In this paper, an experimental and numerical study were developed to evaluate the behavior of stainless steel bolted connections subjected to shear load until rupture, in which austenitic stainless steel 304 was used. In order to determine the material behavior, tensile coupon tests were performed. The numerical model was developed in Abaqus finite element program using dynamic explicit analysis and solid elements (C3D8) with an elastic-plastic stress-strain curve with strain hardening and damage criteria. Additionally, a comparison of the results with the recommendations given by the current standards for stainless steel structures was also accomplished. © 2020 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. In this work, a family of multilevel single-phase converters is proposed. This family is based on cascaded cells, each composed by K two level legs connected to the primary windings of K - 1 transformers, while their secondary windings are cascaded to generate a multilevel voltage. Two kinds of cells are considered: the shared leg (SL), in which one leg is connected to all transformers, and the multiple shared legs (MSL), which has various legs each shared between two transformers. The turns ratios of th transformers can be calculated in order to give each pole voltage a different voltage gain in the secondary side. This causes the legs and transformers to be asymmetrical, increasing the levels-per-switch generated. The generalized model, turns ratio calculation and PWM design are provided for proposed converters composed by M SL or MSL cells. By means of simulation and experimental results, two topologies within proposed family are analyzed, one composed by one SL cell, and the other by one MSL cell, both with four legs. They are compared to the conventional cascaded h-bridge (CHB) with two bridges and corresponding isolation transformers. Various cases of asymmetry are considered, and results are analyzed to show that the configurations within the proposed family can provide better performance than the CHB in terms of switching stress and harmonic distortion.

Reconstruction of severe osteochondral defects in articular cartilage and subchondral trabecular bone remains a challenging problem. The well-integrated bilayer osteochondral graft design expects to be guided the chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation for stem cells and provides a promising solution for osteochondral tissue repair in this study. The subchondral bone scaffold approach is based on the developed finer and denser 3D β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) bioceramic scaffold process, which is made using a digital light processing (DLP) technology and the novel photocurable negative thermo-responsive (NTR) bioceramic slurry. Then, the concave-top disc sintered 3D-printed bioceramic incorporates the human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) laden photo-cured hybrid biohydrogel (HG + 0.5AFnSi) comprised of hyaluronic acid methacryloyl (HAMA), gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), and 0.5% (w/v) acrylate-functionalized nano-silica (AFnSi) crosslinker. The 3D β-TCP bioceramic compartment is used to provide essential mechanical support for cartilage regeneration in the long term and slow biodegradation. However, the apparent density and compressive strength of the 3D β-TCP bioceramics can be obtained for ~ 94.8% theoretical density and 11.38 ± 1.72 MPa, respectively. In addition, the in vivo results demonstrated that the hADSC + HG + 0.5AFnSi/3D β-TCP of the bilayer osteochondral graft showed a much better osteochondral defect repair outcome in a rabbit model. The other word, the subchondral bone scaffold of 3D β-TCP bioceramic could accelerate the bone formation and integration with the adjacent host cancellous tissue at 12 weeks after surgery. And then, a thicker cartilage layer with a smooth surface and uniformly aligned chondrocytes were observed by providing enough steady mechanical support of the 3D β-TCP bioceramic scaffold. © 2023, The Author(s).

Multi absorber made from rice husk and CaCl2-KMnO4 in absorbing water vapor and ethylene

The excessive ethylene gas and water vapor are not desired particularly in the fruit post-harvest handling, since the substances can shorten the shelf life and accelerate the rooting of the fruits thus its presence in the fruit handing is needed to be control. In this research, a multi absorber has been manufactured from calcium chloride (CaCl2) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) with active rice husk as a matrix. The purpose of this study is to observe the capability of multi absorber of CaCl2 and KMnO4 trapped into rice hush matrix in absorbing water vapor and ethylene. In this study, CaCl2 and KMnO4 solutions with mol ratio of 1 : 2; 2 : 1; 1 : 3 and control (with CaCl2(1 mol) or KMnO4(1 mol)) were impregnated into the matrix. The experiment resulted that the ratio of CaCl2 (1 mol): KMnO4 (3mol) was able to absorb KMnO4 as much as 0.89 mg ethylene per 3 g absorber for 1 h of exposure. It also worked for absorbing water vapor as much as 1.03 g/g absorber for 7 days of storage at RH97%. Based on this experiment, the multi absorber resulted from this research is potential to be applied as ethylene and water vapor absorber.

This paper deals with the generalized integral transform solution procedure to the unsteady magneto-convection problem of an electrically conducting Newtonian fluid within a parallel-plate channel, in which Hall and ion-slip effects are taken into account. It is considered that the magnetic Reynolds number is small, i.e., the flow-induced magnetic fields are not strong enough to modify the applied transversal magnetic field. To cover a broader range of problems, temperature-dependent transport properties, time-dependent pressure gradient, inflow perpendicular to the plates (porous plates), and Couette flow are also considered in the mathematical formulation. Results are illustrated and compared to the main numerical results from the literature for the related velocity and temperature potentials as function of the main governing parameters, namely, Hartmann, suction/injection, transport properties, and electron and ion-slip parameters. In order to illustrate the consistency of the Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT) and its use for benchmarking purposes in the magneto fluid dynamics area, convergence analyses are carried out for the main potentials. © 2018 by Begell House, Inc.

