Watermelon is one of the most challenging fruits to determine if it is ripe, unripe, or overripe. Monitoring its quality is essential for boosting its marketability and productivity. Manual methods used in identifying its maturity level depend on tapping, color inspection, and the number of days. While they are useful, their accuracy and precision are limited due to reliance on guesswork. This study aims to provide a non-destructive method for watermelon ripeness detection of Sugar Baby variety through Acoustics Analysis and Spectral Identification using Fast Fourier Transform and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). A portable and automated device is designed, consisting of processes including the detection of sound and internal content qualities using NIRS sensor and microphone, assessing the wavelength and frequencies acquired, and interpreting the findings in line with the standard values set. K-Nearest Neighbor technique is employed, where transformed signals are passed through computation, comparing, and voting. A total of 300 watermelon samples were evaluated and 30 respondents were also surveyed to assess the effectiveness of the device. Results revealed that utilizing both NIRS and Fast Fourier Transform can effectively detect watermelon ripeness with high accuracy of 90.7%. The automated watermelon ripeness detector is strongly preferred over manual detection.

This study proposes a direct teaching method for the task of pressing an end effector attached to a robot manipulator against a workpiece with a constant force. When performing contact tasks, such as deburring or polishing using a manipulator, a passive compliance is required for the end effector to suppress excessive contact force and impact. Therefore, we developed an end effector that combines a “parallel wire-type teaching device,” which enables direct teaching, and a compliance device. In the case of pressing a workpiece with a constant force, after teaching the robot's trajectory to trace the edge of the workpiece, the amount of pressing can be calculated from the stiffness of the end effector and the desired pressing force; the robot's trajectory can be edited to teach contact tasks. An experiment was conducted to press a straight trajectory with a constant force as the target value and evaluate the accuracy of force teaching.

Left Ventricular Assist Devices have been successfully used for the treatment of Congestive Heart failure in patients who are not eligible for heart transplantation. This paper describes the implementation and comparison of the performance of a pressure sensor-based feedback controller. The strategies were tested on a mock loop of the systemic circulation. The results show that the use of pressure sensors generated a more accurate response of the controller compared to the use of *** Relevance— The study describes the integration of a LVAD physiological controller to a dynamic wireless monitoring system.

Prevention of the spread of disease is the most critical effort before the domino effect occurs. One way to prevent its spread is to practice social distancing. Prevention of the spread of covid-19 can be easier by doing Contact Tracing. Contact tracing is done to find out who is infected. This paper proposes an accurate and energy-efficient tracing system based on an android application by utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signals from smartphones to automatically detect possible contacts between users. Using BLE level signals, each app estimates its distance to its opponent. However, calculating the approximate distance with a BLE level signal cannot yield a sufficiently accurate number. Therefore, the prototype of the contact tracing system implements zoning based on the signal level. The results show that the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) threshold at one meter is accurate for tracing, provided that the devices share the same chipset. Moreover, it is pretty energy-efficient to be installed on a user's Android smartphone because it only requires 14.17 mAh for 6 hours of operation or the equivalent of 2.14 mAh per hour. © 2021 IEEE.

3D point clouds enhanced the robot’s ability to perceive the geometrical information of the environments, making it possible for many downstream tasks such as grasp pose detection and scene understanding. The performance of these tasks, though, heavily relies on the quality of data input, as incomplete can lead to poor results and failure cases. Recent training loss functions designed for deep learning-based point cloud completion, such as Chamfer distance (CD) and its variants (e.g. HyperCD [1]), imply a good gradient weighting scheme can significantly boost performance. However, these CD-based loss functions usually require data-related parameter tuning, which can be time-consuming for data-extensive tasks. To address this issue, we aim to find a family of weighted training losses (weighted CD) that requires no parameter tuning. To this end, we propose a search scheme, Loss Distillation via Gradient Matching, to find good candidate loss functions by mimicking the learning behavior in backpropagation between HyperCD and weighted CD. Once this is done, we propose a novel bilevel optimization formula to train the backbone network based on the weighted CD loss. We observe that: (1) with proper weighted functions, the weighted CD can always achieve similar performance to HyperCD, and (2) the Landau weighted CD, namely Landau CD, can outperform HyperCD for point cloud completion and lead to new state-of-the-art results on several benchmark datasets. With the growing demand for renewable-energy-powered hydrogen generation and the corresponding increase in plant capacity, individually controlling many electrolyzer stacks will be critical for increasing the plant’s lifetime and efficiency. This paper introduces a rule-based controller framework targeting electrolyzer degradation to explore the opportunity space in multi-stack hydrogen plant control. A novel control-oriented degradation model is also presented in this work, which quantifies the impact of steady power input, fluctuating power input, and the number of startup/shutdown cycles on electrolyzer degradation. Using a wind power input signal, 13 controller configurations are tested on 5 MW hydrogen plants consisting of 2, 5, 10, and 25 stacks. These configurations are evaluated on their capability to mitigate electrolyzer degradation and efficiently produce hydrogen from the time-varying input power. The results show that multi-stack control for degradation can extend the plant’s lifetime by more than a factor of 3 with minimal impact on instantaneous hydrogen production.

