the product was consistent with the target product. The contact angle measurements show that the wetting process of water on PIPD fibers is apparently faster than that on PBO fibers. The axial compression bending test indicates that PIPD fibers showed larger compressive strength compared with that of PBO fibers under the same axial compressive load. Meanwhile, the TGA test results indicate that the PIPD fibers have excellent thermal stability.

Step-graded InGaP_ySb_(1-y) and In_xGa_(1-x)As metamorphic buffer layer (MBL) structures are grown on GaAs substrates by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). AFM analysis indicates that graded group V InGaP_ySb_(1-y) MBLs exhibit significantly lower surface roughness (~4.7nm) compared with more conventional graded group III In_xGa_(1-x)As MBLs, which typically have rms surface roughness in the range of 7-14nm. To reduce the surface roughness of the In_xGa_(1-x)As MBL, a post growth chemical-Mechanical Polishing (CMP) procedure is implemented. AFM image analysis indicates the CMP process is effective in reducing the step-graded In_xGa_(1-x)As MBL surface roughness from ~7.3 nm (as-grown) to 2.3 nm post CMP. Preliminary studies indicate that bulk InGaAs layers regrown on top of the MBL subjected to CMP exhibit improved static and transient PL characteristics compared with those deposited on as-grown MBLs.

We performed Brownian Dynamics simulations of multiblock copolymers of A and B polymers in a solvent selective for the A block at a volume fraction of 20%. Tri-, penta- and heptabocks were simulated. Fourier transformation reveals micellar clusters arranged in a BCC lattice, in agreement with scattering experiments. The clusters were analyzed using a percolation approach and we observed larger clusters when the outermost block was in the poor solvent condition. The ratio of number of loops to bridges decreases as the number of blocks in the copolymer increases, as does the polydispersity. Increased penalty of looping as the number of blocks increases leads to a larger number of smaller clusters with more bridges.
