The study assessed the physicochemical and biological properties of selected groundwater sources in the Southeastern part of the Western Region, to assess the impact on water quality and health risk. The Piper Trilinear plot was used to categorize the water samples into water types based on the dominant anion and cation concentrations. Statistical analysis (One way ANOVA and two sample t-test) was used to determine the sources of variation in the data at 95% confidence interval. The Water Quality Index (WQI) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) were used to estimate the water quality and health risk respectively. TDS and turbidity were above the acceptable WHO guidelines in 16.7% of the samples with a mildly acidic pH in 83.3% of the water samples. Also, 91.7% of the water samples were contaminated with total coliform (TC) and 25% with e-coli. Generally, the groundwater samples were dominated by Ca 2+ and HCO 3- ion water types. The variations between parameters were found not significant for all the parameters (p>0.05). Water samples in the North are of good quality with a mean WQI of 96, but of poor quality in the South with a mean WQI of 144.6. HQ values for all the samples were less than 0.1, suggesting less harmful impacts of the heavy metal concentrations on human health. Overall, the results showed the presence of heavy metals in the groundwater sources sampled, however in quantities with low health risks either through oral or dermal channels. Groundwater within the communities is good for domestic purposes but needs treatment for drinking. To improve upon the study, it is recommended that further studies consider a higher number of samples and include other accessible groundwater stations where possible.

Investigation of combustion temperature through experiments with a wide range of fuels, both solid and liquid, is continuously being conducted by scientists around the world, while the measurement of heat transfer rate can be analyzed when the combustion process occurs. Previous research has generally been conducted using liquefied gas, fossil fuels, and alcohol additives. Specifically, the research in this work investigated the convection heat rate and combustion temperature through the modification of the perforated plate. The experiment was conducted in the fluidized-bed combustor (FBC) fuel chamber using solid waste fuel of oil palm biomass. Measurements were performed at four different points using the HotTemp HT-306 Digital Thermometer. The results of the experiment showed that the convection heat rate in measurement one (M-I) reached 8.258 W/m2 for palm kernel shell (PKS) fuel. Meanwhile, in measurement two (M-II), the convection rate of 7.392 W/m2 was produced by oil palm midrib (OPM) fuel. The highest combustion temperature was recorded with OPM fuel (884°C) at M-I. However, the combustion temperature of the PKS combustion process is higher at 896°C but shows a less good trend than OPM. Overall, the measurement results of the three types of fuel used to modify the perforated plate applied in the FBC fuel chamber are excellent. In this paper, dual Vienna rectifiers are proposed for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) applications with Open-End Winding (OEW) Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). Due to the reduced number of controlled switches, the proposed topologies have reduced costs and high reliability. Besides, they provide a better power quality using the same number of controlled switches than conventional structures presented in the literature, making them very attractive options for industry applications. The system model, space vector modulation, and control strategy are given. Simulation results are provided in order to validate their performance and feasibility.

Soil physical quality (SPQ) is related to its conservation and degradation status. Among the indicators of SPQ, the S-index stands out, which is sensitive to different land uses and management practices adopted and capable of identifying structural changes with reference value ranges related to SPQ. These ranges are not suitable for various edaphoclimatic conditions, including the Santa Rita watershed (SRW), municipality of Pelotas, in southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The S-index is an excellent indicator and allows the mapping of physical vulnerability when considering the spatial uncertainties of the attribute. The general objective of this study is to evaluate whether the proposed S-index reference values by Dexter (2004) are suitable for soil boundary conditions, to define new critical S-index limits based on macroporosity, as well as to characterize the spatial distribution of the S-index and map critical zones of SPQ in the SRW. It was possible to identify a limiting S-index value of 0.039 for the edaphoclimatic conditions of the SRW. Through geostatistical techniques, it was possible to map physical vulnerability from the critical soil limit, thus identifying areas that require remediation. The limiting value proposed by Dexter was able to represent the spatial pattern of physical vulnerability in the SRW. The S-index proved to be an excellent tool for supporting decisions regarding the use, management, and conservation of soil physical quality and the environment. © 2023, The Authors. Treatments based on Virtual Reality have been successfully used in motor rehabilitation of issues such as Spinal Cord Injury and Stroke. Highly immersive Virtual environments combined with biofeedback can be utilized to train functional activities on patients with these motor disabilities. This work details the development of a portable Virtual Reality environment to train upper limbs activities on Spinal Cord Injury subjects. The Virtual Reality environment depicts a personalized physiotherapy room where the user trains elbow and shoulder by reaching 5 spots on table. Also the user have a biofeedback of both hands’ position. Finally this system will be integrated a pilot biomechanical analysis using The Motion Monitor system to compare a group of patients before and after a 6 week intervention with Virtual Reality. Hydrophobic membranes have limitations, which are the low permeation rate and susceptible to fouling, therefore membrane modifications are generally required. In this paper, hydrophobic polymer membrane modification has been studied by mixing dragon's blood resin (DBR) as bio additive. Two types of polymers were used, they were polyethersulfon (M-3 PES) and polyvinylidene Two types of polymers were used, they were polyethersulfon (M-3 PES) and polyvinylidene fluoride (M-3 PVDF) with a concentration of 14.5% polymer and 3% DBR. The results showed that M-3 PES had greater porosity, water uptake, pore size, and clean water flux than M3-PVDF. However, the antifouling performance of M-3 PVDF membrane tends to be better than M-3 PES, as well as its rejection. Both membranes tend to be stable even after repeated use.

