This paper is about modeling and control of a XY positioning table. It is described the construction and instrumentation of a double axis positioning system. It is developed a general electromechanical model, followed by the identification of simplified models for control purposes. At last, it is proposed a PID control strategy, tuned by Internal Model Control (IMC) technique.

Ferromagnetic materials have magnetic properties which determine its magnetic field conductivity characteristics. Such characteristics are extremely important for the proper selection and use of these materials in measurement processes, for example. Therefore, this paper presents an equipment for the characterization of ferromagnetic materials constructed in a laboratory. The experimental results of this equipment are acquired and compared with the experimental results obtained with an industrially manufactured apparatus called hysteresisgraph, designed to provide magnetic characterization of magnetic materials. The results of the comparison demonstrate that the equipment presented has low relative error and can be applied in academic projects which require magnetic characterization of ferromagnetic materials developed in the laboratory. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper proposes a low cost three-phase power quality meter. Due to its characteristics, the meter can be applied for residential or small businesses use. The proposed device uses the power definitions from IEEE Standard 1459-2010. Moreover, it calculates the true rms value, the individual harmonics, and the voltage unbalanced factor. In order to validate the power quality meter, simulations and experimental results are presented. The results are presented on a web page that can be accessed by any device with internet access.

This paper investigates three AC-DC-AC multilevel topologies for three-phase four-wire (3P4W) applications obtained from an interconnection of three-leg voltage source converters (VSCs). The topologies provide bidirectional power flow and can be applied in line voltage regulators, universal active power filters and uninterrupted power supplies (UPS). Operating principles, a pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique and an overall control strategy are developed. The PWM and control strategies are suitable to regulate the DC-link voltage and to optimize the harmonic distortion, reducing switching stress and power losses. Simulation results are used to compare the proposed configuration with a conventional solution in terms of harmonic distortion and semiconductor losses. Experimental results are presented to validate the theoretical considerations and were obtained by using IGBTs with dedicated drives and a digital signal processor (DSP) with appropriated plug-in boards and sensors.

An identification and characterization of biodiesel fatty acid based by using dielectric sensor

The fatty acids composition is identified by a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS), then it is characterized in saturated and unsaturated components. This paper investigates biodiesel fatty acid by using dielectric constant measurements and focuses on dielectric sensor based on biodiesel chemical properties characterization. The objectives of this paper are identification fatty acids and determination of correlation dielectric properties and biodiesel fatty acid characterization. The proposed method is dielectric constant by using capacitance sensor are applied to determine the response dielectric sensor from the fatty acid composition. Sixteen fatty acid methyl esters were identified and two characterizations the amount of saturated and unsaturated fatty ester fractions. The model parameter was determined by regression analysis for estimating the relationships among fatty acid content and dielectric properties. The results show that measurements of electrical properties, successfully used for the characterization of fatty acids. The dielectric constant of biodiesel was found increasing as the saturated decreases. This relationship becomes calibration for the assessment of the quality of biodiesel based on the dielectric sensor. The model reveals that the fatty acid composition affects the value of the biodiesel dielectric and show that dielectric sensor potentially to handle for characterization of biodiesel fatty acid content.

This paper describes the usage of the Matlab/Simulink and Ptolemy II environments as learning tools in the implementation of simulation models, which represent the decentralized multi-loop control system proposed for a fouling detection didactic platform. The platform is treated as a two-input two-output (TITO) plant with time delay, i.e., the voltage and current as the plant inputs and the flow and preßure as the plant outputs. In both the software environments, the control system is modeled as a cyber-physical system (CPS). Constructive details of each simulation model are shown, even as the main advantages and disadvantages of each learning tool are discußed and evaluated by engineering students.

An unidirectional single-phase three-wire rectifier is proposed in this paper. Such a proposed topology is composed of a non-controlled leg, two controlled legs and a capacitor bank. A suitable model and control strategy of the system, including a synchronization method, are proposed as well. The synchronization method, associated with the PWM strategy, imposes the grid currents to have the same phase angle of the generated voltages by rectifier. This method ensures sinusoidal grid currents and mitigate the zero-crossover distortions normally caused by the use of diodes. A comprehensive comparison with two conventional configurations is also presented in this paper. Simulation and experimental results are also presented for validation purposes.

In industrial systems' simulated environments the assimilation of technical procedures by the operators under training is enhanced by reproducing similar to real situations experienced in the workplace. The experience and learning acquired in simulators is directly related to the quality and realism of the proposed training scenarios. On the other hand, the experience acquired is even more conducive to good working practices when it involves situations known to lead into errors. Often training scenarios are dependent on the tutor's experience and the knowledge of operator difficulties in the work environment. This paper proposes a systematic approach for building training scenarios to be simulated, based on the analysis and reproduction of situations described in the working environment error reports. This approach is based on the instantiation of ontologies built for both domains, covering the knowledge on both the error situations and operator training scenarios. This study is focused in the domain of electric power systems operation.

This work introduces a family of Current Source Converters (CSCs) that allows to control single-phase AC converters with two outputs independently sharing the same DC-bus. It is presented four different topologies which have their own advantages and disadvantages compared to each other. The comparison criterias are the total number of switches, the number of conducting switches per switching cycle, quadrant operations and DC-bus current. One of the topologies needs to always have four conducting switches with full-quadrant operation (named Fq4c), while another topology (Lq2c) needs only two, however with limited-quadrant operation. The last two presented topologies have three conducting switches in a switching period, one with full-quadrant operation (Fq3c) and another with limited-quadrant operation (Lq3c). Also it is presented the Scalar Pulse Width Modulations (SPWMs) to control each converter with switching optimization. Details of the topologies, operation and modulation logic are presented. Simulations and experimental results are provided to validate the theoretical approach.

Classification of voltage disturbances in power systems is essential for modern society and can be very demanding according to the used method or the aimed accuracy. This paper presents a new intelligent approach aimed to automatically analyse power quality disturbances including sag, swell, outage, harmonics and normal waveform. The approach is based on Artificial Immune System and focuses on the application of a Clonal Selection Algorithm to extract features from disturbance waveforms and classify the disturbances in each 0.5 cycle of the fundamental frequency. Other important feature of the proposed approach is that it can be embedded since the resulted on-line classification tool achieves very low computational complexity. Comparisons and experimental results obtained from the application of the proposed method validate the approach and achieved a classification accuracy at least better than previous work. © 2015 IEEE.
