The transport sector is pivotal in fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability. Extensive research has scrutinized various transportation modes individually, yet a holistic assessment encompassing all modes while considering CO2 emissions needs to be more conspicuously present. Our study employs Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the efficacy of transportation policies in South American nations in the context of United Nations-established sustainable development goals. Our overarching objective is to classify the sustainability status of South American countries' transport sectors and to establish benchmark models rooted in the six dimensions of sustainability. Methodologically, our analysis integrates operational transportation metrics, Gross Domestic Product per capita, Human Development Index, and CO2 emissions from transportation systems. Additionally, we draw comparative insights by juxtaposing South American countries against the G8 and BRICS nations. The rigorous application of DEA coupled with bootstrap validation fortifies the reliability of our findings. Our results bring to light these findings, positioning South American countries closer to their developed counterparts. Notably, the sustainable development models of Chile and Uruguay emerge as prominent exemplars. This study underscores the pressing demand for holistic and integrated development strategies to attain more sustainable outcomes across South American nations in a faster way. In conclusion, our research fills a conspicuous void in the extant literature by furnishing a comprehensive evaluation of transportation policy performance in South America. Based on a robust methodology, this empirical evidence offers valuable insights for policymakers striving to advance sustainable regional development.

The effect of reinforcement ratio of hibiscus skin with a resin coating on lightweight concrete beam under bending

The use of natural fibers as an alternative of reinforcement for the structure of light weight concrete beam is highly encouraging. The use of natural fiber was chosen because of its easy availability; easy to process, abundant in number, renewable, inexpensive, and relatively high tensile strength. Indeed, it is an environmentally friendly material. One of natural fiber is skin of hibiscus. Hence, the objective of this study is to investigate the effect of reinforcement ratio of hibiscus skin with a resin coating towards the flexural strength of light concrete beam. This study was conducted at Laboratory Structures and Materials, Mataram University. The dimensions of concrete beams were 15× 20× 150 cm and the variation of tensile reinforcement from hibiscus skin were 3, 6, and 8 with a diameter of 12 mm. In addition, the ratio of reinforcement was 0,014; 0,031; and 0,046. The yield strength of hibiscus skin with a resin coating in tension was 43,67 MPa. Furthermore, the largest ultimate load (Pu) for the ratio reinforcement of 0,014; 0,031; and 0,046 were 7,564 kN, 12,811 kN, and 14,19 kN respectively. Meanwhile, the ultimate moments (Mu) were 2,125 kNm, 3,125 kNm and 3,625 kNm for for the ratio reinforcement of 0,014; 0,031; and 0,046 respectively. Therefore, the greater the ratio of the reinforcement results the higher of the load resistance. Thus, the hibiscus reinforcement has the ability to increase the beam resistance against the flexural load.

In recent years much research has been going on in Fiber Metal Laminate by the researcher and engineers because of its attractive properties. Along with that lot of Finite Element, Analysis-based studies are also employed to overcome the experimental test difficulty and fabrication of material. This research paper gives a detailed approach to Finite Element Analysis for high-velocity impact tests. The 3/2 stack up sequence of Aluminium 2024 and Basalt fabric is as follows, with the epoxy resin as the binding polymer. The varying parameter for this study is the impact velocity and mass of the indenter. From this study, energy, total displacement, and force are observed as a result. A uniform trend is observed in energy distribution between the various velocity.

This research aims to recognize the pattern of pulmonary disease on x-ray radiography image using artificial neural network (ANN) method. The images, which were used such as images of healthy pulmonary, pulmonary tuberculosis, and pulmonary tumour. Pattern recognition was using an extraction feature of GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix) and back propagation method. Before being identified, the images were processed by median filter and adaptive histogram equalization. The GLCM features that used were homogeneity, energy, contrast, variance and correlation. The parameters were learning rate and hidden layer. Learning rate was 0.3 and hidden layer was 25. Back propagation training showed 100% accuracy, which all of 44 images were used had been successfully identified. From the result, the healthy pulmonary showed 60% accuracy, 83.3% for pulmonary tuberculosis and 100% for pulmonary tumor. Hence, the overall result showed 81.25% accuracy, which 13 of 16 images had been successfully identified. From these result, extraction feature of GLCM using back propagation method was capable to recognize the pattern of pulmonary disease. However, due to narrow range of the feature, this application may not be used optimally for comparing features in every category of images. Therefore, the further research is needed to determine the best features and parameters of training back propagation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

