Today's converged networks are mainly characterized by their support of real-time and high priority traffic requiring a certain level of quality of service (QoS). In this context, traffic classification and prioritization are key features in providing preferential treatments of the traffic in the core of the network. In this paper, we address the joint problem of path allocation and admission control (JPAC) of new Service Level Agreements (SLA) in a DiffServ domain. In order to maximize the resources utilization and the number of admitted SLAs in the network, we consider a statistical bandwidth constraints allowing for a certain overbooking over the network's links. SLAs' admissibility decisions are based on solving to optimality an integer linear programming (ILP) model. When tested by simulations, numerical results confirm that the proposed model can be solved to optimality for real-sized instances within acceptable computation times and substantially reduces the SLAs blocking probability, compared to a the Greedy mechanism proposed in the literature.

The intent of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the knowledge flow in software project development. The model presented identifies five knowledge sources linked to five basic cognitive factors. The knowledge flow model is applied on a software project developed by a team of undergraduate students enrolled in a capstone project during the 2008 winter semester at Ecole polytechnique de montreal. Five cognitive factors-acquisition, crystallization, realization, synchronization, and validation-are present throughout a collaborative project. The relative effort expended in each of the cognitive factors varies significantly during a projectpsilas development. This study presents a new knowledge based perspective for evaluating and measuring software engineering processes.

In this paper, we propose a fuzzy feature-based method for online body tracking using an IP PTZ camera. Because the camera uses a built-in Web server, camera control entails response time and network delays, and thus, the frame rate is irregular and generally low (3-7 fps). Our method has been designed specifically to perform in such conditions. It detects in every frame, candidate targets by extracting moving targets using optical flow, a sampling method, and appearance. The target is detected among samples using a fuzzy classifier. Results show that our system has a good target detection precision (> 93%), and low track fragmentation.

A clone classification scheme is presented based on the structure of the abstract syntax tree (AST) of a system and on the similarity measures between syntactic blocks of source code. Syntactic blocks in a system may represent classes, methods, statement blocks, and so on. An inclusion relation may exist between the source code lines of some of these blocks, depending of the syntactic structure of the source code. For example, a block corresponding to a method body may contain several possibly nested statement *** paper introduces an algorithm to identify different types of clone relations between blocks that are either method bodies or statement blocks. Clone relation types between these blocks are interesting because they indicate properties of the structural relation of these clones and may give hints on re-factoring opportunities. The proposed structural type clone classification scheme has been investigated on two open source Java systems, Tomcat and Eclipse. Experimental results are presented. Execution time performance of clone classification has been measured and reported. Results and further proposed research are discussed.

Bacteria can be used as computer-controlled bioactuators and means of propulsion for microrobots and other micro-scaled entities to accomplish precise operations as first proposed by our research group in [1] and demonstrated later experimentally in [2]. The last reference confirmed that the propulsion force provided by the flagella being connected to molecular motors embedded in the bacterial cell, could be exploited to replace more conventional technologies being presently used in robotics but which could not be implemented at such a scale. In a coherent effort, our group also pioneered a method of not only harnessing instead of mimicking nature by using flagellated bacteria and more specifically Magnetotactic Bacteria (MTB) for propulsion and transport, but also for the controlled steering or computerized directional swimming control of bacterial micronanorobots [3].

Ad hoc interactions characterize the natural behaviors observed in any teamwork situation. Our objective is to find out how these interactions are related to the roles team mates play. Observations on the phenomenon are based on audio-video recordings of software development team interactions occurring in a large software development organization with a highly standardized software development process in place. Detailed observations were recorded on the activities of four of the twelve members of the development team. Thirty-five hours of audio-video recordings were analyzed, in which a total of 404 face-to-face ad hoc collaborative interactions were observed. The results provided a quantitative demonstration of the impact of a newcomer, a ldquogururdquo, and a project manager on the team dynamics. This study, although conducted in a specific professional environment, can provide useful information for a better understanding of the face-to-face communication needs of a software development team.

Standard transmission methods such as RF have been considered for untethered robots that need to send messages and information to an external computer. But, as the overall sizes of such robots decrease, the implementation of such transmission systems within the space and power constraints becomes more challenging. For microrobots, the challenge is even greater and furthermore, the overall size of such microrobots can often decrease to a level where the implementation of transmitters as we know them today, cannot be implemented due to several reasons. First, known transmitters require a relatively large amount of electrical power, which is a concern for microrobots. Indeed, a power source such as a battery cannot be embedded since it will be much larger than the microrobot itself. Power can be induced but again, the size of the reception coils capable of providing sufficient electrical power for the transmitter would also be much larger than the robot itself. Another constraint is the overall size of the transmission antennae which would be larger than a single microrobot. As such, a new transmission scheme that can be embedded in an intelligent microrobot with overall dimensions slightly larger than the human hair thickness is briefly introduced. When operating in proximity of an extremely sensitive magnetic receptor, a small electrical current provided by miniature photovoltaic cells on top of the microrobot can be used to generate a local electromagnetic field perturbation sufficiently high to be detected. By modulating such local electromagnetic field from sensory information captured by the microrobot, data and communication commands can be transmitted based on sensory information to an external central computer that could be used to coordinate a swarm of such intelligent microrobots.

A real-time positioning and tracking technique for untethered devices or robots magnetically propelled by a clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system is described. The local magnetic field induced by the device, composed of a ferromagnetic material, is used as a signature to localize the device on three one-dimensional projections. A high-precision 3D circular-motion system was used to assess the precision and accuracy of this method. The integration of this technique inside propulsion and imaging MRI sequences was also achieved to demonstrate the feasibility of this tracking scheme in a closed-loop control scheme. Finally, in vivo tracking during automatic navigation of an untethered device in the carotid artery of a living animal is demonstrated.

Towards swarms of communication-enabled and intelligent sensotaxis-based bacterial microrobots capable of collective tasks in an aqueous medium

Experimental data and proofs of concepts are used to show the feasibility of providing the basic components and functionalities required for the implementation of intelligent untethered 150 × 300µm bacterial microrobots capable of sophisticated collective tasks under computer supervision and coordination. More specifically, we show that it is possible to embed within such microrobots, photovoltaic cells supplying ∼4µW necessary to power an internal microelectronic circuit providing embedded intelligence with the capability to communicate commands and data wirelessly to an external computer. We also show that such data or commands transmitted wirelessly could be used to instruct an external computer to send a swarm of flagellated bacteria to move such microrobots towards a specific target based on various sensory information acquired with specific sensors embedded in each microrobots. Similar to chemotaxis used by several species of flagellated bacteria, the algorithms used to move such microrobots could be governed by a larger range of sensory means, leading to what we refer to here as sensotaxis-based hybrid microrobots. The possibility of transmitting a request to a central computer to send a swarm of flagellated magnetotactic bacteria to provide propulsion and steering in order to move accurately to desired locations would allow such microrobots to perform collective tasks. A simple example suggesting the possibility of implementing accurate collective tasks by such hybrid microrobots is demonstrated experimentally where a microstructure emulating a V-shaped microrobot is moved and rotated autonomously using a swarm of approximately 3000 flagellated bacteria towards another similar V-shaped microstructure to form the character ‘M’ as in Microrobot.
