This study proposes a novel methodology for quantifying losses in wireless power transfer systems (WPTs). By employing a circuit model derived from just three finite element simulations (FEM), it enables the separation of loss contributions from the magnetic and mechanical components across all operating conditions. This streamlined approach proves highly effective, providing a thorough analysis with minimal computational effort, thereby facilitating the optimization of the part that represents the bottleneck for this type of application. A mobile phone test case was used because the charging power is limited by the rise in temperature on the receiver. Identifying the elements responsible for significant dissipation within the receiver system via conventional measurements proves practically infeasible due to the low power levels involved. Consequently, a finite element simulation is necessary for each operating condition. After presenting and demonstrating the methodology, the study illustrates the figure of merit (FOM), which provides insight into the quality of the receiver coil, identified as the most critical element of the charging system. A case study will offer a practical example of the methodology, verified with experimental measurements. © 2013 IEEE.

The novel concept of signature graphs extends signed graphs by admitting multiple types of partial similarity/agreement or dissimilarity/disagreement. Extending the concept of balancedness to signature graphs yields an explicit and efficient basis for multi-class clustering and classification. Contrary to existing two-stage approaches that consist of graph learning followed by graph clustering, we propose a one-step procedure that directly learns a perfectly clustered graph. We describe the algorithmic constituents for our approach and illustrate its superiority via numerical simulations.

Accidents at work represent, globally, a significant social and business cost for all production processes and working sectors. With a view to achieve the Sustainability Goals shared in the 2030 Agenda, it is necessary to design tools that can analyze and monitor the costs related to the accidents phenomenon, to support the Public Administration in defining effective strategies for the implementation of health and safety in the workplace and to reduce the costs related to the phenomenon of injuries. On the basis of an analysis of the literature referring to existing models used to calculate the costs of the accident phenomenon, this research proposes a methodological approach to calculate the costs incurred, both in case and in the absence of injury by the main stakeholders (worker, enterprise, state, society) with reference to four different scenarios. The methodological approach can be used to different product sectors and different geographical contexts and could be used to compare the effectiveness of different political strategies. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In recent years, the construction of branched tunnels has increased in cities to facilitate the interconnection of urban transportation systems. However, these bifurcated sections create a complex traffic flow state, thus posing a higher fire risk. Moreover, the rapidly changing boundaries at the tunnel traffic merging section will cause a complex fire and smoke transportation behavior once a fire occurs. Previous studies have observed the lateral deflection of flames towards the sidewall under natural ventilation conditions, whereas the effect of ventilation conditions and associated temperature distribution characteristics are still unknown. In this study, the effect of inflow conditions and heat release rate (HRR) on flame behavior and temperature distribution in the tunnel traffic merging section was studied with a set of reduce-scale model experiments. Results indicate that the temperature distribution at the traffic merging section shows a strong multidimensional feature due to the coupling effect of rapidly changing boundaries and the fire buoyant-induced flow. As a result of multidimensional flame deflection, the location of the maximum temperature on the ceiling deviates from the center axis. Finally, a prediction equation to evaluate the maximum ceiling temperature is proposed by introducing confluence velocity to modify the classical plume theory. This work contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the fire dynamic theory in bifurcated tunnels and can inform the development of effective fire safety measures. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The paper deals with a novel scheduling strategy for the assignation of a power resource. More precisely, a set of tasks, characterized by power requests with variable power rate, such as in the domestic electric appliances, is considered and the strategy aims at minimizing the average waiting time. The main result is that to determine the assignation strategy only the information on the maximum needed power and on the duration of the tasks is required. During the implementation of the strategy, the scheduler needs to periodically obtain, from the appliances, information on the maximum power needed to complete the task. In the case of two tasks, the strategy is shown, both analytically and with simulations, to perform better than a non-interruptible strategy.

