It is shown that the classic Nyquist criterion can be extended in a straightforward way to feedback systems of fractional order. The proof of this extension merely requires basic notions of vector analysis and of closed-loop system transfer functions. The criterion can be used not only to ascertain the stability of a fractional-order system but also to detect the presence of closed-loop poles inside any given sector of the complex plane. The test is finally applied to three examples of didactic value. © 2020 IEEE.

The actual dynamic behavior of the masonry civic Clock tower in a little village, heavily damaged by the recent 2016 seismic sequence of central Italy, is thoroughly investigated by means of a detailed numerical model built and calibrated using the experimental modal properties obtained through Ambient Vibration Tests. The goal is to update the uncertain parameters of the Finite Element Model (elastic moduli, mass densities, constraints, and boundary conditions) to minimize the discrepancy between experimental and numerical dynamic features. Due to the high nonlinear dependency of the objective function of this optimization problem on the aforementioned parameters, and the likely possibility to get trapped in local minima, a fully automated Finite Element Model Updating procedure based on genetic algorithms and global optimization is used, leading to the successful estimation of the uncertain parameters of the tower. The results allowed to create a reference digital replica of the current structural condition of the tower and to set the performance standards that will help to optimize the control of the structural integrity over time.

The work deals with the analysis of effect of aircraft acoustics on human. In this study, measurement and analysis of cargo and fighter aircraft noise at close vicinity of a military airbase was done with sound measurement device. The results shows that noise level during takeoff and landing is greater than 85 dB and people living near to close vicinity of military airbase. To support this work, population-based questionnaire technique and a field study was designed. In population-based questionnaire study, 50 nearby residents were given the questionnaire and 45 residents returned back the filed questionnaire. This research included responses from long-term inhabitants of a military airfield. In addition, human individuals were subjected to three-day controlled research with 90-min sessions each day. Thirty volunteers took part in the field study and reported their opinions on irritation, speech interruption, and perception. The investigation reveals a substantial relationship between the total irritation response and the acceptance of aeroplane noise. The amount of responses demonstrates that people are severely or extremely irritated by aeroplane noise. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Flow-induced movements have been investigated for more than 20 years, especially in offshore platforms, where Vortex-Induced Movements (VIM) impact platform productivity, mooring lines, and risers fatigue life. However, monitoring these systems with standard methods (i.e. robots) is very expensive. In this work, a low-cost alternative is developed: we carried out experiments in the towing tank at The University of Tokyo (UTokyo), measuring the movements of a spar-type platform model with a low-cost Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The IMU application is beyond the computation of orientation: by measuring movements, displacement amplitudes and frequencies, we analyzed Flow-Induced Vibrations (FIV) in the spar model. The model was free to move in six degrees of freedom (6DOF), while its acceleration, rotation rate and magnetic field were recorded using the commercial IMU GY-87. A robust signal treatment methodology is developed based on the Kalman filter, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) filter, Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) decomposition, and coordinate manipulation using quaternion rotations, to remove drift and noise problems, and extract the model displacement in the three axes. The IMU application is evaluated by comparing its results with a high-accuracy optical tracking system, showing the potential of low-cost sensors for FIV analysis. Maximum amplitudes were found for cross-flow displacement at the reduced velocity VR = 10.13, with a significant amplitude of 0.7D for the IMU and 1D for the optical system. © 2023 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). A micro–macro model evaluating thermal treatment temperature effect on compressive failure of brittle rocks

Thermal treatment temperature strongly influences the compressive fracture mechanical properties of brittle rocks with many microcracks. However, the correlation between thermal treatment temperature, microcrack variation, and macroscopic compressive fracture properties is rarely established. A micro–macro model is suggested to evaluate the influence of thermal treatment temperature on the quasi-static compressive fracture relating to microcrack damage in brittle rocks. This model consists of the strain-crack relation, the wing crack model, and the proposed temperature-dependent initial damage and fracture toughness equations. The temperature-dependent equations of initial damage and fracture toughness are determined by the experimental data. The relationship curves between stress and strain are drawn under different temperatures. The effects of the thermal treatment temperature on the compressive strength, crack initiation stress, peak axial strain, and elastic modulus are studied. Sensitivities of the confining pressure and the size, friction, and angle of initial crack on the thermal treatment temperature-dependent compressive strength and crack initiation stress are discussed. The study results have an important role in the estimation of the stability of artificial underground engineering and the disaster of natural geology.