Structural elements made of seam-welded hollow sections are considerably less expensive than their seamless equivalents. This is a strong incentive for their use, but the current steel design standards still contain recommendations for seam-welded hollow sections based on test results performed with sections produced using outdated steel grades and fabrication processes. These design procedures are even more conservative when applied to composite tubular seam-welded elements. This paper presents an experimental campaign performed to investigate the structural behaviour of steel- and concrete-filled composite columns made with seam-welded rectangular hollow profiles. The experiments involved columns with only steel sections, concrete-filled and concrete-filled plus additional reinforcing bars. The main aim of the tests was to identify the contribution of each component in the overall structural response. The results enable an evaluation of the design recommendations present in Eurocode 4 aiming to determine less conservative buckling curves to be used for the investigated composite columns made of seam-welded rectangular hollow sections.

Detection of gas concentrations based on age on Staphylococcus aureus biofilms with gas array sensors

Bacteria that have developed in the biofilm phase will be more resistant to antibiotics and emit gases that have certain characteristics. One dose of culture from Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) (Merck, Germany) was inoculated into 10 mL of Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) (Merck, Germany) and homogenized for a concentration of 0.5 McFarland (10-13 CFU / mL). The suspension was detected by ELISA reader (λ 595nm)Based on the results that have been obtained, the sensor on the gas array instrument can detect both a variety of distinctive gas patterns in S. Variations in shelf life and variations in the types of samples provided can be tracked both by the entire sensor. This is indicated by the emergence of a unique and different sensor voltage output pattern in each variation. The processing of sensor output using the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) method can accommodate 86.45% of the data variation, including the first component and the second component respectively 70.4% and 18.1%. Through the PCA method, each variation of bacterial treatment can be classified properly, so it can be used to clearly distinguish the age of bacteria and biofilm age. When loading the PCA plot, the MQ2 sensor shows the most responsive results to gas changes. Meanwhile, the MQ136 sensor ranks second as the most responsive sensor to measure the life span of bacteria and biofilms.

The experiment of activity and stability of antioxidant extracted from Senduduk (Melastoma malabathricum L) leaves at various conditions of concentration, pH values, and temperatures

Melastoma Malabathricum L. (Senduduk) is a type of weed that serves as an antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-hepatoxic, anti-diabetic and antiseptic to kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms. The purpose of this study is to obtain antioxidant extracts from Senduduk leaves and to test its antioxidants stability in various temperatures and pH. Senduduk leaves are extracted by macerating them with 95% ethanol solvent for 72 hours, and then the solvent is evaporated using a vacuum evaporator at 40 °C. In this experiment, DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-pikrihidazil 1,1-diphenyl-2-pikrihidazil) method is used to test the antioxidant activity. Based on this experiment, the extract yield produced from Senduduk leaves was 10.40% (w/w). The results show that the extracts experience an ability to inhibit DPPH free radical formation by 91.734% at 100 ppm concentration. It is known that the antioxidant from the extract of Senduduk leaves is stable at pH 3-5 and at temperature of 70 °C. The IC50 (Inhibition Concentration) value is 55.432 ppm, which proves that the antioxidant properties of the leaves extracts can be classified as strong antioxidant.

Effect of temperature on water vapor sorption on commercial desiccant and rice husk-CaCl2 composite desiccant

Many efforts have been made to control the moisture in the package by the addition of the active ingredients which absorb this moisture. In the modern retail, moisture or water vapor absorber, known as desiccant has been widely used to extend the shelf life of the food product. Composite desiccants comprising the high active ingredient has been developed to improve the performance of single absorber material in absorbing and controlling moisture in the food package. The purpose of this research was to observe the effect of temperature storage in moisture sorption of commercial desiccants (silica gel and active clay) comparing to the composite desiccant of rice husk-CaCl2. This research proved that the sorption ability of these desiccants were different, and it was influenced by the temperature of the storage. The results showed that rice husk-CaCl2 composite dessicant possessed the highest absorption capacity especially at temperature of 40 °C with value of 1.2342 g H2O/g desiccant for 7 days of storage. The increase of temperature has been resulted on increasing absorption rate (k), for example, rice husk-CaCl2 composite dessicant, the k value was 0.2587 g H2O/g desiccant/day at 30 °C, 0.7828 g H2O/g desiccant/day at 40 °C and 0.9562 g H2O/g desiccant/day at 50 °C. It looks that the moisture absorption followed pseudo second order for all treatment with R2 at 99% for almost all treatments.