An edible film is a type of bioplastic packaging that can be used to package strawberries. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the packaging effect using nanobiocomposite edible film based on gelatin/nanocrystalline cellulose with the addition of antioxidants nanopropolis and storage temperature on the quality and shelf life of strawberries. The strawberries fruit were packed with edible film nanobiocomposite and stored at 5°C, 10°C, and 30°C. The parameters analyzed were water content, Vitamin C, hardness, total dissolved solids, pH, and shelf life. The results showed that the water content ranged from 23.95 to 65.89%w/b at the end of the storage period and was stable at 5°C and 10°C. Furthermore, hardness at the end of storage ranged from 0.265 to 0.431 kg/cm2 and all treatments experienced a decrease in Vitamin C content during storage. The total dissolved solids content at the end of storage was 5.92-12%Brix, with a shelf life ranging from 3-21 days of storage, as determined by all treatment parameters. These results showed that bionanocomposite edible film packaging can increase the shelf life of strawberries. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The world population is expected to increase to 9.8 billion by 2050, increasing food demand. Fertilizer is one of the key factors that can increase food production in the world. This article aims to investigate the flow of fertilizers among country origin, main ports of entry in Brazil, and international suppliers. For this purpose, data were collected from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, and we analyzed these data using the Ucinet 6.0 ® and Netdraw ® software. This paper proposes two three-phase five-level power conversion systems. They can be employed in a wind energy converter system (WECS) application as the machine side rectifier, connected to the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) by an open-end winding (OEW) arrangement. Compared to the conventional topology, proposed ones lack the use of six clamping diodes in their structures. Even though, they also achieve the same power quality as the conventional one. Besides, proposed configurations may have fewer semiconductor devices in the current path, providing slightly lower power losses. Furthermore, the control system used ensures the synchronization between voltage and current, providing a high power factor operation. The converter equations, pulse-width modulation technique, and control strategy are detailed. Simulation and experimental results are provided in order to confirm their performance and feasibility.

A novel approach to CO2 utilization as a density agent in formulating palm shells and kernels separation fluid

Reducing CO2 emissions from Palm Oil Mills (POMs) production activities contribute positively to global warming. This paper proposes a novel approach to CO2 utilization as a density agent in formulating palm shells and kernel separation fluid based on density difference. This work applied a chemical absorption method to ensure permanent CO2 absorption in the solution. Natrium hydroxide (NaOH) was selected as a chemical absorbent with a mass fraction varied from 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5% w/w. The formulated fluid was then tested for its performance in separating palm shells and kernels, represented by separation efficiency. It was conducted by g 15 % w/w of a mixture of palm shells and kernels into the formulated fluid. The results showed that the maximum separation efficiency ranged from 97.38 and 100%. It corresponds to optimum separation fluid densities ranging between 1.13 to 1.15 at NaOH 10 and 12.5% w/w, respectively. The finding of this experiment indicated that the CO2 utilization as a density agent was successfully performed in the separation fluid formulation. In conclusion, the formulated fluid was acceptable in separating palm shells and kernels and, simultaneously, became an alternative for reducing CO2 emissions in POMs.

This study aimed to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from the bagasse of umbu-cajá (Spondias bahiensis), a native Brazilian fruit, and to assess their bioaccessibility. Additionally, the influence of different concentrations of the umbu-cajá bagasse (SBB) extract on the oxidative stability of pre-cooked goat meatballs was investigated over a 10-day refrigerated storage period by quantifying lipid oxidation products. A central composite rotational design determined the optimal ethanol concentration, sonication time, and bagasse-solvent ratio. The optimized extract was applied to meatballs at two concentrations: EX2 (meatballs with 7.0 g/100 g of added SBB extract) and EX4 (meatballs with 13.7 g/100 g of added SBB extract). A control treatment (no antioxidant) and BHT-treated meatballs (0.02 g/100 g) were included as references. Meatballs were evaluated by measuring instrumental color, peroxide value, TBARS, carbonyl compounds, and through simulated digestion. Optimal extraction conditions were 55 % ethanol, 20 min of sonication, and a 1:36.8 bagasse-to-solvent ratio (m/v). The extract showed high antioxidant activity and bioaccessibility of catechin (1243.75 %), epicatechin gallate (918.75 %), procyanidins B2 (915.38 %), gallic acid (319.76 %) and procyanidins B1 (136.36 %). SBB extract slowed lipid oxidation until day 10 and protein oxidation until day 5 but did not inhibit color change. The meatballs had low content of oxidative compounds and high antioxidant capacity in the intestinal fraction, indicating that SBB extract can partially or totally replace the synthetic preservative. © 2025

This paper is centred on the structural response of double skin composite columns made of two concentric tubes of stainless and carbon steels filled with concrete. These structural solutions can be used in new structures or even in cases where a reinforcement or retrofit is required to enhance their corrosion resistances or structural capacities. An experimental programme was conducted to investigate this innovative structural system by means of comparisons to standard concrete encased tubular steel stub columns. The experimental results widened their applications to cases where a high reserve of post-collapse resistance is required like in seismic design. An assessment of the Eurocode 4 predictions for these tubular columns indicated the design prediction formulae are too conservative, partly explained by the lack of consistent numerical and experimental results that could enable a better design calibration.
