A rapid antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) is desperately needed in clinical settings for fast and appropriate antibiotic administration. Traditional ASTs, which rely on cell culture, are not suitable for urgent cases of bacterial infection and antibiotic resistance owing to their relatively long test times. Here, we describe a novel AST called single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA) that can determine antimicrobial susceptibility by automatically analyzing and categorizing morphological changes in single bacterial cells under various antimicrobial conditions. The SCMA was tested with four Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard bacterial strains and 189 clinical samples from hospitals. The results were compared with the gold standard broth microdilution test. The SCMA results were obtained in less than 4 hours with 91.5% categorical agreement and 6.51% minor, 2.56% major, and 1.49% very major discrepancies. Thus, SCMA provides rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility data.

The selection of features is generally the most difficult field to model in BCIs. Therefore, time and effort are invested in individual feature selection prior to data set training. Another great difficulty regarding the model of the BCI topology is the brain signal variability between users. How should this topology be in order to implement a system that can be used by large number of users with an optimal set of features? The proposal presented in this paper allows for obtaining feature reduction and classifier selection based on software agents. The software agents contain Genetic Algorithms (GA) and a cost function. GA used entropy and mutual information to choose the number of features. For the classifier selection a cost function was defined. Success rate and Cohen's Kappa coefficient are used as parameters to evaluate the classifiers performance. The obtained results allow finding a topology represented as a neural model for an adaptive BCI, where the number of the channels, features and the classifier are interrelated. The minimal subset of features and the optimal classifier were obtained with the adaptive BCI. Only three EEG channels were needed to obtain a success rate of 93% for the BCI competition III data set IVa.

This paper presents an Ethernet sniffer programmed in ANSI C to export in an on-line way the electroencephalographic (EEG) data acquired with the device BrainNet36®, which is a Brazilian EEG device for clinical and polysomnography purposes. The sniffer proved to be useful for off-line analysis of the EEG and also for on-line applications, as Brain Computer-Interfaces (BCIs). Despite its limitations and packet losses at around 1.7% due to noise, the off-line analysis of the EEG successfully replicated results of the literature regarding the Event-Related (De)Synchronization (ERD/ERS) and Evoked Potentials (EPs) calculated for mental tasks. For on-line applications the sniffer was used to program a single-switch BCI for on-line classification of motor and no motor mental tasks with high success rate. Nowadays, the BrainNet36® device is being used for EEG research at many Brazilian universities, therefore, we hope that this article may encourage on-line applications. Finally, as the sniffer operation is explained here with examples, this text may serve as a reference guide for potential user's. © 2014 IEEE.

In human body communication, it is important to investigate the input impedance characteristics of electrodes and transmission characteristics between transceivers for improving the qualities of communication and reducing power consumption. In this work, we studied the input impedance characteristics and transmission characteristics between a wristwatch device and a handheld device using both a three-dimensional electromagnetic field simulation and experiment at 10 MHz. The input impedance and transmission characteristics obtained from the simulation using a muscle homogenous model and those obtained from the measurement using a muscle-tissue-equivalent phantom showed good consistency. The calculated electric field around a human arm decreased as it moved away from the surface of the arm. This distribution of the electric field showed the advantages of human body communication, which are confidential communication and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Moreover, power consumption at the feeding point of the system was calculated from the transmission characteristics obtained from the simulation. This result indicated that human body communication achieves low-power consumption.

This paper presents a multiple case study concerning to the Integrated Product Development Process(IPDP) that involves the concepts of environmental sustainability and social inclusion to build solar water heating system made of discarded and recyclable materials in a way that People with Visual deficiency(Pw VD) can participate in its *** research proposes that engineering courses in a near future adopt the aspect of Citizenship Education systematically, contextualizing environmental impact reduction and social inclusion of people with *** technical procedure of the study was delineated according to IPDP phases defined in two multidisciplinary strands leading to raw materials data collection through recycling and manufacturability with accessibility process to develop the product *** analysis of the results presents the tooling developed for manufacturing with accessibility of people with visual impairments and the efficiency of the prototype *** the end, it is placed the relevant notes observed during the research and sustainable assignments in social and environmental dimensions for the education of engineering professionals.

This paper presents a comparison among three methods for Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) detection. These techniques are based on Power Spectral Density Analysis (PSDA) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). The first method estimates the signal-to-noise ratio of the power spectrum in each stimulus frequency using PSDA, which is called Traditional-PSDA. The second analysis estimates the relation between the difference of the stimulus frequency and its neighbor frequencies, using the power spectrum in these neighbor frequencies, and seeks the neighbor frequency which presents the lowest relation value. This technique is referred to Ratio-PSDA. The third and final techniques called Hybrid-PSDA-CCA. The performances of the methods were evaluated using a database of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The EEG signals were recorded from 19 volunteers, from which six people present disabilities. They were stimulated with visual stimuli flickering at 5.6, 6.4, 6.9 and 8.0 Hz. The system performance was evaluated considering the accuracy, the Information Transfer Rate (ITR) and the computational cost for several windows length of each stimulus frequency. The results showed that the Hybrid-PSDA-CCA method achieved the best result with an average accuracy of 91.14%.

Heavily-doped strained germanium (Ge) can emit light efficiently thanks to its pseudo direct band gap characteristic. This makes Ge a good candidate for on-chip monolithic light sources in silicon (Si) photonics systems. We propose fin-shaped Ge-Si heterojunction lightemitting diode (LED) with metal gates, which can enhance light emission by coupling with surface plasmon resonant modes and modulate light emission from the LED. We verify these two aspects through numerical analysis and device simulations. We develop the method to find the optimal device structure and specific device dimensions to maximize the spontaneous emission rate enhancement. Also we find that the LED can be modulated by a gate voltage bias. © 2014 Optical Society of America.
