In this paper, a new approach is presented for robust filtering of a linear discrete-time signal by applying fictitious noise. Modeling errors, in both the numerator and denominator of the transfer functions, are parameterized by using random variables with zero mean and known covariance. The robust performance is obtained by minimizing the mean square estimation error over all of the random parameter and noise. To derive a robust estimator, the uncertainties in the model are incorporated into two mutually uncorrelated fictitious noises with zero means. The covariances of the fictitious noises are computed by using two formulas that are presented in this paper. An illustrative example shows the effectiveness of our approach.

We investigated the relationship between the intracranial pulse pressure (ICP/sub PP/) and the mean intracranial pressure (ICP/sub M/). In adult patients, several research groups have described a linear relationship between ICP/sub PP/ and ICP/sub M/ within the range of cerebral autoregulation. Current monitoring and therapy are mainly based on the mean ICP/sub M/, since it is believed that the ICP/sub M/ contains most of the information provided by the other pulse morphology metrics. In this paper we attempt to answer whether there is further information within the ICP morphology not explained by ICP/sub M/ that might be of prognostic significance. We screened ICP records of 42 patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Doernbecher Children's Hospital for segments in which the ICP/sub M/ varied at least 5 mmHg during a 1-hour period. We found 54 segments in 9 different pediatric TBI patients (ages 0.2-17.8 years, mean=9.9 years). ICP/sub PP/ and ICP/sub M/ were calculated for each pulse using an automatic pressure detection algorithm. The coefficient of linear correlation r was > 0.70 in 43/54 segments (p < 0.001), which indicates that there exists a linear relationship between ICP/sub PP/ and ICP/sub M/. However, we found r > 0.90 only in 16/54 segments (p=NS) . This result and visual inspection of ICP/sub PP/ vs. ICP/sub M/ density plots suggest that ICP pulse pressure is not fully explained by the ICP M.

The experiences of three institutions that introduced a potentially controversial workshop to large portions of its faculty demonstrate the strengths and pitfalls of various approaches. Changing traditional practices and the underlying a way of thinking are nearly impossible without acceptance at some level by faculty and administrators. Too many educators in engineering continue to teach the way they were taught. Demands placed on today's graduating engineers are quite different, as it the make up of that graduating class.

This paper addresses the problem of robust /spl Hscr//sub /spl infin// filtering for linear discrete-time systems subject to parameter uncertainties in the system state-space model and with multiple time delays in the state variables. The uncertain parameters are supposed to belong to a given convex bounded polyhedral domain. A methodology is developed to design a stable linear filter that assures asymptotic stability and a prescribed /spl Hscr//sub /spl infin// performance for the filtering error, irrespective of the uncertainty and the time delays. The proposed design is given in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which has the advantage in that it can be implemented numerically very efficiently.

The problem of robust H/spl infin/ filtering for continuous-time uncertain linear systems with multiple time-varying delays in the state variables is investigated. The uncertain parameters are supposed to belong to a given convex bounded polyhedral domain. The aim is to design a stable linear filter assuring asymptotic stability and a prescribed H/spl infin/ performance level for the filtering error system, irrespective of the uncertainties and the time delays. Sufficient conditions for the existence of such a filter are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which can be efficiently solved by means of powerful convex programming tools with global convergence assured. An example illustrates the proposed methodology.

The problem of robust H∞ state-feedback control design for a class of continuous-time linear systems with Markovian jumping parameters and multiple time-varying delays at the states, and subject to uncertain parameters is addressed in this paper. It is assumed that the jumping parameters are available and the uncertain parameter belong to given convex bounded domains (polytope type uncertainty). A delay-independent sufficient condition assuring robust mean square stability and a prescribed level of H∞ disturbance attenuation for the closed-loop system is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities. © 2001 EUCA.

This paper presents a methodology for the segmentation and analysis of the tissues in color images of leg ulcers. The segmentation is obtained through an automatic analysis made in the RGB and SI channels by changing from the RGB color space to the HSI color space. The aim is to determine which of the five channels have the characteristic that will make the segmentation process more efficient. After the analysis, the selected channel is segmented and used as a mask over the original image, allowing that only the inner tissues of the wound be analyzed. The analysis is done through predetermined functions that attribute membership grade for each processed pixel as well as its level of engagement in a specified tissue class. The article also shows the results obtained from both the segmentation and analysis of tissues using the proposed method.

He is a retired reserve Lieutenant Commander with surface warfare nuclear power and naval control of shipping/convoy qualifications. He was commissioned 1976 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute NROTC program with a bachelor of engineering degree in nuclear engineering and minor in history and political science. His active duty service includes USS Mississippi (CGN 40) USS South Carolina (CGN 37) USS Texas (CGN 39) Commander Naval Surface Force Atlantic Fleet (Readiness and Training) staff and Commander Naval Air Force Pacific Fleet (Ship's Material) staff. He graduated in 1997 from the Naval War College College of Naval Command and Staff through the Non-Resident Seminar Program. He graduated in 1998 from the USDA Graduate School Leadership Development Academy Executive Potential Program.

Many discussions and articles address the business and military changes supporting implementation of Joint Vision 2010 and its system-of-systems approach. The dynamics of international military operations and commitments, coupled with accelerating information technologies, can lead to confusion and uncertainty Customary rules recommend caution, even stopping, when confusion and uncertainty are present, yet the needed changes counsel toward accelerated efforts. Currently, systems engineering does not completely address delivering "operational war fighting capabilities," or foster commanders' confidence to fully exploit those capabilities upon delivery. Acquisition reform supports accelerating delivery of systems. likewise, accelerated delivery of "war fighting capabilities" within any opponents' fielding and deployment cycle is imperative. Technical advances in modeling and simulation, utilization concepts, and innovative evaluation methods create an opportunity to facilitate codevelopment of doctrine, operations, and training prior to producing hardware systems. On-line simulation and evaluation tools can overcome the need for physical systems. Specifically, this paper lays out the opportunity to evolve systems engineering to another level, operational engineering, which leverages from the modeling and simulation environment, prior to hardware production. That modeling and simulation paired with coevolution of procedures and on-line analysis will produce a trained customer base, fully prepared for deliveries of "operational war fighting capabilities".

The problems of power and energy shortage (natural or associated with the advisability of load management) allocation at different levels of territorial, temporal, and situational hierarchy of consumption control are formulated within the framework of multicriteria optimization models. This permits one to realize a new technology of load management providing consideration and minimization of diverse negative consequences of power and energy shortage allocation and creation of incentive influences for consumers. The solution of multicriteria problems is based on the Bellman-Zadeh approach to decision making in a fuzzy environment. The advantages and capabilities opened by its application are discussed. The results of the paper are realized within the framework of an adaptive interactive decision making system, which can be used in allocating diverse types of resources or their shortages.
