The vector form intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) method is a numerical analysis method based on the theory of vector mechanics. With the underlying concepts of point value description, path element and fictitious reverse motion, the numerical model is established for the mechanical behavior of the structure. In comparison with the traditional finite element (FE) methods, there is no assembling for the global stiffness matrices in VFIFE method. VFIFE method can effectively handle the complicated behavior analysis involving large deformation, large displacement, geometric and material non-linearity, contact and collision, fracture and collapse, buckling or wrinkling failure, etc. The differences in basic theory between traditional FE methods and VFIFE method are summarized before demonstrating the recent progress, development and applications in various fields and structures. Existing researches proved the strong capability and high accuracy of VFIFE method. Moreover, the application trends of VFIFE method are discussed, including dynamic behavior of large scale structures, cloud-based high-speed parallel computing, hybrid simulation, and digital twin technology. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this work, we detail the GPU-porting of an in-house pseudo-spectral solver tailored towards large-scale simulations of interface-resolved simulation of drop- and bubble-laden turbulent flows. The code relies on direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, used to describe the flow field, coupled with a phase-field method, used to describe the shape, deformation, and topological changes of the interface of the drops or bubbles. The governing equations - Navier-Stokes and Cahn-Hilliard equations - are solved using a pseudo-spectral method that relies on transforming the variables in the wavenumber space. The code targets large-scale simulations of drop- and bubble-laden turbulent flows and relies on a multilevel parallelism. The first level of parallelism relies on the message-passing interface (MPI) and is used on multi-core architectures in CPU-based infrastructures. A second level of parallelism relies on OpenACC directives and cuFFT libraries and is used to accelerate the code execution when GPU-based infrastructures are targeted. The resulting multiphase flow solver can be efficiently executed in heterogeneous computing infrastructures and exhibits a remarkable speed-up when GPUs are employed. Thanks to the modular structure of the code and the use of a directive-based strategy to offload code execution on GPUs, only minor code modifications are required when targeting different computing architectures. This improves code maintenance, version control and the implementation of additional modules or governing equations. © 2024 The Author(s).

Public housing estates in major European cities, mostly built in the second half of the 20th century, today face challenges related to housing, urban decay, socio-economic depression, and marginalization. However, these neighborhoods, which have similar characteristics in all European suburbs, represent a valuable resource in the context of sustainable development principles that promote reuse. This work aims to define a methodological approach aimed at identifying intervention strategies, protocols, and sustainability indices that can be replicated in regeneration interventions in these neighborhoods. This approach involves a comprehensive analysis of existing housing, residents’ needs, and innovative regeneration strategies, developing a methodology for evaluating urban regeneration interventions. The proposed approach includes the definition of a model for sustainability assessment, experimental implementation, and validation in real case studies. The research aims to contribute to the identification of replicable and adaptable strategies for social, economic, and environmentally sustainable urban regeneration, highlighting stakeholder involvement. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

As revealed by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, educational buildings significantly suffer from poor indoor environmental quality - mainly indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort - that affects students' wellbeing. Although it is well-known that children are sensitive to IAQ due to their still-developing respiratory system, literature lacks studies of indoor quality in pre-schools. In this work, a monitoring campaign has been conducted in two classrooms of a naturally ventilated preschool located in the Mediterranean area. The monitoring was performed over a two-weeks period in summer conditions (between May and June), tracking temperatures and relative humidity values. Thanks to the observed parameters, the ventilation strategies adopted by the users have been evaluated, assessing their influence on indoor comfort parameters. In addition, the variation of carbon dioxide levels has been calculated over the monitoring period. The study revealed indoor poor conditions within the building, showing the vulnerability of naturally ventilated schools, whose comfort is closely related to the occupants’ behavior. © 2024 18th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - Conference Program and Proceedings. The pressing need to successfully integrate non-financial assets (social, environmental) into consolidated economic-financial analysis operations motivates the scientific community in general to seek operational strategies to help with this effort. The broad field of sustainable finance is characterized by increasingly difficult-to-account for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, which are then taken into account in decision-making systems to assess the investment's impact. Therefore, what operational tool and methodology might be used to prioritize the execution of non-financial valuation processes, particularly in corporate environmental, social, and governance? The purpose of this work is to enable rapid risk assessment practices by including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into investment impact assessment activities. For this purpose, an ESG composite indicator is provided that can be used in multi-scale performance analysis tasks that may be applied to various types of investigation elements. In terms of the random and difficult to measure characteristics, namely which indicators to use and how to measure them, the potential applications and methods of using factor analysis as a methodological framework for creating composite indicators has been researching. The definition of an ESG indicator composite approach is illustrated through a case study of an ESG performance analysis of many market sectors within the Italian manufacturing industry. The next phases of the current research as well as the potentialities of the suggested technique based on the defined ESG composite indicator remain to be appropriately explored. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Improving urban outdoor thermal comfort is a challenge due to extreme urban heat waves and the urban heat island effect. However, the implementation of localised outdoor cooling hubs, such as open bus stops, sit-out places, parks, and construction sites, can help improve outdoor thermal comfort in specific areas. The cooling hubs featured membrane-assisted radiant cooling panels that can directly treat humans by radiative heat transfer while minimising convective heat loss to the ambient. This study aims to analyse the heat transfer and cooling performance of a localised cooling hub during a typical summer day in Hong Kong, using numerical techniques. A novel coupling approach between CFD and the human thermoregulation model (JOS-3), along with the UC Berkeley comfort model, is employed to assess human thermal sensation. The findings demonstrate that the localised outdoor cooling hub effectively delivers a cooling sensation to the occupants even in the challenging hot summer conditions in Hong Kong. © 2024 18th Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - Conference Program and Proceedings. The change in the sustainability assessment paradigm based on the ESG pillars requires a fundamental methodological-operational change, promoting the search and definition of taxonomies, criteria and standardized performance indicators that support generally accepted ESG impact assessment practices. As of today (2023), there is a heterogeneity of terminology and meaning regarding the indicators, criteria and operational methods to be implemented in order to carry out ESG evaluations and analyses. The main objective of this paper is to systematize the range of ESG indicators that can be found in the academic literature of the sector. To this end, an analysis of the existing bibliography on ESG over the last 10 years (2013–2023) was carried out, as well as a content analysis of the reports of the main international rating agencies whose information on their evaluation work is publicly available. A text clustering analysis was used to identify thematic categories (criteria) for each of the ESG pillars, with the aim of contributing to the construction of a dataset of indicators and criteria as a starting point for pursuing the goal of standardizing ESG ratings. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) composites have emerged as reliable strengthening materials especially for historical masonry constructions. Their strengthening effectiveness strongly depends on the bond at the matrix-fibers interface and at the matrix-substrate interface;thus, the analysis of FRCM bond behavior is of crucial relevance. To this aim, we propose an innovative nonlinear ultrasonic approach based on the Side-band Peak Count (SPC) technique. The Side-band Peak Count technique reprocesses the results of the ultrasonic guided wave tests on FRCM reinforced specimens during Double-Lap Shear Tests (DLT), in order to correlate the nonlinear ultrasonic results to the shear stress distribution at reinforcement-masonry interface for long bond length. So, the bond behavior between FRCM composites, made of basalt textile embedded in a lime-based mortar matrix (B-FRCM) and masonry tuff supports was ultrasonically analyzed. Moreover, a new nonlinear ultrasonic parameter, the SPC index (SPC-I) is introduced. By means of the SPC index it was possible to monitor the evolution of the shear stress-slip law at the reinforcement-masonry interface. The non-linear ultrasonic results were compared with the results obtained during the DLT debonding test by means of electrical strain gauges positioned in suitable areas of the reinforced samples. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is investigated and discussed. © 2024 IEEE.
