It is common to use sound insulation as a last resort for noise control in an urban city. Sound insulation of air-conditioned building is of importance. The stiffeners have important effects on the sound insulation properties of a stiffened structure. The experimental studies on the stiffened structures are vital for the study of the stiffener effects. Based on this concern, a simple stiffened plate system is designed which can be conveniently used in the experimental studies to investigate the effects of the stiffeners, such as the effects of the stiffener number, different stiffener locations and different stiffener materials. Experiments are carried out on this system. The results show that the properties of the stiffener, such as the stiffener positions, indeed have significant effects on the structural responses. The effectiveness of the designed stiffened system is also demonstrated.

The almost hermetic coverage of the CMS detector is used to measure the distribution of transverse energy, ET, over 13.2 units of pseudorapidity, η, for pPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN=5.02TeV. The huge angular acceptance exploits the fact that the CASTOR calorimeter at −6.6<η<−5.2 is effectively present on both sides of the colliding system because of a switch in the proton-going and lead-going beam directions. This wide acceptance enables the study of correlations between well-separated angular regions and makes the measurement a particularly powerful test of event generators. For minimum bias pPb collisions the maximum value of dET/dη is 22GeV, which implies an ET per participant nucleon pair comparable to that of peripheral PbPb collisions at sNN=2.76TeV. The increase of dET/dη with centrality is much stronger for the lead-going side than for the proton-going side. The η dependence of dET/dη is sensitive to the η range in which the centrality variable is defined. Several modern generators are compared to these results but none is able to capture all aspects of the η and centrality dependence of the data and the correlations observed between different η regions.

The distance learning system has an important role to play in development and expansion of education. Use of digital technology in education makes communication, interaction, storage, and distribution of educational content more efficient (AZAMBUJA, 2013). Today, technology and media are very diverse. Internet Protocol Television, IPTV, is a new vehicle for communication and interactive information that makes new distance learning ideas possible. IPTV has become fundamental because they are highly interactive, they deliver synchronous and asynchronous content at a high quality, and offer an expanding range of options to users. Cultural probe can lead to very promissing results as a qualitative IPTV research tool. It is a proposal of a conceptual model of a learning interface for IPTV. The objective of this article is to describe the development and application process and qualitative research results as a way to collect data using cultural probes to develop a proposal for an IPTV education interface to deliver synchrous and asynchronous content to teach engineering, specifically engineering distance learning via IPTV. Objective and tasks were designed in this study for engineering and communication students and electrical and telecommunication engineering teachers to record observations. The results obtained using this technique can help to develop a proposal for an educational interface that will enable IPTV to be used in distance education to teach engineering. The development and application process of the cultural probes in this article had three steps adapted from the method proposed by Mattelmäki [1]: 1) tuning; 2) probe design; 3) interpretation and results. Finally, the main points of the experience were cast and discussed considering the results obtained and the protocol used to collect the data. Nanofluid forced convection cooling and heating in channels and tubes were investigated analytically using a modified version of the Buongiorno equations, which fully accounts for the effects of nanoparticle volume fraction distributions on the continuity, momentum and energy equations. Analytic solutions for the cases of alumina-water nanofluids were obtained for thermally fully developed flows in both channels and tubes under constant heat flux. It has been found that both Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis are equally important for controlling nanoparticles transport phenomena. Thermophoresis drives nanoparticles from hot to cold region while Brownian diffusion makes nanoparticles distribute evenly. On the walls, they balance each other to meet the impermeable boundary condition there. As a result, a low volume fraction layer is formed on the heated wall, leading to decrease in both effective viscosity and thermal conductivity. On the cooled wall, on the contrary, comparatively high volume fraction layer is built, increasing both effective viscosity and thermal conductivity. Thus, the velocity and temperature profiles for the case of heating differ substantially from those for the case of cooling. This non-similar heat transfer characteristics associated with nanofluid forced convection cooling and heating has been captured for the first time. Furthermore, a theoretical answer to the controversial issue on the anomalous heat transfer in nanofluids has been provided in this study. Both heated tube and cooled channel solutions do suggest the anomalous heat transfer, in which the heat transfer coefficient exceeds the level expected from the increase in the effective thermal conductivity of nanofluids.

