FPGA implementation of low cost and low power chaotic encryption scheme based on a discrete-space chaotic map

The exponential growth of the number of devices connected to the Internet and the use of IoT applications increases the amount of data exchange over public channels in low-cost and low-power embedded systems. Images are the most widely shared files, and standard symmetric algorithms such as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) are optimized for text but not image encryption. Consequently, new approaches like chaotic encryption have attracted researchers’ interest. Chaotic encryption schemes have been analyzed mostly from a software standpoint, but recent advancements in the field, through the use of discrete chaotic maps, enabled the development of simpler hardware implementations of ciphers with promising reductions in power and cost and increased performance. This work presents the Field-programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation of a simultaneous permutation-diffusion chaotic encryption scheme utilizing a discrete-space chaotic map. The FPGA implementation of the cipher is analyzed considering area, maximum frequency, and power consumption, and comparisons are made with the AES. The proposed algorithm has a satisfactory trade-off between area, power and performance, obtaining a peak throughput 59% higher than state-of-the-art symmetric ciphers in the literature. Thus, the proposed cipher shows that chaotic ciphers are viable for both high-performance and low-power embedded devices. Tests verified the security of the proposed cipher against statistical, differential, brute-force, and chosen plain-text attacks. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

The increasing presence of digital evidence in legal, criminal, and civil cases requires adaptations to traditional chain-of-custody processes to ensure the integrity of this evidence. This work proposes the use of blockchain technology, specifically through Hyperledger Fabric, to strengthen the chain of custody for digital evidence. The developed solution employs smart contracts to immutably record each stage of evidence handling, from collection to transfer of custody, ensuring data authenticity, integrity, and traceability. Our implementation demonstrates that blockchain technology can significantly reduce the risk of evidence tampering, improve process efficiency, and facilitate audits, thereby contributing to greater reliability in the presentation of evidence during judicial proceedings.

Research efforts in Quality of Service (QoS) management have usually addressed the problem under the network infrastructure perspective whereas a business-oriented perspective, named Service Quality Management (SQM), is being considered by industry. This paper point out differences and similarities between two approaches and addresses the main issues arising under SQM perspective. Here, QoS indicators and corresponding service levels are defined to provide a common understanding of service delivery, and a critical issue is to provide an effective way to evaluate them. Two evaluation modes are used: off-line and on-line. Off-line methods compute indicators values at the end of a pre-defined evaluation period, whereas on-line methods do it when a related event occurs. This work proposes an architecture for SQM systems and discusses the mechanisms for both off-line and on-line evaluation modes. ©2004 IEEE.

This article proposes an approach to generate test cases from BPMN models, for automated testing of Web applications implemented with the support of BPM suites. The work is primarily focused on functional testing and has the following objectives: (i) identify execution paths from the flow analysis in the BPMN model and (ii) generate the initial code of test scripts to be run on a given Web application testing tool. Throughout the article, we describe the design and implementation of a solution to achieve these goals, targeting automated tests using Selenium and Cucumber as tools. The approach was applied to processes from a public repository and was able to generate test scenarios from different BPMN models. © 2017 IEEE.

The expansion scenario in information technology has led to the need for the analysis of huge amounts of data to manage information for quick decision making. This paper presents an architecture for data visualization that uses semantic and structural interpretation as conjugated techniques for data analysis in different domains, through an interface which supports visualization strategies. A case study was carried out with a specialist in real-world agricultural context using data from dairy cattle to answer our research question. This paper presents an approach for speeding up the convergence of adaptive intelligent agents using reinforcement learning algorithms. Speeding up the learning of an intelligent agent is a complex task since the choice of inadequate updating techniques may cause delays in the learning process or even induce an unexpected acceleration that causes the agent to converge to a non-satisfactory policy. We have developed a technique for estimating policies which combines instance-based learning and reinforcement learning algorithms in Markovian environments. Experimental results in dynamic environments of different dimensions have shown that the proposed technique is able to speed up the convergence of the agents while achieving optimal action policies, avoiding problems of classical reinforcement learning approaches.

Microelectronic technology that supports the establishment of wireless sensor networks (WSN) has brought hope to the ease of Internet of Things (IoT) technology that can generate smart environments. A WSN consists of a collection of sensor nodes that are small, intelligent, and inadequate in storage, energy, and processing power. One of the well-known routing techniques in WSN is LEACH. There have been many LEACH studies and their development with random node distribution. Here we designed several scenarios in WSN routing with the position of the sensor nodes specified in the mapping area. MATLAB simulation results show network lifetime can be extended by reducing data packet size. In five experiments, the number of 40 nodes was the optimal number to extend network lifetime. Each scenario has advantages and disadvantages that can be referenced in developing the LEACH protocol. © 2020 IEEE.

This study aims to implement a machine learning technique in identifying the irregularities of customer behavior on the use of prepaid electricity pulses. The methods used are Linear Discriminant Analysis and Logistic Regression. The performance of the classification system will be evaluated using the 10-fold cross-validation technique. Validation results are measured using accuracy, precision and recall values. In this research shows that the use of machine learning technique has a good performance in classification of electrical consumption behavior. Experimental results with the different amount of data testing indicate that Logistic Regression method has high accuracy, precision, and recall value when compared with Linear Discriminant Analysis that is 100%. This is due to Logistic Regression method can predict irregularities accurately because the addition of the amount of data does not affect the performance of the method. © 2017 IEEE.

With the advancement of technology, information systems have become increasingly necessary in almost all areas, including healthcare. One of the technologies used to facilitate this progress is electronic medical records (EMRs). Although EMRs have improved service delivery and patient care in healthcare, they also pose risks to patient data due to cybercrime attacks, which can result in data theft and alteration of medical records. Medical identity theft has become a major issue in healthcare systems around the world, While technology has been beneficial in improving service delivery and patient care in healthcare, it has also introduced numerous risks to patient safety and ultimately impacted patient health. Cybersecurity issues have advanced with technology, thus increasing the rate at which medical identity thefts occur. The healthcare industry lags in curbing cybersecurity issues, and thus, it is vulnerable to many cyberattacks. To address these risks, techniques, and methods are needed to ensure the security of EMR systems against cybercrime attacks. This study used a literature review method and identified eleven articles that met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Through analysis of these articles, several techniques and methods were identified to secure the privacy system in EMRs, such as mIBE-AES, DES, and RSA methods. The literature review revealed that Encryption Data is the safest technique to use, as it is standardized, widely accessible, and cost-effective. Furthermore, mIBE-AES is the safest method for EMRs because it is both secure and efficient for storing medical record documents. Performance evaluations were conducted to test the level of security against cybercrime attacks. © 2023 IEEE.
