It is necessary to use sufficient lighting and HVAC system along with the protection to each building or houses. Proper lighting system is achieved by connecting the field devices or lights with controller and smart sensors. The controller is used to turn the lighting loads ON and OFF when the sensor input comes. Security of the building or house is achieved by installing an autonomous rover system with OV7670 Camera module. An autonomous rover is allowed to roam inside the house in all the room as per the pre taught or stored GPS positions. The motion of the rover is adjusted based on the obstacles, which are present in the motion path. The smoke sensor and OV7670 Camera module are installed in the top of the rove which is used to detect the fire and unauthorized entry of the person. OV7670 captured pictures are converted into pixels by Mean Square Error techniques. The sensor data are collected in the Arduino controller and the same is transmitted to the owner's smart phone via ESP2886 Wi-Fi Module. MQ2 smoke sensors are mounted over the rover for sensing the smoke and hazardous gas leakages. The buzzer or alarm will be activated when there is any security threatening inside the building by the controller. © 2024 IEEE.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has recently gained popularity over the conventional manufacturing methods as it allows for innovative design solutions in terms of geometric complexity and shape optimization. As a result of the geometry, size and heterogeneous microstructure of the AM samples, conventional macroscale experiments are, however, frequently inadequate in determining the resulting material parameters. In such cases, nanoindentation represents a viable non-destructive technique for determining the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus (EIT) and hardness (HIT) of small samples' volumes. The nanoindentation measurements on a Keysight G200 machine equipped with a standard Berkovich tip are performed in this study on AISI 316L wrought samples as well as samples obtained via the laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) AM process. The standard depth-controlled loadingunloading method is used. With the aim of comparing the material properties on the macro- and microscale, conventional monotonic uniaxial tensile tests are also performed on both samples types. The possibility of calibrating the material parameters of finite element (FE) numerical models using nanoindentation test results to obtain the load vs. the indentation depth curve is finally discussed. Experimentally obtained load-displacement curves are used to calibrate the elastic and plastic material parameters of the FE model. Since FE modelling of the nanoindentation process is a nonlinear elasto-plastic contact problem, Young's modulus and hardness alone are, in fact, not sufficient to characterize properly the overall material behaviour. © 2023 Euspen Headquarters.

Although various rating systems have been developed to promote sustainable development in roadway construction,sustainability evaluation from the perspective of safeguarding workers’health is currently *** approaches were used in the study to identify and prioritize key health hazards to workers in roadway construction,including bibliometric analysis,questionnaire survey and analytic hierarchy process(AHP).Bibliometric analysis indicates that submicron particles and polycyclic aromatic compounds are the primary concerns of researchers,and ergonomics also attracts some attention.A questionnaire survey was conducted among construction workers in *** results suggest that the most frequently encountered occupational disorders by roadway construction workers are musculoskeletal disorders,heat stroke,respiratory health issues and hearing loss,and the most commonly encountered hazards are noise,dust,asphalt fumes,heat stress and some adverse working *** on associations between the health hazards and disorders were *** there are some discrepancies between the AHP scores provided by two groups of professionals in China,the commonly agreed top occupational hazards include dust,asphalt fumes,noise,high-/low-temperature stresses and chronic *** findings may be incorporated into rating systems for roadway construction to encourage the industry to adopt better practices for the well-being of workers.

Higher education has been becoming increasingly globalized as a business. Currently, there are approximately 200 million University students worldwide, which is more than double the number from twenty years ago. According to several studies, this number will reach 263 million by 2025. In Italy, the structural shortage of beds barely covers 12% of the total, and there is a lack of around 100,000 beds to reach the European average. To face this emergency, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) has allocated 960 million Euros for new facilities for student housing, also through the enhancement of property assets in disuse. The present research addresses the issue outlined, by analyzing a case study on the economic feasibility of an investment in the recovery of a disused building for student housing. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the context of the maintenance of urban and extra-urban road infrastructures, the need to support Public Administrations in the selection of technological solutions able to, on one hand, pursue compliance with i) environmental issue, ii) urban planning and iii) protection of cultural and landscape heritage regulations, and, on the other hand, to be financially sustainable, is relevant. The aim of the present research concerns the definition of a methodological approach for the assessment of the parametric costs of innovative technological solutions, by taking into account their differentials compared to the traditional ones, i.e. the solutions generally applied in the considered contexts. With reference to twenty roads located into the city of Rome (Italy), assumed as case studies, the parametric costs for the traditional solutions and the innovative ones have been built, by evaluating all the working expenses that occur for their realization. Fragility curves of a gravity load designed r.c. hospital building: a case study

The awareness of the vulnerability of strategic structures such as hospitals is of primary importance as local governments have the necessity of a global overview of the seismic performance of these facilities, to decide how to best allocate funds for restorations. From this point of view, the fragility curves of a building represent a powerful tool that allows to assess the probability of exceeding a damage threshold (or a limit state). Such information is useful for the assessment of the structure, and for investigating the possibility to maintain functions during and immediately after earthquakes. In this paper the case study of an hospital facility is presented. The structure was analysed and verified by means of non-linear static analyses (Pushover) and incremental non-linear dynamic analyses (IDA). Furthermore, the fragility curves for four different damage levels (null, slight, moderate and severe) and two different seismic intensity measures were obtained.

The ongoing Industry 4.0 revolution is reshaping the construction sector, emphasising the growing importance of digital technologies for knowledge management. This transition is supported by Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems), promoting sustainable development and environmental protection. Through 3D modelling, geomatics enhances spatial data analysis with improved speed and precision. However, the high cost of terrestrial laser scanners necessitates more economical alternatives. This study contributes to defining an acquisition process across different platforms by presenting an innovative approach for 3D documentation of a barn and manure pit. The method combines images from a DJI Mavic Enterprise 3 drone with a GNSS-RTK antenna. Additionally, the study compares the accuracy and final product of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and Gaussian Splatting (GS) methods, using drone acquisition as the validation reference. The results show that NeRF and GS are similar in accuracy and produce a realistic final product but limited to the barn and manure pit retaining wall coverage. The volume calculation depends on the point density generated on the ground based on the number of shots and different angles. This paper has implications for the inventory of rural buildings and associated structures, offering an effective method for generating 3D models in the agricultural field. This technology can quickly document and evaluate the available space within agricultural structures, providing new insights into possible alternative uses and efficiencies. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Review of rules of mixture for effective elastic properties in fibrous and particulate composite materials

Micromechanics based models have been playing an important role in predicting the effective elastic properties of particulate and fibrous linearly elastic composite materials. This paper reviews the simplest most widely-used class of micromechanics models, the so-called rules of mixture, and aims to clarify various misconceptions in their applicability by providing concise derivations from both the mechanics-of-materials and continuum-mechanics approaches. The paper critically reviews the areas in which these analytical models can yield good predictions of effective elastic properties and various historical interventions when properties are underestimated. Besides, it illustrates a generalized framework able to justify their assumptions as lower and upper bounds for elastic properties, though of modest practical application when compared to more refined theories. Eventually, the position of these models with respect to classic assumptions of dilute dispersion is investigated and emphasized with reference to experimental data. © 2025 The Author
