This paper provides a thorough evaluation of well-known control algorithms, i.e., proportional-integral (PI), model predictive control (MPC), and H-infinity (H∞) controllers, by implementing them in a full nonlinear wind turbine model under normal wind conditions in below and above-rated wind speeds. The simulation results illustrate that all the controllers perform satisfactorily. This study extends the MPC to include a feedforward (FF) loop (FF-MPC) that uses the wind speed information provided by a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor, which measures the upcoming wind (in advance), to improve the overall control performance. The FF-MPC was tested under both normal and anomalous (i.e., gusty) wind conditions, and the results were compared with those of the standard feedback MPC (FB-MPC). The results demonstrate that the incorporation of the FF loop into the standard FB controller can improve the control performance, which can result in improved reliability and lifespan of the turbine. Furthermore, MPC is chosen to be augmented with an FF loop over PI and H∞ controllers owing to its versatility in handling constraints, nonlinearities, and multiple objectives, along with its inherent capability to incorporate preview wind data. All the controllers used in this study were implemented in C++ and subsequently compiled into a dynamic link library for compatibility using DNV’s full nonlinear Bladed software model of the Supergen 5-MW exemplar wind turbine. Using a high-fidelity aeroelastic wind turbine simulator, i.e., Bladed, various realistic wind conditions, including gusts, can be modeled and simulated to test the controllers. Thus, the process of a nacelle-based LiDAR used for measuring the wind and providing the control system can be modeled with realistic and accurate measurements, considering various phenomena, such as the wind evolution between the LiDAR and the rotor of the turbine, as well as inevitable uncertainties. © 2024, The Authors. As Metaverse emerges as the next-generation Internet paradigm, the ability to efficiently generate content is paramount. AI-Generated Content (AIGC) emerges as a key solution, yet the resource-intensive nature of large Generative AI (GAI) models presents challenges. To address this issue, we introduce an AIGC-as-a-Service (AaaS) architecture, which deploys AIGC models in wireless edge networks to ensure broad AIGC services accessibility for Metaverse users. Nonetheless, an important aspect of providing personalized user experiences requires carefully selecting AIGC Service Providers (ASPs) capable of effectively executing user tasks, which is complicated by environmental uncertainty and variability. Addressing this gap in current research, we introduce the AI-Generated Optimal Decision (AGOD) algorithm, a diffusion model-based approach for generating the optimal ASP selection decisions. Integrating AGOD with Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), we develop the Deep Diffusion Soft Actor-Critic (D2SAC) algorithm, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of ASP selection. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that D2SAC outperforms seven leading DRL algorithms. Furthermore, the proposed AGOD algorithm has the potential for extension to various optimization problems in wireless networks, positioning it as a promising approach for future research on AIGC-driven services. Universities can employ information technology as one means of achieving their goals and objectives. Universities can get advantages from information technology, such as effective resource management and information management for decision-making. However, don't forget that the campus must consider what technology is appropriate to assist them achieve their goals, particularly in the current industrial era 4.0 where technology is available with many different choices. The campus requires an enterprise architecture in order to design, manage, and coordinate information technology infrastructure, applications, and processes strategically and thoroughly. The adoption of enterprise information system architecture (EA) is also intended to improve the quality of services provided to internal and external stakeholders. In this case, Enterprise Architecture can help an organization to match its information technology resources with business processes and strategies to achieve their goals. This research was conducted using TOGAF ADM, also known as the Open Group Architecture Framework Architecture Development Method. This method offers best practices for creating enterprise architecture and emphasizes several steps that include creating an architectural vision, information systems, business architecture modeling to help XYZ campus manage all their information technology.

Topological wave phenomena in photonic time quasicrystals

Time interfaces consist of abrupt and spatially uniform changes in the optical properties of a medium. Their periodic occurrence forms photonic time crystals, which offer opportunities to tailor classical and quantum light-matter interactions. Here we explore one-dimensional photonic time quasicrystals, formed when time interfaces occur in a quasiperiodic fashion featuring long-range order. We unveil the emergence of topological phases and Hofstadter butterfly spectra in these systems, and demonstrate that their temporal response emulates the localization of topological edge states, enabling the temporal analog of topological Thouless pumping. Our findings open avenues for topological photonics leveraging time as a synthetic dimension, with functionalities that go beyond their spatial counterparts.