Growing population, rapid urbanization, and increasing travel demand emphasize the need for reliable public transportation systems and sustainable transportation planning. A reliable bus service fosters a more significant, satisfied, and committed base of users. This research focuses on examining the association between on-time performance (OTP) and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics to identify relevant external factors for proactive and reliable public transportation system planning. The analysis was conducted at a bus stop level. Bus arrival/departure data from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) was obtained. The road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics were captured within 0.25-mile and 0.50-mile buffers. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to understand the association between OTP and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics by day of the week and time of the day. The results show that OTP is associated with external factors such as the number of signalized or cul-de-sac/dead-end intersections, number of lanes, network density, population, income (median and total), and land use types related to residential and commercial/employment purposes within the bus stop vicinity. The findings provide vital insights for transit agencies to enhance scheduling, service and maximize benefits, effectively utilize available resources, plan, and provide equitable services to all riders. © 2023 The Author(s)

Parkia speciosa seeds, a widely consumed plant in Southeast Asia, are known for their rich bioactive compounds with potential health benefits. This study investigates the antioxidant properties of ethanol extracts from P. speciosa leaves (PSL) and seeds (PSS) to combat oxidative stress. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, revealing that PSL exhibited higher antioxidant potential than PSS, with values of 14.34 ± 0.02 and 19.39 ± 0.04 μg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g extract, respectively. The ethanol extracts of PSL and PSS significantly protected HT22 cells from erastin-induced ferroptotic cell death and activated the antioxidant response element (ARE) pathway, enhancing endogenous antioxidant defense mechanisms. Furthermore, in silico molecular docking analysis identified 7,7′-Dihydroxy-5′‑methoxy-2′,2′-dimethyl-4-oxo-3′,4′-dihydro-2′H,4H-3,6′-bichromen-5-yl hexopyranosiduronic acid as a promising bioactive compound with strong binding affinities to oxidative stress-related receptors (5i6x, 6cm4, 2f8a, 8bxn, and 8ivr). These findings suggest that P. speciosa ethanol extract, particularly from its leaves, exhibits strong antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, supporting its potential application as a natural therapeutic agent for oxidative stress-related disorders.

Industry 4.0 has drawn the attention of researchers around the world for its potential ability to increase competitiveness of the companies that can use it. Although much research has emphasized the technological aspect, little attention has been paid to the challenges and opportunities that the companies which intend to implement it expect to face. Based on secondary data this paper involved a research made with 135 companies in Ireland, 246 in Brazil and 305 in Argentina, to study the expected benefits and internal and external barriers that these 686 have in relation to the implementation of Industry 4.0. The practical implication and originality of this study is to present common points and some differences that these companies have, so researchers can guide their studies to try to overcome the main barriers, improving potential opportunities and helping to link research with practice more effectively. © 2019, Computers and Industrial engineering. IntroductionMental maturity is a state of preparation for physical, mental and social aspects of life.1 Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have low mental maturity and deficits with regards to social interactions, language,1 motor skills and postural control.2 postural control is achieved by the integration of three systems: visual, vestibular and somatosensorial.3 postural perturbation increases the risk of falls and can exert a negative impact on the development of communication skills and social interactions.4 Children with autism are more susceptible due to deficits related to visual and somatosensorial feedback.5 Research questionDo deprivation of the visual system and somatosensorial perturbation alter postural control variables in a child with autism compared to a child with neurotypical development? MethodsThis case report involved two male children aged seven years and four months – one with a diagnosis of ASD (22 kg, 132 cm) and another with neurotypical development (26.4 kg, 129 cm). The psychological evaluation (general reasoning capacity) was performed using the Columbia Mental Maturity Scale (CMMS-3). The motor assessment was performed using the SMART-D 140® system (BTS engineering), which has two force plates (Kistler Platform, model 9286BA). postural control was investigated under the following conditions: eyes open, eyes closed, without a mat and with a 5-cm foam rubber mat. ResultsTable 1 lists the results of the CMMS-3 and force plate variables. The child with ASD had average reasoning capacity. Both children exhibited oscillations in postural control, but the child with autism had poorer results in the occurrence of visual deprivation and somatosensorial perturbation.
