Visualization skills are believed to be a strong indicator of success in engineering, science, and a variety of other careers. Previous studies have compared the visualization skills of first year engineering students in the US with their cohorts in Europe and Brazil, but to date there have been no data reported for developing countries in Africa. Studies have shown that training can enhance visualization skills in a relatively short time. This paper will report on the results of a study of first year engineering students at the polytechnic of namibia that have been exposed to a short course to improve visualization skills.

In her article, Shirley Bethune reviews the legislative and policy-based efforts undertaken by namibia in its efforts to combat desertification. Ms Bethune outlines namibia's legislative history in this area and its focus on issues pertaining to land and natural resource management, water, agriculture, forestry, poverty, population and economic policy. She finds that by giving desertification issues priority in national policy making, and by subjecting its policies to periodic review, efforts to combat desertification in namibia have made progress.

Since the inception of our bush-encroachment decision support system, we have gone through many cycles of adaptations while striving towards what we believed to be a usable system. A fundamental difference between community based users and individualistic users necessitates a change in the design and evaluation methods as well as a community agreement of concepts and values guiding the design. In this paper we share the lessons learned along the story depicting the metamorphosis of a bush encroachment decision support system in Southern African rangelands. Above and beyond community members participating in the design and evaluation of the system, they establish the community grounded values determining the system's quality concepts such as usability.
Statistical distributions are useful in predicting patterns of failure and hence, are employed in failure and reliability analysis. Reliability analysis is relatively easier when time variance is linear. However, for ...

The aim of this workshop is to facilitate collaboration between employers, educational institutions and students to jointly promote work-integrated learning through ePortfolio development. Many tertiary institutions worldwide require students to have completed internships before, during or after their studies. For the purpose of this paper, internship as part of a formalised curriculum is referred to as work integrated learning (WIL). Participatory design trends will be applied during this workshop to particularly obtain a better understanding of the challenges and current practices in work integrated learning to find possible solutions for future engagement with all stakeholders.
