Aim The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial, marine, freshwater and subterranean). Location Worldwide, 12,343 sites, all ecosystem types. Time Period 1991 to present. Major Taxa Studied All soniferous taxa. Methods We synthesise sampling coverage across spatial, temporal and ecological scales using metadata describing sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa and audio recording parameters. We explore global trends in biological, anthropogenic and geophysical sounds based on 168 selected recordings from 12 ecosystems across all realms. Results Terrestrial sampling is spatially denser (46 sites per million square kilometre—Mkm 2 ) than aquatic sampling (0.3 and 1.8 sites/Mkm 2 in oceans and fresh water) with only two subterranean datasets. Although diel and lunar cycles are well sampled across realms, only marine datasets (55%) comprehensively sample all seasons. Across the 12 ecosystems selected for exploring global acoustic trends, biological sounds showed contrasting diel patterns across ecosystems, declined with distance from the Equator, and were negatively correlated with anthropogenic sounds. Main Conclusions PAM can inform macroecological studies as well as global conservation and phenology syntheses, but representation can be improved by expanding terrestrial taxonomic scope, sampling coverage in the high seas and subterranean ecosystems, and spatio-temporal replication in freshwater habitats. An industrial enterprise in a competitive environment undergoing constant change, which wishes to be recognized as World Class, needs a management model that affords its executives a systemic vision. Aware of the need to define an effective and efficient model to manage a company, executives should always ask how it should be defined, implemented and continuously evaluated. In this context, the article presents a computer system, referred to herein as the Socrates CEO Robot, based on the scientific conceptual model (Complex Adaptive Systems Integrating the Decision Making Process in Industrial Companies) presented by Wollmann and Steiner (2014). The capacity of Socrates to aid the integrated and systemic decision process is verified in competitive business environments of the e-tangram business simulator. The results show that Socrates is capable of managing an industrial enterprise in a virtual competitive environment generated in a business simulator (usually referred to as a business game).

An identification and characterization of biodiesel fatty acid based by using dielectric sensor

The fatty acids composition is identified by a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS), then it is characterized in saturated and unsaturated components. This paper investigates biodiesel fatty acid by using dielectric constant measurements and focuses on dielectric sensor based on biodiesel chemical properties characterization. The objectives of this paper are identification fatty acids and determination of correlation dielectric properties and biodiesel fatty acid characterization. The proposed method is dielectric constant by using capacitance sensor are applied to determine the response dielectric sensor from the fatty acid composition. Sixteen fatty acid methyl esters were identified and two characterizations the amount of saturated and unsaturated fatty ester fractions. The model parameter was determined by regression analysis for estimating the relationships among fatty acid content and dielectric properties. The results show that measurements of electrical properties, successfully used for the characterization of fatty acids. The dielectric constant of biodiesel was found increasing as the saturated decreases. This relationship becomes calibration for the assessment of the quality of biodiesel based on the dielectric sensor. The model reveals that the fatty acid composition affects the value of the biodiesel dielectric and show that dielectric sensor potentially to handle for characterization of biodiesel fatty acid content.

In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

Humans sense of touch consists in a complexity of sensors and nervous system. The information inferred by this system enables the daily dexterous manipulation tasks. In biological systems, there is no conscious prioritization of sensors while performing tactile exploration and the selection of exploratory movements is driven by learning instincts and data gathered by previous movements. The development of artificial systems tries to mimic such systems with engineered sensors and strategies for movement selection. This paper presents a data-driven analysis to the problem of sensor selection in the contour following for shape discrimination task. This task consists of a 4-DOF robotic finger exploring a set of 7 synthetic shapes. The data collected from the motors, inertial measurement unit, and magnetometer was analyzed applying principal component analysis and a multilayer perceptron neural network. Results show the variation of classification rate depending on the fingertip material and sensor considered. It is worth to observe that the magnetometer was the most robust in both cases. © 2015 IEEE.

A multiphysics study of the electromagnetic behavior of a filter designed for use in high-power microwave systems is presented. In the past, the methodology used to design filters generally assumed ideal working conditions for these devices. However, when such filters are used in a real environment, factors such as temperature and working power affect their performance. Here, we use modern simulation tools to evaluate the electromagnetic response of a filter at different temperatures and under different operating conditions.

This paper proposes the design scheme of direct sampling mixer (DSM) by which unallowable amplitude characteristics due to aliases spreading over relatively broad band is suppressed. It is pointed out that the periodic frequency characteristic of a stage processing decimated signal causes decrease of attenuation in the stopband of the DSM, and an IIR section with a low decimation rate is employed as the first stage. A DSM the amplitude characteristic of which falls into the spectrum mask for IEEE 802.11 is designed as an example. Simulation results show that the designed DSM satisfies specification widely in not only the passband but also the stopband. It is confirmed that gradual decimation approach or use of a non-decimated section for the first stage is effective. © 2016 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

This paper proposes a new application based on fuzzy logic to search the optimal Step Size of the Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithm for beamforming systems. The searching of the step size depends on the fuzzy inference results of an estimation of the final value of the cost function (J_E) instead of using its instantaneous value. The update of the step-size is performed outside of the adaptive algorithm and given it feedback by the fuzzy inference system;therefore the step-size is still fixed for the NLMS algorithm but variable for the complete searching scheme. Simulation experimental results show that a useful approximation of the optimal step-size can be obtained for different conditions of signal-to-noise plus interference ratios (SINR) and the minimization of the mean square error for the adaptive beamforming algorithm is also achieved.

In this paper, we have proposed Single Inductor Dual Output (SIDO) buck-buck and boost-boost DC-DC converter using improved RC ripple regulator control. The proposed SIDO buck-buck converter has the characteristics of lowripple and high control frequency. RC ripple regulator control can not be applied to SIDO boost-boost converter because RC ripple regulator undergoes self-excited oscillation and two self-excited oscillating controllers make the SIDO converter unstable. Thus we proposed the priority circuit for RC ripple regulator control. The proposed control circuit improves response characteristic and simplicity of the control circuit. Simulations are performed to verify the validity of the proposed SIDO converter. Simulation results indicate good performance of the proposed SIDO converter. © 2016 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.