A GPU-ready pseudo-spectral method for direct numerical simulations of multiphase turbulence

In this work, we detail the GPU-porting of an in-house pseudo-spectral solver tailored towards large-scale simulations of interface-resolved simulation of drop- and bubble-laden turbulent flows. The code relies on direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, used to describe the flow field, coupled with a phase-field method, used to describe the shape, deformation, and topological changes of the interface of the drops or bubbles. The governing equations – Navier-Stokes and Cahn-Hilliard equations – are solved using a pseudo-spectral method that relies on transforming the variables in the wavenumber space. The code targets large-scale simulations of drop- and bubble-laden turbulent flows and relies on a multilevel parallelism. The first level of parallelism relies on the message-passing interface (MPI) and is used on multi-core architectures in CPU-based infrastructures. A second level of parallelism relies on OpenACC directives and cuFFT libraries and is used to accelerate the code execution when GPU-based infrastructures are targeted. The resulting multiphase flow solver can be efficiently executed in heterogeneous computing infrastructures and exhibits a remarkable speed-up when GPUs are employed. Thanks to the modular structure of the code and the use of a directive-based strategy to offload code execution on GPUs, only minor code modifications are required when targeting different computing architectures. This improves code maintenance, version control and the implementation of additional modules or governing equations.

Following introducing the Industrial Revolution 4.0 framework in 2013, many industrialised nations have implemented this new industrial paradigm. The smart factory is a fundamental concept imperative for successfully implementing the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Many scholars and specialists contend that the ongoing advancement of smart factories will transform the industrial structure. This study aims to examine the status of smart factories, exploring the development and management of the smart factory during the Industry 4.0 period under the study of system thinking. This work extensively explores the distinctive notion and presents individual anecdotes regarding the development, execution, arrangement, and administration of intelligent factories by individuals. The research employs multiple methodologies, such as system thinking of relevant literature and systematic analysis of the proposed complex project. The findings suggest that incorporating intricate system thinking, appropriate technology integration, efficient simulation and machine learning employment, and a responsive monitoring and feedback mechanism are crucial in establishing and managing intelligent manufacturing facilities. External factors and governing constraints need to be considered during the lifecycle of treating complexity. This report offers a thorough and analytical evaluation of developing the smart factory during the Fourth Industrial Revolution, serving as a scholarly resource for further exploration of related subject areas. A further investigation plans to consider deep data collection. © 2023 ACM.

The evolution of construction techniques has spanned millennia, integrating locally sourced materials with innovative technological advancements. The use of earth in construction demonstrates remarkable versatility, exhibiting plasticity when wet and robust solidity upon drying. The environmental sustainability and abundant availability of earth further reinforce its role in architectural practices. This research explores the integration of recycled thermoplastic technology with traditional earthen construction methods, focusing on non-structural walls combining thermoplastic frameworks and mixed earth techniques. The study places particular emphasis on recycled High-Density Polyethylene (r-HDPE), a material that has garnered acclaim for its role in sustainable development through the reuse of secondary raw materials and its high moldability. The primary function of r-HDPE in this context is as a supplemental framework supporting earthen materials. Utilizing recycling and production methods from Precious Plastic, the research emphasizes the prototyping of r-HDPE structures with diverse configurations, digitally designed to create components ranging from beams to intricate truss networks. The earthen mortar comprises fine and coarse sand, wheat straw, and lime, adhering to traditional mixed earth construction practices. While the materials share structural limitations with conventional mixed earth methods, the potential addition of composites to thermoplastics could improve strength but hinder mechanical recyclability, favoring chemical recycling as an alternative. This study prioritizes recyclability with minimal environmental impact, limiting its scope to mechanical recycling without composite additives. The objective of this study is to achieve a balance between innovative applications of recycled thermoplastics and long-term environmental stewardship, thereby enhancing the synergy between sustainability and construction practices. © The Author(s) 2025.

Asymmetric sway panel design for noise reduction by modal radiation efficiency tunning approach

Built-up panels are widely employed for noise reduction, with their effectiveness primarily dependent on transverse vibrations, as corroborated by numerous studies. Transverse vibrations occur perpendicular to the panel's surface and are known for their substantial sound radiation. This study introduces a novel technique for tuning modal radiation efficiency, designed to diminish sound radiation from a sway panel comprised of two vertical and one horizontal segment. Notably, when the primary vibration direction of a panel is parallel to its surface (i.e., sway vibration), both the level of transverse vibrations and the corresponding sound radiation efficiency are significantly reduced. A theoretical model was developed to investigate the interplay between transverse and longitudinal vibrations across adjacent components, shedding light on the sound radiation reduction mechanism. The sway structure exhibited a 43.5 % reduction in maximum transverse displacement compared to a simply supported beam, while the maximum longitudinal displacement was adjusted to align with the transverse displacement levels. Moreover, sway modes, in comparison to simply supported beams, demonstrate reduced radiation efficiency due to their dipole-like sound radiation patterns. Consequently, the maximum sound pressure level of the sway structure was lowered by 7 dB compared to that of the simply supported beam. This model also enables the creation of two sway modes with closely spaced frequencies through precise modifications of lengths and thicknesses, highlighting the significance of asymmetric geometry. Furthermore, comparisons of the proposed model with finite element methods and experimental results confirm a strong concordance, validating the effectiveness of the sway structure in achieving reduced sound radiation. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
