This paper proposes a model based predictive controller for direct power control of DFIG. The control law is derived by optimization of an objective function that considers the control effort and the difference between the predicted outputs (active and reactive power) and the specific references, with predicted outputs calculated using a linearized state-space model. Because the generator leakage inductance and resistance information were required for this control method, the influence of the estimation errors for these parameters was also investigated. Simulation results are presented for validation the proposed controller.

Writer identification recently has been considerably studied due to its various applications in forensic and commercial sections. Because offline, text-independent writer identification has limited requirements in writing sample collection, it has wider applications and meanwhile more difficult to handle. By considering handwriting images as visually distinctive textures, we propose a new method for offline, text-independent writer identification based on multiscale version of Gaussian Markov Random Fields (GMRF) model. The handwriting features are extracted in wavelet domain of handwriting textures in which global texture feature (such as directional information) from handwriting can be detected. In addition, GMRF is investigated to capture different local spatial structures of graphemes (character-shape) written by different people. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms both 2-D Gabor model and wavelet-based GGD method.

Auto landing is a very important function of control in the development of autonomous unmanned *** this paper,the stereo vision system is proposed to provide the height information on landing control instead of global positioning system(GPS).GPS provided 3-axis information,but the height error of GPS is usually in meters,which is not accurate enough for *** stereo vision system provided a more accurate height information to correct the error of *** this paper,the stereo vision system is composed of two webcams and the variable baseline method is selected to increase the measurement *** results show that variable baseline method did increase the accuracy of the stereo vision system with the webcams,and that not only provided an authentic piece of height information but also provided another option of sensor for autonomous unmanned helicopter's auto landing control.

An approach is proposed for obtaining electro-cardiographic potential from adult lying with underwear and pajamas during sleep. This method is based on capacitive coupling involving the electrode, the cloth and the skin. A developed device was fabricated to explore the feasibility of the approach and evolution experiments were conducted for 5 men. Validation of the system revealed the following: (1) The frequency response of the device with underwear and pajamas revealed that the gain of the detected signal was reduced. (2) The signal displayed a periodic waveform synchronized with the simultaneously recorded ECG, even when underwear and pajamas was inserted between the electrode and the skin. ECG signal can be measured even all body position. (3) In overnight measurement, detection rate of R-wave for each subject was more than 95 %. Although there is still room for improvement in terms of its practical use, the developed device appears promising for application to bedding as a non-obtrusive and awareness-free method for ECG monitoring during sleep. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

As a result of a series of papers and special sessions held at FIE between 2004 and 2008, a community of CSET educators interested in exploring feminist pedagogies has formed at FIE. Past participants in these sessions have expressed a desire to learn more about what makes a set of pedagogies "feminist." At the same time, there has been an increase in the number of research papers at FIE that draw on feminist research methods or topics. This workshop is designed to meet the needs of members of the FIE community who have some experience with feminist pedagogies or research methods, and who are looking to develop intellectual relationships with others also working in engineering educational research. We will discuss the history of feminist education and feminist research methods in the US, including a connection to science and engineering education;participants will then work in small groups focusing on a sub-topic (feminist pedagogies, feminist research methods, and feminist research topics/content). We invite participants to bring part of a project (such as a syllabus or course plan, assignment, class or research project, research question or protocol) to this workshop;some time will be dedicated to the guided design/redesign of this project. © 2009 IEEE.

Frontiers in Education has a history of special sessions focused on alternative and/or feminist pedagogies, and they have tended to attract a wide range of participants with varying levels of experience with such pedagogies. This special session is designed as an introduction to various alternative teaching philosophies and pedagogies, building on the past interest in such sessions and on the increasing interest in exploring philosophies of education in the context of engineering education. We will introduce participants to various theoretical frameworks of alternative pedagogies through a summary model, and facilitate small group discussions of three cases where alternative pedagogies have been or could be implemented. It is hoped that this introductory session will make such alternative pedagogical ideas more accessible to a larger number of CSET educators, allowing them to better participate in the rich and thriving conversation developing at FIE on using philosophies of engineering and education to envision new models for CSET education. © 2009 IEEE.

The basic electrical insulation design of 2.5 MJ conduction cooling high temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage (HTS SMES) have been studied in this paper. The high voltage is generated both ends of magnet of HTS SMES by quench or energy discharge. Therefore, the insulation design of the high voltage needs for commercialization, stability, reliability and so on. In this study, we analyzed the insulation composition of a HTS SMES, and investigated about the insulation characteristics of the materials such as Polyimide, Al O, GFRP and vacuum at cryogenic temperature. Base on these results, the basic insulation design for 2.5 MJ conduction cooling HTS SMES was performed. © 2009 IEEE.

The finger vein image acquired with an acquisition system should be properly aligned to proceed with comparing algorithm. However it is not easy to find control the points since the images are naturally blurred with an inherent scattering property. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel finger vein registration method utilizing skin surface information (i.e. wrinkles and outlines). We assumed that finger crooking was insignificant. Images were sampled with intended translation and rotation. Each time, two images were acquired successively by switching the light source;one with infrared light and the other with white light. Degree of rotation and translation of sampled image were calculated using outline features in the white light image and then the infrared image was transformed according to the calculated data. To validate our method, correlation values were computed between identical subjects and different subjects. High correlation values were shown between identical subjects whereas low values were shown between different subjects. © 2009 SPIE.

Binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO) provides a wider view of fundus with stereopsis contrary to the direct one. Proposed system is composed of portable BIO and 3D viewing unit. The illumination unit of BIO utilized high flux LED as a light source, LED condensing lens cap for beam focusing, color filters and small lithium ion battery. In optics unit of BIO, beam splitter was used to distribute an examinee's fundus image both to examiner's eye and to CMOS camera module attached to device. Captured retinal video stream data from stereo camera modules were sent to PC through USB 2.0 connectivity. For 3D viewing, two video streams having parallax between them were aligned vertically and horizontally and made into side-by-side video stream for cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the data were converted into autostereoscopic video stream using vertical interlacing for stereoscopic LCD which has glass 3D filter attached to the front side of it. Our newly devised system presented the real-time 3-D view of fundus to assistants with less dizziness than cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the BIO showed good performance compared to conventional portable BIO (Spectra Plus, Keeler Limited, Windsor, UK). © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.

Authentication using finger vein pattern has substantial advantage than other biometrics. Because human vein patterns are hidden inside the skin and tissue, it is hard to forge vein structure. But conventional system using NIR LED array has two drawbacks. First, direct contact with LED array raise sanitary problem. Second, because of discreteness of LEDs, non-uniform illumination exists. We propose non-contact finger vein acquisition system using NIR laser and Laser line generator lens. Laser line generator lens makes evenly distributed line laser from focused laser light. Line laser is aimed on the finger longitudinally. NIR camera was used for image acquisition. 200 index finger vein images from 20 candidates are collected. Same finger vein pattern extraction algorithm was used to evaluate two sets of images. Acquired images from proposed non-contact system do not show any non-uniform illumination in contrary with conventional system. Also results of matching are comparable to conventional system. We developed Non-contact finger vein acquisition system. It can prevent potential cross contamination of skin diseases. Also the system can produce uniformly illuminated images unlike conventional system. With the benefit of non-contact, proposed system shows almost equivalent performance compared with conventional system. © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.
