Team effectiveness is crucial to the success of a project. It is important to measure the processes that teams perform, in order to evaluate and improve new practices. Results from a mapping study categorizing the measurement methods applied to these processes identify the most popular approaches and the need for first degree observational methods. This paper describes a data collection technique for observing team processes. A case study performed with senior students is set up to validate the method. A questionnaire was submitted to participants to identify issues related to data accuracy. Illustrative analyses demonstrate that the episode measurement method can be used to observe team process patterns. The data from the questionnaire indicate that the method does not pose as a significant threat to the internal validity of a study, and that it is useful for observing the dynamic processes in which teams engage to resolve task demands. Numerical simulation of unsteady sheet/cloud cavitation

Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) coupling with mass transfer cavitation models was used to resolve the turbulent flow structure with cavitation. Kubota and Merkle cavitation models were tested. As part of the work, the Merkle model is implemented into CFX by User Fortran code because this model has shown good cavitation prediction capability according to the literature. The results will focus on the unsteady cavitation shedding dynamics around NACA66 hydrofoil. The predicted results compare well with the experimental measurements for unsteady sheet/cloud cavitating flows. Numerical visualizations of cloud cavity evolution and surface pressure signals show relatively good agreement with the experimental data.

Selective Sampling design refers to the situation where a study has a fixed number of observations but can decide to allocate them differently among the variables during the data gathering phase, such that some variables will have a greater ratio of missing values than others. In particular, we can decide to allocate more, or less missing values to uncertain variables: those for which the relative frequency is closer to 50% (higher uncertainty), or further from 50% (lower certainty). The main objective of the study is to investigate how a Selective Sampling process helps improve the performance of classification methods. This study specifically asks: "Can Selective Sampling affect the performance of the classification methods?" We focus on the three different classification models of Naïve Bayes, Logistic Regression and Tree Augmented Naive Bayes (TAN) for binary datasets. Three different schemes of sampling are defined: 1-Uniform (random samples) as a baseline, 2-Most Uncertain (higher sampling rate of uncertain items) and 3-Least Uncertain (lower sampling rate of uncertain items). We investigate the impacts of these different schemes on the performance of the three models on 11 different datasets. The results from 100 fold cross-validation show that Selective Sampling in all of the datasets improves the prediction performance of the TAN model and, in more than half of the datasets (54.6%), brings a higher prediction performance to Naïve Bayes and Logistic Regression classifiers.

Automatic label assignment to graphical objects is an important problem in many applications such as cartography, online maps and graph drawings. In this paper, we present efficient algorithms for automatic label assignment to execution trace items (points or lines) in a trace visualization tool. The proposed label assignment algorithms aim to maximize the number of labeled items as well as increase the quality of assignments. The algorithms take into account both the topological and semantic relationships (e.g. level of details, repetitiveness, etc.) between the trace items in order to achieve assignments that are both quantitative and qualitative. The proposed method also supports assigning multiple labels to each trace item. The algorithms have been implemented and applied to different input traces. The experimental results show that considering the relationships between data items increases the labeling success rate and the quality.

This paper presents results from an experience of transferring the CLAN clone detection technology into a telecommunication industrial setting. Eleven proprietary systems have been analyzed for a total of about 94 MLOC of C/C++ and Java source code. The characteristics of the analyzed systems together with a description of the Web portal that is used as an interface to the clone analysis environment is described. Reported results include figures and diagrams about clone frequencies, types, and similarity distributions. Processing times including parsing, clone clustering, and Dynamic Programming visualisation are presented. A discussion about lesson learned and future research work is also presented from an industrial point of view for real life practical applications of clone detection.

In this work, we propose a novel fast and accurate method based on keypoints and temporal information to solve the registration problem on planar scenes with moving objects for infrared-visible stereo pairs. A keypoint descriptor and a temporal buffer (reservoir) filled with matched keypoints are used in order to find the homography transformation for the registration. Inside a given frame, the problem of registration is formulated as correspondences between noisy polygon vertices. Sections of polygons are matched locally to find the corresponding vertices inside a frame. These correspondences are then accumulated temporally using a reservoir of matches for homography calculation. Results show that our method outperforms two recent state-of-the-art global registration methods by a large margin in almost all tested videos.

Throughout the life cycle of an aircraft, its avionic architecture can be updated or re-configured leading to what we call the iterative integration problem. In particular, new avionics functions of mixed criticality must be added to computation modules. This can cause a modification of the scheduling parameters, inducing a re-certification of modules, whose cost depends on the criticality level of the modified functions. We define a new approach to help the system designer in producing a proper modified scheduling at a minimal cost while satisfying some real-time constraints. The emphasis is put on the iterative process and we focus on Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) architecture supported by a time-triggered network. First, we give a general formalization of the problem and provide some results on the real-time constraints considered. In particular, we show how they can directly be taken into account in the variable domains. Then, our approach consists in formalizing the problem as a Binary Integer Problem. Thus, using an off-the-shelf solver, an optimal scheduling minimizing the cost can be automatically determined.

In general, the problem of change detection is studied in color space. Most proposed methods aim at dynamically finding the best color thresholds to detect moving objects against a background model. Background models are often complex to handle noise affecting pixels. Because the pixels are considered individually, some changes cannot be detected because it involves groups of pixels and some individual pixels may have the same appearance as the background. To solve this problem, we propose to formulate the problem of background subtraction in feature space. Instead of comparing the color of pixels in the current image with colors in a background model, features in the current image are compared with features in the background model. The use of a feature at each pixel position allows accounting for change affecting groups of pixels, and at the same time adds robustness to local perturbations. With the advent of binary feature descriptors such as BRISK or FREAK, it is now possible to use features in various applications at low computational cost. We thus propose to perform background subtraction with a small binary descriptor that we named Local Binary Similarity Patterns (LBSP). We show that this descriptor outperforms color, and that a simple background subtractor using LBSP outperforms many sophisticated state of the art methods in baseline scenarios.

software metrics have many uses, e.g., defect prediction, effort estimation, and benchmarking an organization against peers and industry standards. In all these cases, metrics may depend on the context, such as the programming language. Here we aim to investigate if the distributions of commonly used metrics do, in fact, vary with six context factors: application domain, programming language, age, lifespan, the number of changes, and the number of downloads. For this preliminary study we select 320 nontrivial software systems from Source Forge. These software systems are randomly sampled from nine popular application domains of Source Forge. We calculate 39 metrics commonly used to assess software maintainability for each software system and use Kruskal Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test to determine if there are significant differences among the distributions with respect to each of the six context factors. We use Cliff's delta to measure the magnitude of the differences and find that all six context factors affect the distribution of 20 metrics and the programming language factor affects 35 metrics. We also briefly discuss how each context factor may affect the distribution of metric values. We expect our results to help software benchmarking and other software engineering methods that rely on these commonly used metrics to be tailored to a particular context.

Trends in SoC design are leading to 3D integration of thousands of high-performance computing resources and high-throughput interconnects, opening up new research directions for hybrid electronic/photonic architectures. In this paper, we introduce how state of the art silicon-photonic devices can realize elementary operations that are traditionally performed by electronic devices, e.g. circuit switching and Boolean function computation. We then highlight how these devices need to be assembled in order to realize more complex functions, taking into account the constraints specific to silicon-photonic technology. In the last part, we summarize the main research directions for the near future.
