Stress can affect all people, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. The human body uses stress as an adaptive response against several situations, but it can cause physical, mental or emotional distress. In stress situation the nervous system evokes the same physiological responses, whatever the type of stress and these responses cause changes in the physical, cognitive, emotional and social performance. This paper proposes to develop a methodology for analyzing the stress level using electroencephalographic signals (EEG) based on asymmetry patterns of alpha waves. The subjects of this research are professionals from Vitoria's Fire Department. Activities of the Central Nervous System are capture using Emotiv Epoc Headset, placed on the volunteer's scalp. The signals are analyzed from the frontal cortex at positions Fp1 (AF3), Fp2 (AF4), F3 and F4, according to of the international 10-20 system. The results are analyzed together with some peripheral physiological signals, such as: heart beat rate (ECG), peripheral blood flow, skin conductance, breath rate, body temperature and change in level of salivary cortisone. In addition, a psychological assessment of voluntary's stress is performed through a questionnaire of LIPP-ISS (Inventory of Symptom Stress). A validation study is conducted through a comparison with data available in literature, as well as with evaluation conducted by a psychologist. The results are analyzed in order to get a correlation between EEG signals and physical, mental or emotional stress.

The identification of stress-related emotional states allows the use of a passive single-switch BCI (passive-ssBCI) together with a main multi-class BCI. Thus, the passive-ssBCI could work in the background of the main BCI, allowing it to recognize stress-related emotions and to switch to a “stress mode”, which allows a better adaptation to the user current mental state, leading the system to better success rates. Frontal cortex asymmetry gave evidence that greater right frontal activity seems to be more highly related to negative emotional states. In this work, index of asymmetry of alpha band was computed by comparing the power of contra-lateral frontal electrodes. Discrete Wavelet transformation was used to decompose the EEG signals in frequency bands. The power spectral density was then calculated using modified Hamming periodogram. Signals from a public database for the analysis of human affective states, which was labeled with volunteers self-assessment scores, were employed. In order to label negative stress-related emotional state, rules based on valence, arousal and dominance dimensional emotions were defined. The results were promissory, because computed index of asymmetry in the alpha band indicated activity into the right frontal hemisphere was higher than the left one for seven out of nine volunteers during negative emotional states. This index could be employed as switch to a “stress mode” in a passive-ssBCI.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the modulation of the systemic inflammatory processes and skeletal muscle morphology in an experimental sepsis model (cecal ligation and puncture, CLP). Study design: Seventy-two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group (CG);sepsis group (SG) where rats were submitted to CLP but without LLLT treatment, and the sepsis laser-treated group (SLG). Laser irradiation (GaAlAs laser, continuous wave, 808 nm, 30 mW, 48 s, 30 J/cm2, 0.028 cm2, 1.07 mW/cm2) was performed immediately after surgery and every 24 h at 4 points (on the middle of tibialis anterior and diaphragm, bilaterally), through the punctual contact technique. All sepsis animals were sacrificed at 6, 24, 48 and 72 h post-surgery. The immunohistochemistry analysis was used to verify the expression of proteins related to the regulation of muscle wasting (MuRF-1 and atrogin). In order to investigate the action of LLLT on inflammatory mediators in the rat sepsis model, two inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-10, were evaluated. Results: The results showed that the laser-treated animals presented a lower IL-6 activity and decreased atrogin and MuRF-1 immunoexpression. However, no difference was observed in muscle cross-sectional area between the experimental groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that LLLT was able to decrease the systemic inflammation and muscle atrophy markers, preventing muscle protein degradation. © by De Gruyter 2015.

Background: Elderly people suffer from skeletal muscle disorders that undermine their daily activity and quality of life;some of these problems can be listed as but not limited to: sarcopenia, changes in central and peripheral nervous system, blood hypoperfusion, regenerative changes contributing to atrophy, and muscle weakness. Determination, proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells in the regenerative process are regulated by specific transcription factors, known as myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs). In the elderly, the activation of MRFs is inefficient which hampers the regenerative process. Recent studies found that low intensity laser therapy (LILT) has a stimulatory effect in the muscle regeneration process. However, the effects of this therapy when associated with aging are still unknown. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of LILT (λ = 830 nm) on the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of aged rats. Subjects and methods: The total of 56 male Wistar rats formed two population sets: old and young, with 28 animals in each set. Each of these sets were randomly divided into four groups of young rats (3 months of age) with n = 7 per group and four groups of aged rats (10 months of age) with n = 7 per group. These groups were submitted to cryoinjury + laser irradiation, cryoinjury only, laser irradiation only and the control group (no cryoinjury/no laser irradiation). The laser treatment was performed for 5 consecutive days. The first laser application was done 24 h after the injury (on day 2) and on the seventh day, the TA muscle was dissected and removed under anesthesia. After this the animals were euthanized. Histological analyses with toluidine blue as well as hematoxylin- eosin staining (for counting the blood capillaries) were performed for the lesion areas. It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers
