Oil flow visualisations, infrared thermography and pressure measurements are used to investigate the flow topology around a DU89-134/14 airfoil at chord-based Reynolds numbers Rec = 2.5 × 105 and Rec = 5 × 105 for angles of attack α = 1◦ and α = 5◦. The general flow topology was investigated via the oil flow visualisations, while mean separation, transition and reattachment locations were determined by infrared thermography and pressure measurements. The experimental measurements are corroborated with 3D Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations using the transitional (γ− Reθ ) SST turbulence model. Two flow regimes over the suction side of the DU89-134/14 airfoil are detected. One occurs for Rec = 2.5 × 105 and α = 1◦, where the laminar flow separates, transitions to turbulence, and does not reattach. In contrast, flow reattachment is detected with the consequent formation of a laminar separation bubble for the other observed cases. There is excellent agreement between oil flow visualizations and infrared thermography measurements in predicting separation and reattachment locations. Pressure measurements show good agreement with infrared thermography in predicting separation, transition, and reattachment locations, although erroneous interpretations are possible if there is a lack of a clear pressure plateau characteristic of flow separation. 3D RANS numerical simulations show very good performance for Rec = 5 × 105, whilst for Rec = 2.5 × 105 the performance is acceptable before the onset of transition, after which they are not capable of predicting flow features accurately. © 2024, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. VersaSens: An Extendable Multimodal Platform for Next-Generation Edge-AI Wearables

The transition of healthcare towards digitalization is closely related to the advancement of health-related technologies, including wearable sensors and edge computing. In this paper, we present VersaSens, a versatile and customizable platform concept and its real implementation as a tool to boost research in wearable sensors. The platform embodies the core attributes of the VersaSens concept: versatility, flexibility, and extendability across multiple aspects of hardware, software, and processing components. It features a modular design, consisting of sensor, processor, and co-processor modules, allowing for various configurations. To evaluate the efficiency of the platform, we tested three use cases: cough monitoring, heartbeat classification and epileptic seizure detection. In all cases, the results indicate that the platform effectively executes the applications, achieving low energy consumption. In particular, our findings indicates that the integration of a domain-specific edge-AI co-processor [i.e., HEEP ocrates (Machetti et al., 2024)] equipped with several hardware accelerators further improved the overall execution time and energy consumption of the system. These results demonstrate the potential of VersaSens to effectively support a diverse range of edge-AI applications and configurations, thereby providing a robust foundation for the research and development of novel smart wearable sensor systems.

The global problem of petroleum contamination in soils seriously threatens environmental safety and human *** studies have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of bioelectrokinetic and bioelectrochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils due to their easy implementation,environmental benignity,and enhanced removal efficiency compared to *** paper reviewed recent progress and development associated with bioelectrokinetic and bioelectrochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated *** working principles,removal efficiencies,affecting factors,and constraints of the two technologies were thoroughly summarized and *** potentials,challenges,and future perspectives were also deliberated to shed light on how to overcome the barriers and realize widespread implementation on large scales of these two technologies.

Assessment of bridge Post-Tensioning systems using non-destructive (ND) inspection methods

Reinforced concrete bridges with post-tensioned cables are particularly critical structures, as the degradation of the tendons is not fully detectable through conventional investigation methods and/or through visual inspections, due to the intrinsic nature of the structural typology. After shortly reviewing the main applications of current non-destructive (ND) methods available for investigating the deterioration of tendons and grout, the paper presents a simple procedure to rank these methods through a series of metrics formulated to evaluate the various technologies under four different aspects: accuracy of measurement, ease of use, cost, impact on the operation of the bridge. The procedure has the aim of providing bridge owners with a decision tool which can assist in the selection of the optimal ND technology available to detect a particular strand or grout defect. © 2023 Ernst & Sohn GmbH.