Ketamine is an anesthetic, which when used wrongly would affect judgment and behavior, increasing risks to individual such as unwanted or risky sexual behavior. This study reports the development of an admittance- and capacitance-spectroscopy-based sensor to detect ketamine in solution, such as whiskey, a popular alcoholic drink. The result confirms the proposed method is capable of detecting the presence of ketamine in whiskey, in concentration as low as 6.25 ng/μL, by using admittance and capacitance measured at 6.75 MHz, as well as quantifying the measured admittance (sensitivity: 300 μΩ−1/Log (ng/μL);limit of detection (LOD): 0.16 ng/μL) or capacitance data (sensitivity: 2 nF/Log (ng/μL);LOD: 0.73 ng/μL) at 18 kHz and 7.69 MHz, respectively. © 2023 The Chinese Institute of Engineers.

Induction motors can be operated as induction generators when additional capacitors are added to the stator terminals. Capacitors connected to induction generators can generate voltage and can provide reactive power. The advantage of induction generators can be used in small-scale plants such as micro-hydro power plants. However, the weakness of induction generators are weak voltage regulation and dependence on capacitors to generate voltage. This study conducted a test to see how the effect of capacitor capacity on the voltage generated by a induction generator when serving multiple incandescent lamp loads. The capacitor used is connected with a wye connection because the Wye connection can generate a higher voltage than the Delta connection circuit. This research has been successfully carried out with variations in capacitor values, namely 45 F, 60 F, and 75 F and variations in lamp load values, namely 5W, 15W, 25W, 40W and 60W. Based on the results of the study, the induction generators uses a 45 F capacitor with a load of 5 W, the terminal voltage for line to line is 374 V. However, when using a 75 F capacitor with a 60W load, the terminal voltage for line to line is 239 V. The terminals voltage of the induction generators can also be kept at a constant 380 V by providing varying capacitor values even though it serves varying loads. © 2022 IEEE.

A set of miniature energy storage device through repurposing batteries and green power generation devices combined with an intelligent Internet of Things system is designed in this study. A large quantity of recycled and repurposed lithium batteries is applied as the core of the energy storage device; photovoltaic panels and minitype wind generators matching a wind-energy and solar-energy charge controller are used for charging batteries; and finally, an intelligent home Internet of Things system is utilized for monitoring and control. The experimental results reveal that the green power generation device appears longer effective charging time during the day, but could continuously generate electricity and store energy in the evening. The charging capacity is also larger than it simply using photovoltaic panels, and the intelligent home Internet of Things system could effectively monitor the power generation in a day and calculate carbon emissions. The prototype design results satisfy the expected function of an intelligent Internet of Things system combined green energy storage device.

In face milling process of train wheel, cutter is one of the most important part and this part should be monitored from failure phenomena for improving final products of train wheel during machining process. One of the best ways for face milling tool condition monitoring is by analyzing signal. However, noise usually contaminates the measured signals during measurement using any sensors. This study presents the effect of noise on the Hilbert-Huang transform features for face milling condition monitoring by mean analyzing the synthetic vibration signals. First, noisy synthetic signals were created, then separates them by Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to be intrinsic mode decompositions (IMFs). Second, the Hilbert-Huang spectra were generated and then compared to HHT baseline spectrum. The result showed that the noise disturbed the HHT spectrum. Without filtering signal, the face milling cutter condition phenomenon was difficult to be revealed by HHT. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
