Cloud Platforms are heterogeneous, and users may face interoperability issues migrating applications or exchanging data among distinct clouds due, for instance, to the lack of standards solutions. Several solutions have been proposed to overcome lock-in situations, and middleware platforms are one of them. A semantic interoperability solution named middleware for Data as a Service (DaaS)/Database as a Service (DBaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS)—MIDAS has been developed to overcome this lock-in issue. It is an intermediate communication layer to retrieve data from DaaS or DBaaS through a Structured Query Language (SQL) or a Not Only SQL (NoSQL) created at the SaaS level. MIDAS is a platform for software execution, but software development needs support for its entire life cycle. Therefore, we propose the Model drIven Approach for MIDAS (MIAMI), which enables the specification of platform-independent middleware models and their use to generate code on different cloud platforms. MIAMI comprises a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) that enables middleware models and a transformation specification, which defines how these models can be converted to code. MIAMI offers a strategy for MIDAS specification and code generation phases to help middleware developers’ activities. MIAMI was applied to code generation specifications in Cloud Foundry, Amazon Web Services, OpenShift, and Heroku providers to evaluate our approach. This specification shows MIAMI’s feasibility and points out that MDD is a promising approach to improving cloud interoperability solutions. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Cloud computing (CC) is a paradigm that manages a pool of virtualized resources at infrastructure, platform, and software levels to deliver them as services over the Internet. Cloud Platforms are heterogeneous, and therefore cloud users may face interoperability and integration issues regarding consumption, provisioning, management, and supervision resources among distinct clouds. Due to the lack of standards in such a heterogeneous environment, an organization may face a lock-in situation. A middleware can minimize the effort to overcome lock-in problems. The MIDAS middleware ensures semantic interoperability between Software as a Service (SaaS) and Data as a Service (DaaS), and at the same times provides data integration between DaaS. Currently, MIDAS runtime implementations rely on Cloud Foundry, Amazon Web Services, OpenShift and, Heroku providers. To avoid ambiguity in MIDAS development and deployment an unambiguous definition of MIDAS architectural concepts must be provided. Thus, our work presents a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) comprising a metamodel of MIDAS semantic architecture and a Unified Modeling Language (UML) profile. To evaluate the DSML expressiveness, we instantiate several middleware models, and the findings demonstrate that our modeling language has an acceptable level of concepts to specify the middleware. An efficient multi-objective evolutionary approach for solving the operation of multi-reservoir system scheduling in hydro-power plants

This paper tackles the short-term hydro-power unit commitment problem in a multi-reservoir system - a cascade-based operation scenario. For this, we propose a new mathematical modelling in which the goal is to maximize the total energy production of the hydro-power plant in a sub-daily operation, and, simultaneously, to maximize the total water content (volume) of reservoirs. For solving the problem, we discuss the Multi-objective Evolutionary Swarm Hybridization (MESH) algorithm, a recently proposed multiobjective swarm intelligence-based optimization method which has obtained very competitive results when compared to existing evolutionary algorithms in specific applications. The MESH approach has been applied to find the optimal water discharge and the power produced at the maximum reservoir volume for all possible combinations of turbines in a hydro-power plant. The performance of MESH has been compared with that of well-known evolutionary approaches such as NSGA-II, NSGA-III, SPEA2, and MOEA/D in a realistic problem considering data from a hydro-power energy system with two cascaded hydro-power plants in Brazil. Results indicate that MESH showed a superior performance than alternative multi-objective approaches in terms of efficiency and accuracy, providing a profit of $412,500 per month in a projection analysis carried out. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

We search for gravitational-wave (GW) transients associated with fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst Project, during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 April 1 15:00 UTC-2019 October 1 15:00 UTC). Triggers from 22 FRBs were analyzed with a search that targets both binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star-black hole (NSBH) mergers. A targeted search for generic GW transients was conducted on 40 FRBs. We find no significant evidence for a GW association in either search. Given the large uncertainties in the distances of our FRB sample, we are unable to exclude the possibility of a GW association. Assessing the volumetric event rates of both FRB and binary mergers, an association is limited to 15% of the FRB population for BNS mergers or 1% for NSBH mergers. We report 90% confidence lower bounds on the distance to each FRB for a range of GW progenitor models and set upper limits on the energy emitted through GWs for a range of emission scenarios. We find values of order 10⁵¹-10⁵⁷ erg for models with central GW frequencies in the range 70-3560 Hz. At the sensitivity of this search, we find these limits to be above the predicted GW emissions for the models considered. We also find no significant coincident detection of GWs with the repeater, FRB 20200120E, which is the closest known extragalactic FRB. © 2023. The Author(s). Network interfaces are present in a variety of battery powered computer systems, such as notebooks, ultrabooks, tablets and mobile phones. Considering that the battery life is still a constraint, there are opportunities for power management by reducing the power consumption of idle network interfaces. In this work, a dynamic timeout power policy for network interfaces is presented, incorporating workload estimation and a problem optimization at runtime, thus providing power savings and suitable performance.

Most operating systems implement their own power management techniques, but it is hard to modify or hack their power policies without the source code. Many dynamic power management architectures have been proposed in the literature, but they are not integrated with the underlying OS power manager. In this work, we propose a software framework for user-level power management, with a flexible architecture to be adapted to different policies and integrated with OS power managers.

Power policies are widely applied at computer systems such as desktops, notebooks, and smartphones. For example, the timeout policy to turn off the display. A power management policy must be tested by measuring the power consumption of an experimental platform running workloads. Such tests must be fast enough to feedback the development process with valuable information about the power policy performance. In this work, we have presented a methodology for estimating computer systems power consumption for time scaled experiments. Using the proposed methodology, we have reduced the overall time for developing a power management policy.

Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a Distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.
