The disposal of eggshells in landfills presents an ongoing global environmental issue that demands immediate attention. However, a promising solution lies in utilizing eggshells as modifiers in bitumen binders, offering a sustainable approach to alleviating this burden. This study focuses on crushing eggshells to produce eggshell ash, which is then explored as a potential modifier in bitumen binders. The objective is to evaluate the properties of modified bitumen binders incorporating eggshell waste sourced from the food industry and examine their application in bitumen engineering. Employing a 60/70 penetration-grade asphalt binder as the research foundation, the optimal weight percentage of eggshell ash in the bitumen is determined, considering four levels (5%, 7%, 10%, and 12%) and two different heating temperatures (100°C and 200°C). Several tests are conducted to comprehensively evaluate the eggshell ash, including SEM-EDS and FTIR analyses, providing valuable technical insights into its properties. Additionally, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) measurements are employed to analyze the characteristics of the bitumen incorporating eggshell ash. The primary oxide group present in the eggshell ash is calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Notably, higher concentrations of eggshell ash enhance the resistance of bitumen binders to high temperatures, as indicated by the penetration index results. Furthermore, DSR testing reveals that the addition of eggshell ash significantly increases the rigidity of the bitumen binders, resulting in improved resistance to deformation. © 2023, The Authors. BaZr1-2xFe2xO3-δ (x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.08) samples were prepared by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method quickly and at low-temperature. Furthermore, we explored for the first time the effect of iron (Fe) in the barium zirconate (BZO) lattice on photocatalytic and piezocatalytic activity to degrade organic dye. Fe insertion reduced the band gap, altered the electronic structure and induced luminescence quenching. The catalytic activity of the samples was analyzed through the degradation of the rhodamine B (RhB) dye. The photocatalytic experiment was performed under UVC light and the piezocatalytic experiment under ultrasonic vibration. The pure sample of BZO showed better photocatalytic performance, while the insertion of Fe was unfavorable to degrade RhB. In contrast, pure BZO has negligible piezocatalytic activity, but a low Fe content is highly beneficial for promoting piezocatalysis. Based on the findings, this study provides important information for obtaining effective photocatalysts and piezocatalysts to be used in environmental remediation. © 2023, The Authors. In the present paper, the influence of the contact boundary condition and specimen geometry on the concrete compressive strength is numerically investigated by using a version of the Lattice Discrete Element Method (LDEM), implemented on Abaqus/Explicit. More precisely, two types of contact boundary conditions are considered and, for each of them, three different slenderness levels (height/width ratio - h/b) are analyzed (that is, h/b = 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) by considering a square cross-section. Moreover, for h/b = 2.0, a circular cross-section is also examined. Two models are developed: one by using the LDEM and the other by using a hybrid model, combining Finite Elements and LDEs. The results show that both the boundary conditions and the sample geometry influence the axial compressive strength.

One of the principal difficulties related to road safety management in Brazil is the lack of data on road projects, especially those on rural roads, which makes it difficult to use road safety studies and models from other countries as a reference. Updating road networks through the use of hyperspectral remote sensing images can be a good alternative. However, accurately recognizing and extracting hyperspectral images from roads has been recognized as a challenging task in the processing of hyperspectral data. In order to solve the aforementioned challenges, Hyperion hyperspectral images were combined with the Optimum Forest Path (OPF) algorithm for supervised classification of rural roads and the effectiveness of the OPF and SVM classifiers when applied to these areas was compared. Both classifiers produced reasonable results, however, the OPF algorithm outperformed SVM. The higher classification accuracy obtained by the OPF was mainly attributed to the ability to better distinguish between regions of exposed soil and unpaved roads.

Antimicrobial potential of wood vinegar from cocoa pod shells (Theobroma cacao L.) against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger

This research aims to determine the antimicrobial activity of wood vinegar from cocoa pod shells against Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The wood vinegar was prepared by pyrolyzing cocoa pod shells at temperatures ranging from 300 to 380 °C. After purifying by distillation, the wood vinegar at a concentration of 0.5% to 8% was then used for antibacterial testing. The Kirby–Bauer method was used to determine antibacterial activity. The efficacy of wood vinegar against microbe was observed by the inhibition zone diameter. The data analysis was carried out using SPSS statistical software ver. 22.0 for Windows (one-way ANOVA followed by Least Significant Difference test). The results showed that wood vinegar could inhibit the growth of two microbial pathogens, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The higher concentration of wood vinegar, the higher the microbial growth inhibition zone diameter. The antimicrobial tests showed that wood vinegar had diameter inhibitory zones ranging from 6 to 6.12 mm for Candida albicans, and 6–6.14 mm for Aspergillus niger. These results indicate that wood vinegar produced from cocoa pod shells possesses antimicrobial properties. © 2022

Traceability systems are a concern in the current food supply chain mainly due to food safety issues. Related traceability problem in the supply chain is the risk of changes in the information on coffee products presented on the consumer's side, thereby reducing their trust in information and customer loyalty on the product. This study aims to analyze the business process of the real-world situation in coffee commodity supply chains, generate a dataset from these observations, and to propose a traceability system design using the clustering approach. The methodology in this research consisted of field observation and desk study, multicollinearity analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis and formulation. The results show that the activities occurring in the coffee commodity supply chain take place between 4 stakeholders, which is indicated by UML. The generated dataset is then compared in correlation so that four variables are selected to use as references in designing the traceability system. Finally, the clustering method shows 4 clusters, where every 2 clusters in 2 existing varieties. The resulting cluster has been able to interpret as much as 84.83% of the dataset tested. © 2020 IEEE.