Future wireless communication systems will evolve toward multi-functional integrated systems to improve spectrum utilization and reduce equipment sizes. A joint radar and communication (JRC) system, which can support simultaneous information transmission and target detection, has been regarded as a promising solution for emerging applications such as autonomous vehicles. In JRC, data security and privacy protection are critical issues. Thus, we first apply covert communication into JRC and propose a joint radar and covert communication (JRCC) system to achieve high spectrum utilization and secure data transmission simultaneously. In the JRCC system, an existence of sensitive data transmission is hidden from a maliciously observant warden. However, the performance of JRCC is restricted by severe signal propagation environment and hardware devices. Fortunately, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can change the signal propagation smartly to improve the networks performance with low cost. We first overview fundamental concepts of JRCC and RIS and then propose the RIS-aided JRCC system design. Furthermore, both covert communication and radar performance metrics are investigated and a game theory-based covert rate optimization scheme is designed to achieve secure communication. The dual active bridge (DAB) converter has been popular in many applications for its outstanding power density and bidirectional power transfer capacity. Up to now, triple phase shift (TPS) can be considered as one of the most advanced modulation techniques for DAB converter. It can widen zero voltage switching range and improve power efficiency significantly. Currently, current stress of the DAB converter has been an important performance indicator when TPS modulation is applied for smaller size and higher efficiency. However, to minimize the current stress when the DAB converter is under TPS modulation, two difficulties exist in analysis process and realization process, respectively. Firstly, three degrees of modulation variables in TPS modulation bring challenges to the analysis of current stress in different operating modes. This analysis and deduction process leads to heavy computational burden and also suffers from low accuracy. Secondly, to realize TPS modulation, if a lookup table is adopted after the optimization of modulation variables, modulation performance will be unsatisfactory because of the discrete nature of lookup table. Therefore, an AI-based TPS modulation (AI-TPSM) strategy is proposed in this paper. Neural network (NN) and fuzzy inference system (FIS) are utilized to deal with the two difficulties mentioned above. With the proposed AI-TPSM, the optimization of TPS modulation for minimized current stress will enjoy high degree of automation which can relieve engineers’ working burden and improve accuracy. Parameter design is significant in ensuring a satisfactory holistic performance of power converters. Generally, circuit parameter design for power converters consists of two processes: analysis and deduction process and optimization process. The existing approaches for parameter design consist of two types: traditional approach, computer-aided optimization (CAO) approach. In the traditional approaches, heavy human-dependence is required. Even though the emerging CAO approaches automate the optimization process, they still require manual analysis and deduction process. To mitigate human-dependence for the sake of high accuracy and easy implementation, an artificial-intelligence-based design (AI-D) approach is proposed in this paper for the parameter design of power converters. In the proposed AI-D approach, to achieve automation in the analysis and deduction process, simulation tools and batch-normalization neural network (BN-NN) are adopted to build data-driven models for the optimization objectives and design constraints. Besides, to achieve automation in the optimization process, genetic algorithm is used to search for optimal design results. The proposed AI-D approach is validated in the circuit parameter design of the synchronous Buck converter in the 48 V to 12 V accessory-load power supply system in electric vehicle. The design case of an efficiency-optimal synchronous Buck converter with constraints in volume, voltage ripple and current ripple is provided. In the end of this paper, feasibility and accuracy of the proposed AI-D approach have been validated by hardware experiments. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

In this paper, we study the problem of multi-institutional regionalization of primary health care units. The problem consists of deciding where to place new facilities, capacity expansions for existing facilities, and demand allocation in a multi-institutional system to minimize the total travel distance from demand points to health care units. It is known that traditional exact methods as branch-and-bound are limited to solving small- to medium-size instances of the problem. Given that real world-instances can be large, in this paper we propose an iterated greedy algorithm with variable neighborhood descent search for handling large-scale instances. Within this solution framework, several methods are developed. A greedy constructive method and two deconstruction strategies are developed. Another interesting component is the exact optimization of a demand allocation subproblem that is obtained when the location of facilities is previously fixed. An empirical assessment using real-world data from the State of Mexico's Public Health Care System is carried out. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed metaheuristic in handling large-scale instances. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Modifications in land use and occupation, caused mainly by anthropization in both urban and rural regions, alter processes in the hydrological cycle. Such changes to watershed often lead to conflicts regarding the multiple water uses, due to issues in water quantity or quality. Mathematical models are a useful tool in determining and foreseeing such conflicts, as well as analyzing potential solutions and compromises to them. Among those, process-oriented simulation models can predict different behaviours undertaken by water throughout distinct media, enabling a comprehensive view on the watershed. This article describes the development of a generic aggregated hydrological model in a programming environment, coupled with an empirical buildup/washoff model. These models were then implemented in a region of the Alto Paranapanema watershed, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. © 2020 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The use of robotics in rehabilitation is a growing area of research, with the potential to greatly improve the quality of life for individuals with impairments. Robotic exoskeletons, in particular, have shown promise for enhancing mobility and independence in patients with conditions such as stroke. Current exoskeleton designs, however, often lack the necessary degrees of freedom (DOFs) to provide adequate balance and support during activities of daily living (ADLs), such as walking and standing. This study proposes a new lower limb exoskeleton design incorporating a variable stiffness hip joint based on a four-bar mechanism. This joint provides additional DOFs for improved balance and stability during gait, making it easier for patients to perform ADLs. The results show that the exoskeleton effectively improves stability during gait testing. This suggests that the proposed design can greatly enhance mobility and independence in impaired patients and could be a valuable tool in rehabilitation robotics.