The old city of Mosul possesses a rich built heritage, featuring distinct architectural styles evolved, incorporating indigenous knowledge and expertise to address functional, climatic, economic, and construction requirements. Tragically, during the military operations in 2016-2017, Mosul Old City experienced extensive devastation, resulting in the loss of numerous landmarks and the irreplaceable built heritage of this city. However, digitization has emerged as a potent heritage preservation and restoration tool. It serves as a vital initial step in reviving deteriorated heritage by providing invaluable information to specialists. In light of this, the present study aims to regenerate the urban facades of Mosul's old city automatically, ensuring they retain their original characteristics. This objective will be accomplished by utilizing procedural modelling techniques and algorithms incorporating specific characteristics as constraints within the regeneration process. The research makes a notable contribution to digital architectural design by employing Shape Grammar analysis to derive rules. Subsequently, these rules are implemented through Python to facilitate the automatic generation of 750 heritage facade designs. Ultimately, the study demonstrates the feasibility of using procedural modelling to recreate the decimated urban fabric, ensuring the restored structures exhibit the same formal and structural characteristics as their predecessors. © 2024, The Authors. The modern strategic development of any territory is being actively discussed today within a reasonable combination of market instruments to increase the attractiveness of the territory and improve the quality of life. To assess the effectiveness of territorial marketing activities, the integrated indicator or the system of the indicators is needed, which could be used to monitor how the needs for the formation of long-term competitive advantages of legal entities and improving the life quality are met. It should be noted that the development of approaches to the assessing the socio-economic development of the territory has become a necessary major trend in their attractiveness. The aim of the work is to develop scientific and methodological tools for calculating the integrated indicator for assessing the socio-economic development of the territory on the basis of a marketing approach. In the article was formed the author’s methodology of estimation of socio-economic policy of territories. A set of indicators characterising the quality of territorial population life has been formed;the assessment methodology of development priority of territorial clusters is offered;the integrated indicator of the efficiency of the territorial marketing system has been developed. Specified that the review of the territorial complex is based on the indicators of the quality of life of the population, the map of the quality of life is developed, which takes into account the key subjective and objective components. The direction of further research is based on development of territorial marketing activities tools, for solution of socio-economic imbalances of territories. The practical value of the article lies in the possibility of using theoretical and methodological developments for assessing the socio-economic development of the territory based on the marketing approach of state authorities in developing policy documents in socio-economic development of regions and settlements. © 20

Prevailing methods of transport planning focus on the functioning of transport systems rather than on the services people receive from those systems. In line with this perspective, and as epitomized by the four-step model, road congestion has been seen as the main transport problem, and investments to ease congestion are given priority. This approach, still very dominant in the Global North, has de facto caused the gradual emergence of transport-related social exclusion, as it has ignored the mobility and accessibility difficulties by people with limited or no access to private motorised transport. Against this background, the research explores whether and how people-centred transport planning can be relevant to Sub-Saharan Africa, where a vast majority of the population currently has no or limited access to (private) motorised transport modes. This work proposes a new transport planning approach called transport justice. Transport justice focuses on providing transport interventions to sections of a community that are most deprived of the service. The work discusses a real case study of the cities of Blantyre, Malawi, and Kigali, Rwanda. The results show that households with access to private cars in Blantyre are almost ten times better of than households without cars in terms of potential opportunities within their reach. In Kigali, households with access to a car are almost thirteen times better of than households with no car in terms of potential opportunities within reach This approach to transport planning is significant as it encourages the quantification of the transport needs of people groups and the prioritisation of areas with the greatest needs in the implementation of transport interventions.

Influence of local site effects on the typological fragility curves for class-oriented masonry buildings in aggregate condition

Background: The Municipality of Baranello, located in the province of Campobasso, is considered as a reference case study for implementing a systematic procedure for the assessment of local site effects. The territory is characterised by a heterogeneous soil, made of a basal interval formed in large part by outcrops found along with the middle-basal bands of the local slopes, which is particularly sensitive to geo-hazard effects. Aims: The present work aims to investigate the influence of local site effects on the seismic vulnerability of an oriented-class of masonry building compounds. The historical buildings surveyed are mainly made up of rough stone masonry, particularly vulnerable to seismic phenomena. The buildings are appropriately grouped in typological classes based on the CARTIS form and then subdivided into different categories according to the EMS-98 scale based on their geometrical and structural characteristics. Methods: The performed vulnerability analysis is based on a vulnerability-index method conceived for buildings grouped in aggregate condition. Moreover, the expected damage scenario is properly evaluated based on a specific attenuation law to take into consideration the effect produced by a reference scenario event. Furthermore, the local site conditions have been evaluated based on a 1D half space approach in order to predict the possible increment of the expected damage due to the soil stratigraphy. Results: The local site conditions provide a global increment of the expected vulnerability of 33% with respect to the case in which the geo-hazard effects are neglected. In this activity framework, typological fragility curves are derived for comparing the exceeding probability thresholds for the examined building classes. Conclusion: The proposed research represents an important starting point for large-scale vulnerability assessment since it provides a simplified and comprehensive method for predicting seismic damage scenarios of historic cente
