In this paper the authors propose a structural method for a genetic algorithm (GA) for the optimization problem of cable routing in which cables have to be laid optimally. When there are no limits on the layout routes, the optimal routes for the individual cables can be found using the Dijkstra method in a finite discrete graph. However, when there are limits on the capacity in the layout routes, optimization cannot be performed using the Dijkstra method. The proposed GA is a two-level hierarchical GA that uses chromosome coding involving two levels. The routes for each cable and the combinations of cable routes are defined respectively, and layout route selection is optimized overall through genetic operations involving these levels. Block crossover and block mutation are used as genetic operations in the first level. In addition, a method to take advantage of lethal genes, which do not satisfy the constraints and are generated in the second level is used. Computer simulations confirm that the two-level hierarchical GA with these genetic operations functions effectively for the optimization problem of cable routing. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper presents a design of robust load-frequency stabilizers of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) in coordination with a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC). As large load disturbances with changing frequency in the vicinity of the inter-area oscillations mode occur in an interconnected power system, a system frequency may be heavily perturbed and oscillatory. To stabilize frequency oscillations, a coordinated SMES with SSSC can be applied. On the other hand, variations of system parameters, several load changes etc., cause system uncertainties. To take such uncertainties into account, the multiplicative uncertainty is included in a system modeling. The structure of frequency stabilizer equipped with SMES and SSSC is a second-order lead/lag compensator. Control parameters of frequency stabilizers are automatically tuned by a tabu search. Simulation studies in a two-area interconnected power system confirm the effect of coordinated SMES with SSSC.

This paper- studies different error control schemes in wireless sensor networks with Bluetooth technology. The tradeoff between reliability and energy consumption of Bluetooth packets are analyzed, using different error control techniques, such as retransmission and channel coding The AUX1 packet is utilized for custom coding and also are proposed adaptive techniques based on the number of hops of the network. The wireless channel is modeled with Rayleigh fading. The results obtained may be used as references to determine the packet type in a sensor application. © 2005 IEEE.

AC loss is one of the most important parameters in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) ac devices. Among the HTS ac power devices, the transformer is the essential part in the electrical power system. But unfortunately, the transformer is the worst device concerning ac loss because of very large magnetization loss due to high magnetic field applied to the HTS wire. We calculated the magnetization losses in HTS pancake windings for transformer according to the operating temperature. Two kinds of arrangements of HTS pancake windings were adopted for calculation of ac loss of shell-type transformer, and the analysis results were presented and discussed. © 2005 IEEE.

Acoustically coupled spaces have drawn increasing attention in architectural acoustics community. Measurements of multiple decay times in acoustically coupled spaces are of practical significance when studying and designing acoustics of the coupled spaces. Traditionally, however, identification of double- or multiple-sloped sound energy decay in room impulse response measurements has been considered very challenging. Previous works [Xiang and Goggans, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 110, 1415-1424 (2001);113, 2685-2697 (2003)] have applied Bayesian inference to cope with the demanding tasks in estimating number of decay modes and multiple decay times from Schroeder decay functions, evaluated from measured room impulse responses. This paper discusses recent development of efficient calculation of relevant decay parameters. We will show that Bayesian probability theory provides useful tools for the measurement of decay times. Analysis results of Bayesian approaches will be demonstrated upon experimentally measured room impulse responses.

A lateral aperture with a round profile ideal for patch clamping is created by isotropic dry etching through a silicon micropartition between two microchannels. A special package design is introduced to establish an air-tight fluidic and electrical interface between the chip and the pipette holder of a commercial patch clamp amplifier. The electrical resistance across the lateral aperture with a diameter of 7.5μm ranges from 0.5MΩ to 0.7MΩ. Cells in suspension injected into the microchannel can be actively manipulated towards the lateral patch aperture by microfluidic flow control. Nearby cells can be successfully trapped via suction applied through the aperture. Copyright © 2005 by the Transducer Research Foundation, Inc.

System dynamics of supply chain network organization structure

Information technology is providing manufacturers with additional flexibility with regard to their supply chain network choices. Our research studies supply chain network organization structures categorized by the organic and mechanistic management control structures. The structural impacts on cost and fill rate performance are studied in two-echelon and two-supply-chain network organization models under different market coordination conditions using system dynamic simulations. Our results show significant effects of demand and network structural factors, and their interactions, on these measures. As demand becomes dynamic, the cooperative interaction model, where supply chains cooperate to satisfy customer demand, is found to have better system performance than the competitive supply chain model. The analysis also suggests that increasing the responsiveness at the downstream plant is particularly important to the overall system performance improvement.

This paper is concerned with the problems of finite horizon H/sub /spl infin// filtering, prediction and fixed-lag smoothing for linear continuous-time systems with multiple delays. By applying an innovation approach in Krein space, a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an H/sub /spl infin// filter, predictor or smoother is derived. The estimator is given in terms of the solution of a partial differential equation with boundary conditions. The innovation approach in Krein space enables us to convert the very complicated deterministic estimation problem into a stochastic one to which a simple H/sub 2/ innovation analysis method can be adapted. The result of this paper demonstrates that the Krein space approach is powerful in solving otherwise very complicated H/sub /spl infin// problems. Our result is in contrast with many recent sufficient conditions for H/sub /spl infin// filtering of delay systems.
