MnBi2Te4 (MBT) is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator with the interaction of spin-momentum locked surface electrons and intrinsic magnetism, and it exhibits novel magnetic and topological phenomena. Recent studies suggested that the interaction of electrons and magnetism can be affected by the Mn-doped Bi2Te3 phase at the surface due to inevitable structural defects. Here we report an observation of nonreciprocal transport, i.e. current-direction-dependent resistance, in a bilayer composed of antiferromagnetic MBT and nonmagnetic Pt. The emergence of the nonreciprocal response below the Néel temperature confirms a correlation between nonreciprocity and intrinsic magnetism in the surface state of MBT. The angular dependence of the nonreciprocal transport indicates that nonreciprocal response originates from the asymmetry scattering of electrons at the surface of MBT mediated by magnon. Our work provides an insight into nonreciprocity arising from the correlation between magnetism and Dirac surface electrons in intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. © 2022, CC BY.

Atomic-level defects in van der Waals (vdW) materials are essential building blocks for quantum technologies and quantum sensing applications. The layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr is an outstanding candidate for exploring optically active defects owing to a direct gap in addition to a rich magnetic phase diagram including a recently hypothesized defect-induced magnetic order at low temperature. Here, we show optically active defects in CrSBr that are probes of the local magnetic environment. We observe spectrally narrow (1 meV) defect emission in CrSBr that is correlated with both the bulk magnetic order and an additional low temperature defect-induced magnetic order. We elucidate the origin of this magnetic order in the context of local and non-local exchange coupling effects. Our work establishes vdW magnets like CrSBr as an exceptional platform to optically study defects that are correlated with the magnetic lattice. We anticipate that controlled defect creation allows for tailor-made complex magnetic textures and phases with the unique ingredient of direct optical access. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Droughts are natural hazards that exist in nature and can have a serious impact on the environment and society, which includes water shortages, crop failures, fires and, in some cases, soil manipulation. To assess and predict droughts, various methods, such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), were designed to segregate drought trends and excess rainfall over a period ranging from 3 to 48 months. This study proposes an innovative approach to predicting drought use, the Evolutionary Polynomial Expansion with Feature Selection (EPEFS) model, a hybrid method that integrates polynomial regression with feature selection to increase accuracy and interpretability. The methodology was applied to historical precipitation data from six meteorological stations in Türkiye, covering the period from 1971 to 2016. The drought index Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used as the primary indicator, with predictions made for three different time scales: SPI-3, SPI-6 and SPI-12. Furthermore, a time series cross-validation strategy was employed to ensure performance assessment. The EPEFS model obtained R2 coefficients of 0.880, 0.903 and 0.929 for SPI-3, SPI-6 and SPI-12, respectively, surpassing the other models analyzed. Furthermore, the model presented less complexity in the generated expressions. The results suggest that the EPEFS model holds promise as a robust and interpretable tool for drought forecasting, with potential applications in early warning systems and mitigation strategies. © 2025 The Authors

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative tauopathy associated with repetitive head impact (RHI) exposure. Genetic variation in the 17q21.31 region, containing microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT), has been implicated in tauopathies but has not been investigated in CTE. The region includes a megabase-long inversion (H1/H2) and copy-number variations, including α, β, and γ segments, which can be characterized as nine segregating structural haplotypes. We leveraged array SNP data and a reference panel across the 17q21.31 region to impute structural haplotypes and test their association with CTE endophenotypes in 447 European ancestry brain donors with RHI exposure. The H1β1γ1 haplotype was significantly associated with dementia and semi-quantitative tau burden in multiple cortical and medial temporal regions commonly affected in CTE. H1β1γ1 differential expression analyses in dorsolateral frontal cortex implicated cis-acting genes and inflammatory pathways. Taken together, the H1β1γ1 haplotype may help explain CTE heterogeneity among those with similar RHI exposure. © 2025 The Authors