Performance indicators play a fundamental role in monitoring the effectiveness of actions that were established in accordance with the organization's strategic planning. There are several ways well-described approaches in the literature for identifying and selecting a set of performance indicators. However, at first, some organizations have limitations to implement a large number of indicators simultaneously due to resource constraints. In this sense, a process for supporting decision makers in selecting indicators is desired and so, the organization can prioritize the most important indicators to be monitored in a given time window to leverage its business strategy. In this research, the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) was used to identify key indicators and a decision support model is proposed based on FITradeoff to prioritize the indicators. This study developed a multicriteria decision making model based on both partial information and an interactive tradeoff elicitation process to support a freight transportation company in selecting a set of performance indicators.

The studies carried out in the area of cell preservation have been of significant importance in recent years. This process, known as cryopreservation, has been used for decades and aims to preserve various cellular materials at cryogenic temperatures. Different methods allow cryopreservation, where the best known are the slow freezing and vitrification processes. Regardless of the process, it is necessary to use cryoprotective agents (CPAs) in conjunction with the cells to avoid possible cell damage during cryopreservation. Regarding the methods, they differ in their cooling rates and the concentration of CPAs used. According to some studies, the method that has been most studied is that of vitrification, which seeks to increase the cooling rate, reaching values above 20,000 ∘ C/min. Evaporation by a thin film of liquid nitrogen is one of the methods of vitrification, which uses a microstructure with a finned or porous surface for evaporation, and in these conditions cooling rates of up to 150,000 ∘ C/min were found, which shows a significant advance and alternative for cell cryopreservation. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The Beekeeper Formation, a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic reservoir, has long been known as a proven gas reservoir in the northern Perth Basin, Australia. However, its characteristics, and spatio-temporal distribution are still not well understood. There are two main objectives of this study: (1) to identify the main cutting facies groups/subgroups, and electrofacies of the Beekeeper Formation;and (2) to understand spatio-temporal characteristics, and development of the Beekeeper Formation. Integrated multi analyses have been conducted to achieve these objectives including cutting, wireline logging, and XRF analyses. Fifteen types of cutting components, and nine electrofacies were identified forming the Beekeeper Formation. The Beekeeper Formation consists of nine facies sub-groups, and these are classified into carbonate-dominated facies group, siliciclastic-dominated facies group, and mixed carbonate-siliciclastic facies group. Furthermore, this formation can vertically be divided into three parts on the basis of the main facies groups: the lower, middle, and upper parts. The lower and upper parts consist predominantly of siliciclastic materials, while the middle part is dominated by carbonate materials. In the north of the study area, the Beekeeper Formation consists predominantly of siliciclastic materials with minor carbonate materials, whereas in the central to south it consists mainly of carbonate material with minor-moderate siliciclastic materials. Various processes have influenced the evolution of the Beekeeper Formation including influx of siliciclastic components, mixing of carbonate and siliciclastic materials, suitable environment for the growth of carbonate biotas, sea level fluctuation, and tectonic activities. It is expected that findings from this study will provide new insights into characteristics of mixed carbonate-siliciclastic reservoirs in general, and will have regional and global applicability. © 2025 The Authors

Assessing uncertainty in wind turbine electrical power production using Monte-Carlo simulation: A case study on Sidrap wind turbine, Sulawesi - Indonesia

As the number of populations worldwide, including Indonesia, increases annually, the need for electrical energy also increases. With fossil-based energy starting to decrease in some places, and the global need to achieve net zero-emission, renewable energy is gaining popularity as the source of electrical power generation, for example, wind energy. Electrical power generated from wind turbines is one of the popular choices in many countries; among them is the Sidrap wind turbine plant in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Electrical power generated by a wind turbine relies on the wind speed, which varies from time to time and season to season. Therefore, building wind turbines plant should not be based on a deterministic wind speed but should bring the wind speed uncertainty into account. Taking the Sidrap wind turbine plant in Sulawesi, Indonesia, as the case study, this work aims to predict the plant’s average power and uncertainty. This calculation is done by implementing the Monte-Carlo simulation to calculate the production uncertainty. The data used for simulation is public data set between 2004 and 2015, obtained from the EMD International website. The simulation result is then compared to the actual production in 2018 and 2019 for analysis. The result indicates that the product is still in the range estimated using the Monte Carlo simulation. This method can also estimate other electrical power potential and uncertainty in an area before a wind turbine plant is built, given enough data sets containing wind speed variation for years. It is expected that by correctly understanding the uncertainty in electrical power production, the decision-making process to build the plant can be accurately determined.
