The final coating structure is important in terms of coating gloss and opacity, print gloss, and ink setting characteristics. Much empirical experience has moved coatings towards optimum levels, but when there is a raw material change or grade change, there is much expense in predicting the final coating structure. Many recent computer models have advanced our abilities to predict coating structure from particle packing models, but little has been done to describe the calendering operation that is known to determine coating gloss. Here, a particle level model to describe the compression of pigments to simulate the calendering operation is proposed. Particles are placed into a structure with a drainage flow field and compressed with a row of particles that represent the calender surface. The results are compared to pilot scale experiments for two pigment size distributions. The gloss increase due to calendering and the pore size distributions are well predicted before and after calendering. The modeling technique should help predict the gloss response of coating suspensions with various pigment size distributions.

The wetting and dewetting behavior of polystyrene (PS) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) ionomers on silica surfaces were investigated. Low molecular weight PS (4 kg/mol) and PDMS (6 kg/mol) do not wet silica above their respective glass transition temperatures. However, spin-cast films of metal salts of sulfonated polystyrene and carboxylated PDMS resist dewetting even after annealing at elevated temperatures for > 140h. In this paper, we discuss the mechanisms of the effect of ion concentration, solvent used for casting and annealing on the surface morphology of ionomer films.

The analyses of the composition of a binary mixture composed of two kinds of industrial complicated materials have great importance for formulation in *** present paper provides a quantitative size exclusion chromatography (SEC) method based on the principle of absolute quantification of SEC to solve the problem. The conventional data treatment procedure for the differential refractive index (DRI) signal of SEC H(V) is improved first by dividing it with the injected sample weight and leads to a novel defined weight normalized distribution Hw(V) and its integral Iw(V). These two distributions reflect the response constant of the sample in addition to the conventional normalized distribution F(V). The difference of the average response constants of the composing components provides a sensitive method to compute the composition of their mixture from its Hw(V) or Iw(V). The method was applied to mixtures of a kind of industrial asphalt and paraffin diluents as an example, and successful results are obtained.

Ink tack on a press is known to influence printing operations and the quality of the final printed product. Much recent work has looked at the influence of coating structure on ink tack development, but less has been reported with regard to the influence of the press blanket texture on the separation forces at the nip exit. In this work, a rolling nip device, with a flush mounted pressure transducer, is used to measure the ink tack in a rolling nip that simulates the actual printing conditions. In this device, the rolls are loaded with a known force and then brought up to speed. The pressure pulses are recorded at each revolution. The influence of blanket type on the maximum and minimum pressures is reported. Rough blanket textures are found to correlate with smaller tack forces, but the pressure peak is not influenced. Tack magnitudes are found to also depend on speed and the type of fluid. The reduction of tack force with increase blanket texture is thought to be related to the earlier onset of cavitation at the nip exit.
