Social learning is focused for that learning occurs within a social context, in a place where people can work and learn collaboratively. New technologies, such as social network, wiki, blogs, among others social tools, enable collaborative work and are important facilitators of social learning process. These tools provide an easy mechanism for people to communicate and collaborate, which help in the creation of knowledge. However, collaboration is one of the several necessary components for learning. It is important that all acquired knowledge be organized to be reused faster, easily and efficiently. This paper aims to propose an approach to generate learning objects from social tool, in order to organize the information to be easily reused, improving social learning.

In the beginning of the 21 st century we experienced a paradigm shift between the acute and infectious diseases to the chronic conditions, sustained by the aging of the population. Nevertheless, the education system for health professionals kept the traditional educational models. The main idea of the work here presented is to provide a literature review of the state of the art of information and communication technology (ICT) applied to Long-term and Palliative Care. We conducted an exhaustive investigation from Pubmed and Google Scholar using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms “information and communication technologies”, “e-Health”, “m-Health” and “long-term care”, “palliative care”. Currently, the existence of a critical mass of Internet users allows quickly diffusion of electronic communication in the medical practice, which translates as a new way to look at the doctor-patient relationship. It is important to define the various ways in which one can establish a doctor-patient communication, ensure the security and confidentiality of the information, create practical and “user friendly” interfaces that can be easily used by patients and ensure universal access to new technologies. Despite the existence of some literature on new information technologies applied to the health context, few papers trace the connection between these same information technologies and long-term and palliative care. We believe that the absence of literature on this theme relates to the emphasis of personal contact in such situations and the lack of quality records. More research is needed on this subject.

Organizational learning is an area that helps companies to improve their processes significantly through the reuse of experiences. An area that may help in this way is social learning. Collaborative tools, such as social network and wiki, enable collaborative work and are important facilitators of social learning process. However, collaboration is one of the several necessary components for learning. Therefore, it is important that all acquired knowledge be organized to be reused faster, easily and efficiently. Therefore, we propose using learning objects to organize the content inserted in collaborative tools. There are some learning object metadata to describe relevant learning objects characteristics and to catalog them. As these metadata are proposed to describe educational learning objects, they do not contemplate organizational characteristics, important for knowledge-intensive organizations. Moreover, the metadata are formally modeled through the XML-Schema language, which has a lack of expressiveness. Thus, trying to solve these limitations, the paper presents an ontology for organizational learning object based on IEEE LOM standard. The paper describes the ontology building process, following all the activities proposed in Methontology. Some experiments to evaluate the ontology are also presented.

A variety of network deployments in disaster recovery, fire fighting and military scenarios create networks that do not form a connected network all the time. In such scenarios, paths between a source and destination may be created over time when nodes encounter each other due to node mobility. Many routing algorithms that can route messages in such delay-tolerant networking (DTN) settings have been proposed. Currently, these protocols do not differentiate between the messages that are being routed through the network treating all messages equally. But, there are DTN scenarios, in particular in military situations, where it is critical that messages are differentiated based on their importance to the task being supported. In this paper, we propose extensions to two popular DTN routing protocols, Epidemic and PROPHET, to implement such message prioritization. We implemented the proposed extensions in ONE (Opportunistic Network Emulator) and studied the performance of these extensions. Results from our simulation analysis demonstrate that it is possible to implement message prioritization in non-deterministic delay tolerant networks and provide us with insights into configuring message prioritization in DTN. In particular, the importance of selecting optimal queue lengths at each node to mitigate congestion in such networks. © 2012 IEEE.

Many routing algorithms that can route messages in such delay-tolerant networking (DTN) settings have been proposed. Each of these proposals presents simulation and/or analytical results to demonstrate improved performance in comparison with other known protocols. This paper proposes a common framework that defines multiple important components through which performance of these protocols can be compared using simulation experiments. This framework includes performance metrics that can be used for comparison, simulation environment, new mobility models and results in organizing the various known protocols based on their ability to predict a path. In a case study using the framework, we demonstrate how the predictive ability of PROPHET may or may not result in significant performance gains, depending on the mobility model.

This paper provides an interdisciplinary reflection on the nature meaning-making involving users and animated gestural interfaces. In particular, we propose a new model for analysis of creative computing systems incorporating gestural input into dynamically animated interfaces. Our contributions are based on a theoretical framework synthesizing embodied cognition approaches in cognitive science, phenomenology in philosophy, and user interface design in computing. We introduce the term enduring interaction to refer to the phenomenon of bodily and conceptually engaging interaction within constantly changing computational environments. Our construct centralizes the issue of how users' motor-sensory experiences inform their construction of meaning in the design of interactive systems. We argue that creative computing systems, a class of artifacts including types of hobbyist websites, video games, and computer-based artworks, require a new design perspective quite distinct from user-centric interface design approaches focused on productivity-oriented applications. Using examples including outcomes of the Gestural Narrative and Interactive Expression (GeNIE) project (Harrell, PI;Chow and Erik Loyer collaborators) along with existing prevalent, exceptional, or historically significant artifacts, we articulate a continuum of various kinds of engagement, showing design implications of our perspective, enabling users to use gestural interaction (through multi-Touch and gyroscope/accelerometer-based input devices) to result in narratively salient, evocative, and even intimate interaction mechanisms in interactive narrative environments. This paper reports on the architecture and performance of the Creative Artificially-Intuitive and Reasoning Agent Caira as a conductor for improvised avant-garde music. Caira's listening skills are based on a music recognition system that simulates the human auditory periphery to perform an Auditory Scene Analysis (ASA). Its simulation of cognitive processes includes a comprehensive cognitive calculus for reasoning and decision-making using logic-based reasoning. Caira is used as conductor for live music performances with distributed ensembles, where the musicians are connected via the internet. Caira uses a visual score and directs the ensemble members based on tension arc estimations for the individual music performers.

This paper consists in a novel transport protocol description for Delay-Tolerant Networks and Disruption Tolerant Networks (both DTN). This protocol was designed to offer a better information delivery rate in DTNs scenarios. Fountain codes techniques are used to achieve our needs. The performance results were tested taking into account the hosts buffer size, the TTL (Time To Live) of the messages and the amount of redundant information generated into the network. A better delivery rate and performance were achieved using the proposed protocol.