Smart Management of Electric Vehicles Charging Operations: the Vehicle-to-Charging Station Assignment Problem

The widespread diffusion of Electric Vehicles (EVs) gives a concrete answer to the growing environmental problems linked to the mobility in urban areas. This paper deals with a particular management problem related to the EVs charging operations: the integration of the EVs with the power distribution system. Possible electrical grid disruptions due to uncoordinated charging operations and the need of guaranteeing to drivers a certain level of confidence while travelling with an EV explain the efforts in the identification of a smart approach for the EVs charging management problem. In this work, a hierarchical mathematical programming approach is considered and a system made up of two interdependent optimization models is introduced in order to identify the optimum spatial and temporal scheduling of EVs charging operations in an urban area served by several charging stations. Moreover, a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for the Vehicle-to-Charging Station Assignment Problem is proposed and a preliminary example of application is presented.

In this lecture, the recent developments of the authors in the field of dynamical integrity applied to Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems（MEMS） are reviewed. The dynamical integrity was proposed by Thompson in the ’90 and further developed by Lenci and Rega in the last decade. It is aimed at paralleling the classical concept of Lyapunov stability with a modern point of view in which the robustness of the attractor is discussed based on the dimension and of the topology of its basin of attraction. It is motived by the observation that when the basin of attraction is too small, or too fractal, small dynamical perturbations, always present in real life, will cause the disappearance of the attractor, with the dynamics that may jump on another（dominating） attractor, or suddenly leading to collapse. The nonlinear dynamics of MEMS is a very prolific research area where the dynamical integrity concepts can be applied with success. In fact, it has been repeatedly observed that the theoretical range of existence of resonant and non-resonant attractors is significantly different from that observed in experiments. This discrepancy is too large to be attributed to the experimental uncertainties only, and in fact, it can be well explained by using the dynamical integrity. Experimental results will be illustrated and compared with the results of various models. Care is put in modelling the MEMS, in order to not attribute the discrepancies to the lack of accurateness in the model;attention is also paid in obtaining the reduced order models necessary to perform systematic numerical simulations. A detailed investigation of the basins of attraction is then performed to build the integrity profiles, which are the basic tools to do dynamical integrity analyses. The proposed results show not only that the dynamical integrity can be used to explain apparently unexpected experimental results, but also that it can be applied for a safe and conscious design of these devices.

The research aims at developing a Decision Support System (DSS) devoted to manage Postal Delivery Systems (PDSs). In particular, the complex structure of the PDS is analyzed by the Unified Modeling Language diagrams and the main decisions necessary to manage the system are enlightened. Moreover, we focus on the operations of the Postal Automation Centers that are the core of the PDS and have charge the distribution of the outgoing mail to the borough Postal Delivery Centers. Among the decision problems of the Postal Automation Center we focus on the vehicle routing problem. An integer programming formulation is proposed and a real case study of the Italian postal network is solved by a heuristic algorithm.

A criterion for pedestrian wind environment based on probability of exceedance of daily maximum gust wind speed is commonly used in Japan. We usually use gust factors to estimate the daily maximum gust wind speeds, using daily maximum mean wind speeds. But there still remains an unsettled problem of how to determine the appropriate gust factors. "A Working Group for Urban Wind Environment Assessment" in the Japan Association for Wind engineering has been studying this problem to establish rational wind environment assessment method. The WG proposes a model equation of the gust factors based on field observation data at 152 sites, and confirms the applicability of it to the assessment of pedestrian wind environment.

From the comfort and energy saving perspectives, the capture of hood exhaust is a crucial index to determine the required ventilation rate for a commercial kitchen. This study sought to develop a measurement method of the hood exhaust capture efficiency and to assess the effects of air conditioning disturbance and human disturbance on capture efficiency. This study found that accurate measurement of the capture efficiency was possible in a kitchen laboratory equipped with an exhaust system in the ceiling as a result of proper exhaust flow rate of additional ceiling ventilation. This measurement technique was used to study the effects of disturbances. Results indicated that capture efficiency decreased as a result of human disturbance. Thus, the ventilation rate for a commercial kitchen should be stipulated by taking into account the decrease in capture efficiency due to human disturbance.