In this paper, advanced numerical models are used to study the progressive damage of a historic building, namely the Palazzo of Podestà and the Civic Tower of Accumoli (central Italy). The dynamic behaviour of the structure is analyzed following important seismic events such as those that occurred in 2016-2017. Discontinuous and continuous approaches are used. In the formers, the masonry response is represented both with Discrete Element Method (DEM) and the Non-Smooth Contact Dynamic (NSCD) method;in the latter the masonry nonlinearity is replicated using the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) model. The numerical results showed a good correspondence of all the approaches with the real damage suffered by the structure after the seismic sequence. © 2023 COMPDYN Proceedings. All rights reserved

Fire safety regulations in Brazil: Analysis of the occupancy classification of buildings

Fire safety in a building depends on several factors, including its use and occupancy, which fire protection systems are present in the building and the state of maintenance of these systems. Considering the fact that Brazil has 27 federal states and each of them has its own fire safety legislation, it is common for there to be divergences that result in different protection requirements depending on the state where the building is located. This study analyzes Brazilian state fire safety legislation with regard to the sizing of fire protection systems for buildings, considering the parameters used for such sizing. It then identifies the differences in classification in terms of the use and occupation of buildings in the 27 federal states; and presents a proposal for a standardized classification for the whole country, taking into account the convergences that already exist in state legislation. The main objective is to suggest a discussion starter for the process of standardizing fire safety parameters in Brazil.

Tie rods are often used in historical masonry constructions to improve structural stability. Tensile force in tie rods can be estimated from experimental measurements through dynamic methods. Generally, these methods are based on the measurement of the vibration of the tie rod through contact sensors. Here, we study the in-situ application of an innovative remote sensing technique, the ground-based radar interferometry, to the estimation of tensile force in tie rods through dynamic methods. Our purpose is to highlight the main potentials and limitations related to this application. We found that one of the most critical issues that may arise concerns the presence of static clutters. Indeed, static clutters may generate spurious frequencies that could lead to errors in the estimation of tensile force. Results show that this issue could be overcome by applying robust and effective clutter removal techniques.

Fundamental Study on Alkali-Activated Slag System with Sodium Carbonate or Calcium Hydroxide

Cement as a building material, has high fluidity, compressive strength, and durability, but carbon dioxide emissions during cement production are a major problem. As one of the countermeasures, alkali-activated cement using blast furnace slag powder with alkaline stimulants is considered to be a very promising solution for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, but there is a lack of information about the fundamental properties of alkali-activated materials. This study presents an experimental investigation of the fundamental properties of an alkali-activated slag system with sodium carbonate (NC) and calcium hydroxide (CH). The effects of calcium sulfo-aluminate (CSA) and shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) on the properties of blast furnace slag (BFS) based alkali-activated mixture were also investigated. In the experiments, fundamental characteristics including compressive strength, drying shrinkage, and water penetration tests of mortar were evaluated. Porosity, pH, and ignition loss were measured to verify the effectiveness of the materials. The experimental investigation revealed that the compressive strength was increased with the increasing replacement rates of NC in the BFS mortar, and in the case of water to BFS ratio of 0.45 with sodium carbonation addition contents 10 wt.%, the compressive strength for 28 days of curing reaches more than 50 MPa. Low water to BFS ratio and higher addition ratio of NC had a positive effect on the compressive strength development of mortar. Incorporating NC into BFS would affect the decrease in porosity and increase in ignition loss, leading to higher compressive strength. There was a negligible change to the compressive strength, porosity, pH, and ignition loss of BFS samples made with CH, thus, the addition rates of CH to BFS have no or little significant effect on the fundamental properties of alkali-activated cement. The simulation work presented in this work deals with the generation of acoustic effects with various available software tools. Generally, Audacity software is used for generation of different sound events such as simple tone, chirp, pink noise, white noise, etc. This software can be further utilized for performing acoustic related experiments on human. In this work, software-based test rig is created for performing listening test for analysis of the sound perception by various subjects. This listening test aims to rate the quality of a set of signals produced by source separation systems. This work helped in analysing that how perception of sound is affected. Software based test rig is created for performing listening test for analysis of the sound perception by various subjects. The purpose of this listening evaluation is to assess the level of a collection of signals generated by source separation systems. Source separation seeks to isolate a target source’s signal from a mashup of many sound sources.
