This paper presents the results of a simulation using physical objects. This concept integrates the physical dimensions of an entity such as length, width, and weight, with the usual process flow paradigm, recurrent in the discrete event simulation models. Based on a naval logistics system, we applied this technique in an access channel of the largest port of Latin America. This system is composed by vessel movement constrained by the access channel dimensions. Vessel length and width dictates whether it is safe or not to have one or two ships simultaneously. The success delivered by the methodology proposed was an accurate validation of the model, approximately 0.45% of deviation, when compared to real data. Additionally, the model supported the design of new terminals operations for Santos, delivering KPIs such as: canal utilization, queue time, berth utilization, and throughput capability. © 2013 IEEE.

Product lifecycle management (PLM) is a systematic, controlled concept for managing and developing products and product related information. The aim of the paper is contributing in the definition of a software tool suitable to tackle this important issue. In order to specify a simulation module that is the core of an integrated PLM platform, we analyze and describe by the Unified Modeling Language (UML) the processes that are relevant for the generic PLM concepts. Moreover, the UML activities diagrams are translated in a discrete event simulation model in order to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the PLM system and to detect possible blockings or bottlenecks. Finally, a simulation study illustrates the efficiency of the module and shows how it can help in the PLM application.

RC beams shear-strengthened with externally bonded or near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP reinforcement usually fail by the debonding of FRP in a brittle manner. When the FRP reinforcement debonds, the internal steel stirrups may have not reached their yield strength, so the contribution of the latter to the shear resistance of the beam is compromised to some extent. This phenomenon is referred to as the adverse shear interaction between the steel stirrups and the bonded FRP shear reinforcement. This paper examines such shear interaction in RC beams shear strengthened with NSM FRP strips using a simple computational model. Numerical results obtained from this model show that in such beams, most of the steel stirrups reach their yield strength, so the interaction does not have a significant adverse effect on the shear resistance of the beam. This may be seen as yet another advantage of the NSM FRP strengthening method. © 2013 International Institute for FRP in Construction.

In this paper a general sensitivity-based gradient methodology developed to investigate the relation between seismic performance reduction and regularity of brace overstrength distributions is used for performance-based design and assessment of braced steel frames. A range of variation of the brace over-strength is defined and the brace over-strength patterns that are the most unfavorable for each response parameter are identified. Then, the relationship between the brace over-strength used in the seismic design and the maximum seismic performance reduction is obtained. Results for a case study considering a realistic buckling-restrained braced frame are presented and discussed showing the practical use of the developed sensitivity-based gradient methodology.

This paper focuses on the modeling and analysis of complex production systems such as Steelmaking Continuous Casting (SM-CC) plants. To this aim, the discrete event simulation is employed to verify the dynamics and the performance of the SM-CC systems. First, the manufacturing system activities are described in detail by the Unified Modeling Language (UML). Then, the UML activity diagrams are translated in a discrete event simulation model. Hence, a real system involving a SM-CC plant located in Italy is considered and analyzed. Some simulation results show that the proposed modeling and analysis approach can be effectively used to improve and assess the performance of the system.

This paper deals with the scheduling of operations in a Steelmaking and Continuous Casting (SM-CC) plant. In particular, we consider a real case study of an integrated plant located in the North of Italy. First, we describe in details the SM-CC process of the considered system by using the Unified Modeling Language. Second, we focus on the schedule of casts on the continuous casting machine that is subject to different types of setup operations. With the objective of minimizing the maximum completion time, the schedule of the continuous casting machine is modeled by a Mixed Integer Linear Programming formulation. An example enlightens how a proper scheduling of the casts is of basic importance to obtain good system performances.

Walkability provides a foundation for a sustainable city. The effectiveness of walkability is linked with socio- economic, environmental and psychological issues. Walkability provides safety, security and comfort for the city dwellers while traveling as well as cleanliness and transparence in mobility by reducing street congestion, street pollutions, vehicle fuel cost and road fatalities. Present motorization and urbanization in Indian cities, resulting in reduced mobility and increasing hazards, has thrown a challenge to the planners and decision makers in favor of conversion of motorized cities to walkable cities. In this paper, the prospects for walkability and related issues has been analyzed and discussed for Siliguri city. Siliguri, a medium sized city of West Bengal, India has emerged as a major urban center and acts as Gateway to the entire north-eastern states of India. Planners fear that the population of Siliguri may reach up to 2 million by 2025. As Siliguri is not a planned city, it has been experiencing problems in meeting present demand with its social and physical infrastructure. The streets of Siliguri is almost choked by mixed traffic, usually paratransits and personalized two/four wheelers, slow moving vans, dense urban corridors and existence of busy commercial set ups along major roads. The rapid motorization and increasing level of economic status of the city dwellers has put immense pressure on transportation system of the town resulting in high level of congestion and fatalities. Thus, keeping many aspects as constraints, there is an urgent need to identify the prospects of walkability in the city for sustenance. In this paper, an effort has been made to identify possibilities of transforming Siliguri into a walkable city where more people will opt for walking as their first choice for short trips and to make longer distance trips using a combination of walking and public transport instead of using personal automated vehicles. In this paper we deal with the problem of modeling and simulating the Steelmaking and Continuous Casting (SM-CC) processes. The SM-CC production processes are very complex and exhibit production cycles that have to be managed with suitable sequencing and scheduling procedures in order to minimize blocking and bottleneck conditions. The paper describes in details the SM-CC process by a modular approach in a Timed Petri Net framework. In order to show that the modeling procedure is suitable to describe large systems, we model and simulate a real case study involving a SM-CC plant located in the North of Italy.

This paper deals with the Steelmaking and Casting phases of a real integrated plant. We focus on the scheduling of the casts on the machines of the process and on the cranes that perform the internal transport. The casting phase is made by Continuous Casting and Ingot Casting machines. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming model is presented for the schedule of operations, with the objective of minimizing the makespan. The model is divided into four sub-models: the steelmaking and casting processes, the cranes, the continuous casting machines and the ingot casting machines. An example is presented to show the application of the proposed model.
