This paper presents an automatic stress-relieving music recommendation system (ASMRS) for individual music listeners. The ASMRS uses a portable, wireless photoplethysmography module with a finger-type sensor, and a program that translates heartbeat signals from the sensor to the stress index. The sympathovagal balance index (SVI) was calculated from heart rate variability to assess the user's stress levels while listening to music. Twenty-two healthy volunteers participated in the experiment. The results have shown that the participants' SVI values are highly correlated with their prespecified music preferences. The sensitivity and specificity of the favorable music classification also improved as the number of music repetitions increased to 20 times. Based on the SVI values, the system automatically recommends favorable music lists to relieve stress for individuals.

Considering that technical skill is the major determinant characteristic of success among competitive swimmers, it is important to coaches to quantify the differences that make one swimmer more efficient than another. One of the most important grants in swimming is the velocity, which can be related to drag forces and provide substantial information about the swimmer technique. The main purpose of this study was to determine the best model to compare swimmers in terms of velocity. In this work, a Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) was used to model the nonlinearity of swim velocity time series. The RBF-NN parameters were adjusted by using four multiobjective optimization methods. The best results in terms of RBF-NN configuration were obtained by the Differential Evolution based algorithms.

This paper presents an Ethernet sniffer programmed in ANSI C to export in an on-line way the electroencephalographic (EEG) data acquired with the device BrainNet36 ® , which is a Brazilian EEG device for clinical and polysomnography purposes. The sniffer proved to be useful for off-line analysis of the EEG and also for on-line applications, as Brain Computer-Interfaces (BCIs). Despite its limitations and packet losses at around 1.7% due to noise, the off-line analysis of the EEG successfully replicated results of the literature regarding the Event-Related (De)Synchronization (ERD/ERS) and Evoked Potentials (EPs) calculated for mental tasks. For on-line applications the sniffer was used to program a single-switch BCI for on-line classification of motor and no motor mental tasks with high success rate. Nowadays, the BrainNet36 ® device is being used for EEG research at many Brazilian universities, therefore, we hope that this article may encourage on-line applications. Finally, as the sniffer operation is explained here with examples, this text may serve as a reference guide for potential user's.

A new two-phase mathematical model of Linear Induction Motor (LIM) is discussed. This model is simpler than conventional model, but can correctly calculate both asymmetric primary current and thrust ripple performances. In addition, an improved DC testing method is proposed to determine all circuit parameters in the model. This test is completed by only one simple standstill test. Hence, both no-load steady-state operation and lock tests which are difficult to carry out on built-in LIMs are unnecessary. The proposed calculation method is implemented on a 3-phase, 4-pole and 12-slot single-sided LIM, and is validated by experimental and simulation results.

Ultrasonic velocity profiler method is now an accepted tool in modern experimental fluid mechanics and fluid engineering. As a relative new technology, different applications and improvements of the technique are being researched over the last years. This paper presents an environment to develop new algorithms to improve the ultrasonic velocity estimation technique. The system uses the LabVIEW modular platform integrated with mathematical script language used in many signal-processing software. The phase-shift algorithm was implemented and tested using the proposed system. The results are validated with standard velocity measurements generated by a rotating cylinder.

Such configurations are able to compensate voltage sags/swells in three-phase four-wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. This paper presents a shunt active power filter (SAPF) topology, based on the concept of a transformer with open-end winding (OEW), for reactive power and harmonic compensations employed in three-phase four wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed system uses two independent dc-links and two independent converters series connected through transformers. Complete system control, including PWM technique, is developed and a comparison between the proposed SAPF and conventional one is presented as well. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the theoretical approach.