This study introduces and evaluates a novel, integrated solar energy system for achieving sustainable and zero-energy residential buildings. The proposed system integrates photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) solar panels, heat pumps, electrolyzers, fuel cells, reverse osmosis desalination units, and thermal storage tanks to simultaneously supply electricity, heating, cooling, and potable water. A primary challenge in solar energy systems—the intermittency of energy production—is addressed using energy storage solutions, including hydrogen-based electrolysis and fuel cell systems, which stabilize the supply across day-night cycles. The energy system is designed to meet the energy demands of a 160-unit residential complex in San Diego, each unit covering 110 m 2 . A dynamic simulation over an entire year is performed using TRNSYS software. System optimization is conducted via Response Surface Methodology (RSM), targeting three objective functions: total power capacity, life cycle cost (LCC), and thermal comfort represented by the predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) index. Optimization system is based on five key decision variables: solar PVT area, fuel cell capacity, electrolyzer capacity, heat pump capacity, and hydrogen tank size. Results demonstrate that, under optimized configurations, the system achieves an annual electricity output of 29,145.8 kWh/year, an LCC of $894,228, and a PPD index of 6.8 %, fully meeting the residential complex’s electricity demand of 200 MWh/year. The results validate the effectiveness of the hybrid system in enhancing efficiency, ensuring system reliability, and mitigating environmental impacts, thus offering a scalable solution for zero-energy building applications.

Structural colors generated due to light scattering from static all-dielectric metasurfaces have successfully enabled high-resolution, high-saturation, and wide-gamut color printing applications. Despite recent advances, most demonstrations of these structure-dependent colors lack post-fabrication tunability. This hinders their applicability for front-end dynamic display technologies. Phase-change materials (PCMs), with significant contrast of their optical properties between their amorphous and crystalline states, have demonstrated promising potentials in reconfigurable nanophotonics. Herein, we leverage tunable all-dielectric reflective metasurfaces made of newly emerged classes of low-loss optical PCMs, i.e., antimony trisulphide (Sb2S3) and antimony triselenide (Sb2Se3), with superb characteristics to realize switchable, high-saturation, high-efficiency and high-resolution dynamic meta-pixels. Exploiting polarization-sensitive building blocks, the presented meta-pixel can generate two different colors when illuminated by either one of two orthogonally polarized incident beams. Such degrees of freedom (i.e., material phase and polarization state) enable a single reconfigurable metasurface with fixed geometrical parameters to generate four distinct wide-gamut colors. We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, an electrically-driven micro-scale display through the integration of phase-change metasurfaces with an on-chip heater formed by transparent conductive oxide. Our experimental findings enable a versatile platform suitable for a wide range of applications, including tunable full-color printing, enhanced dynamic displays, information encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. © 2021, CC BY.

Blocking artifact, characterized by visually noticeable changes in pixel values along block boundaries, is a general problem in block-based image/video compression systems. Various post-processing techniques have been proposed to reduce blocking artifacts, but most of them usually introduce excessive blurring or ringing effects. This paper presents a deep learning-based compression artifacts reduction (or deblocking) framework relying on multi-scale residual learning. Recent popular approaches usually train deep models using a per-pixel loss function with explicit image priors for directly producing deblocked images. Instead, we formulate the problem as learning the residuals (or the artifacts) between original and the corresponding compressed images. In our deep model, each input image is down-scaled first with blocking artifacts naturally reduced. Then, the learned SR (super-resolution) convolutional neural network (CNN) will be used to up-sample the down-scaled version. Finally, the up-scaled version (with less artifacts) and the original input are fed into the learned artifact prediction CNN to obtain the estimated blocking artifacts. As a result, the blocking artifacts can be successfully removed by subtracting the predicted artifacts from the input image while preserving most original visual details.

Can a robot be a personal dating coach? Even with the increasing amount of conversational data on the internet, the implementation of conversational robots remains a challenge. In particular, a detailed and professional counseling log is expensive and not publicly accessible. In this paper, we develop a robot dating coaching system leveraging corpus from online communities. We examine people’s perceptions of the dating coaching robot with a dialogue module. 97 participants joined to have a conversation with the robot, and 30 of them evaluated the robot. The results indicate that participants thought the robot could become a dating coach while considering the robot is entertaining rather than helpful. © 2020, CC-BY.

CSMA/CA has been widely accepted as a Media Access Control scheme for Inter-Vehicle Communication systems. In CSMA/CA, a mobile station waits a frame transmission during a backoff interval based on random value. Then, the mobile station transmits the frame if the others do not transmit any frames. In this paper, we evaluate system performances of CSMA/CA from the viewpoint of a time efficiency and average frame delay time varying the range of random value by network simulations.
