This study was conducted to evaluate temperature, gas, and leachate data at two landfills in similar climatic regions (Detroit, Michigan, USA and Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan) to determine the interrelations between heat production and resulting waste temperatures and gas and leachate levels in landfills under variable decomposition conditions. Significant temperature increases occurred under long-term anaerobic conditions. Stable elevated temperatures under anaerobic conditions were observed for wastes at central locations. Seasonal fluctuations in both temperature and gas existed at shallow depths and near perimeter locations. Placement of an overfill of fresh wastes over old wastes affected temperatures, yet did not significantly influence existing anaerobic conditions. Temperatures increased at shallow depths and decreased at greater depths to reach the characteristic waste temperature profile observed in landfills located in temperate climates. Introduction of semi-aerobic conditions using passive gas vents resulted in high temperature variations. Heating and cooling were both observed, depending on vent location with a net heating effect of 1.3 to 3.0°C over 4 years. Temperatures of wastes below a leachate mound were low and varied less in comparison to wastes above the leachate mound under semi-aerobic conditions. Waste temperatures were lower above high leachate mound than low leachate mound. © 2011 ASCE.

The Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL 1984) of Malaysia is a reference about the minimum and maximum limits of occupant's comfort and has been implemented since 1984. As a practice norm, all modern houses must follow those limitations suggested. However, pilot survey shows many occupants still renovate their houses and concurrently death causes of fire are increasing. Therefore, the objective of this article is to bring out the actual facts about the enforcement culture and it is relevance against UBBL. This research only focuses on means of escaping for occupants; dead-end distance and grilles fixed to windows/doors. Through structured interview and questionnaire survey, analysis using software of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) of this research found that certain area of UBBL requirements such as room extending and materials used were overruled by non compliance persons. This output could be implemented by Local Authority to enforce the culture of house renovation for comfort living.

An air source heat pump system (ASHPS) was setup, which provided space heating and cooling, as well as hot water for an office building in Tianjin. Its operating performance in winter was evaluated based on test data including water inlet and outlet temperatures, ambient and room temperatures, relative humidity and energy combustion under different operation modes. Then a comparative discussion is given on the effect of climate conditions and heating load ratio on the operation behavior, and an analysis of heating capacity variation caused by evaporator frosting is carried out as well. Finally, the defrosting parameters and the technical feasibility are studied for a constant heating demand.

In this paper, two kinds of mega-frame structures have been simplified to the series-parallel-connection model which considered with joint rotation. The stiffness matrix and mass matrix also have been established and predigested. The vertical stiffness matrix and mass matrix have been obtained. There has been a dynamic characteristics analysis on the structures subjected to vertical seismic force with the method of analysis of step-by step integer. From the results some dynamic characters of structures subjected to vertical seismic force have been obtained. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications.

Several common used image mosaics algorithms are analyzed and compared and new algorithm based on feature points matching is presented, in which stitch points is determined through finding corresponding feature points of two images and its matching position is determined; Image mosaics are accomplished through fusing process in overlapping area and experiment is carried out in order to test the algorithm presented in the paper lastly. Experiment proves responsibility of algorithm proposed in this paper and good result is gained.

Image mosaics algorithm based on feature-block matching is proposed. Edge detection is used to pickup base feature-block automatically and thus improves the precision of image stitching. In the problem of searching matching block, a hierarchical search strategy is employed, which improves the speed of image stitching. Experiment proves responsibility of algorithm proposed in this paper and good result is gained.

Practical sessions are the backbone of qualification in engineering education. It leads to a better understanding and allows mastering scientific concepts and theories. The lack of the availability of practical sessions at many universities and institutions owing to the cost and the unavailability of instructors the most of the time caused a significant decline in experimentation in engineering education over the last decades. Recently, with the progress of computer-based learning, remote laboratories have been proven to be the best alternative to the traditional ones, regarding to its low cost and ubiquity. Some universities have already started to deploy remote labs in their practical sessions. This contribution compiles diverse experiences based on the deployment of the remote laboratory, Virtual Instrument Systems in Reality (VISIR), on the practices of undergraduate engineering grades at various universities within the VISIR community. It aims to show the impact of its usage on engineering education concerning the assessments of students and teachers as well. © 2011 IEEE.

The electrode displacement signal of resistance spot welding process is monitored and mapped into a 15×25 element bipolarized matrix by means of some method of fuzzy theory. The electrode displacement pattern matrixes from different welding current are treated as gene to construct chromosome. The genetic K-means algorithm(GKA), which combines the simplicity of the K-means algorithm and the robust nature of the genetic algorithm, is utilized to realize clustering analysis and quality estimation of welded spots. The results of the clustering analysis indicate that the electrode displacement pattern matrix can provide adequate quality information of welded spots for machine learning and the method avoids complicated programming work. At the same time, compared with the conventional K-means algorithm, the GKA method has a strong ability to find the global optimal solutions and be able to quickly and effectively complete the clustering task under small sample circumstance. The results of clustering can realize quality estimation of the resistance spot welding and also can be used as a prior knowledge to provide the necessary support for the supervised machine learning to evaluate the weld quality.

According to the analysis and the research on the residential environment concept and methods of the planning and design of the modern residential environment, it discusses residential environment planning and design scheme in the reconstruction after earthquake disasters. The article also points out that it should make the residential environment planning and design from such aspects as the reconstruction sites, the planning system, local culture, building and environment design, psychological reconstruction, and thus establishes good social and cultural environment so as to improve people's quality of their lives. At the same time, it briefly reviews the organization approach and overall ideas of the Wenchuan earthquake reconstruction planning. And some basic methods and strategies of the recovery are discussed in the article.
