Sustainable business models as an innovation strategy in the water sector: An empirical investigation of a sustainable product-service system

The complexity of the challenges in the water sector means that innovative solutions are required. These solutions include not only new sustainable technologies for water treatment, but also complementary innovation in business models to support the adoption of these technologies in urban areas. This paper aims to explore the role of sustainable business models in supporting technological innovations such as decentralized approaches for water quality and quantity improvements in urban areas. The private sector involvement can be valuable in overcoming the barriers and challenges to implementation of those approaches as well as to achieve the sustainability. A case study of the product-service system as a sustainable business model in an emerging economy was conducted to deliver insights into the role of new ways of value proposition, value creation, and value capture in supporting innovative technologies in the water sector and in contributing to sustainability. The results demonstrated that consumers' acceptance, risk perception, and confidence in decentralized approaches can be improved with the support of business models through a close integration with customers. The close integration among the actors can also lead to better management of the system. Further research can focus on how different types of sustainable business models could contribute to supporting water technologies in urban areas and increase social acceptability. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

The inventory control systems has an important role to monitor the condition of the goods at the supply chain stage of goods distribution from the central warehouse to retail in accordance with consumer demand. The research aims to develop inventory control systems on the supply chain distribution of goods from suppliers to retail through the central warehouse with minimal supply chain costs. Minimization of supply chain cost using martingale model of forecast evaluation, and the result as the basis for calculation of safety stock and reorder point. The results of research are the system that can be used to control inventory and renewal of goods in the central warehouse by calculating the minimization of supply chain cost based on consumer demand. Case studies were conducted on the supply chain distribution of goods from the central warehouse to the retail in Semarang. The observation data derived from the goods distribution from central warehouse to retail for certain products over 4 time periods. Through such inventory control system, can minimize supply chain cost, and product inventory level can be maintained in time and amount of inventory that must be fulfilled. © 2018 IEEE.

Cavitation and corrosion on hydrodynamic components and systems reduces the operational efficiency. The use of wear resistant coatings have been studied as a solution to the problem of corrosion and cavitation in the industrial environment. Thermal spray processes are recognized as excellent technique to deposit coatings. The high velocity oxy-fuel process (HVOF) can produce high density and bond strength coatings. High velocity air-fuel process (HVAF) is an alternative process, shown to be superior regarding corrosion protection and production costs. HVAF can deposit coating with shorter dwell time and lower temperature, producing coating with lower oxide content This paper presents the use of HVOF and HVAF process to deposit FeCrMnSiNi and FeCrMnSiB coatings, studying the resistance against corrosion and cavitation in comparison to 316L HVOF coating. Microstructure was analyzed by XRD, microscopic means and mechanical testing. Cavitation and corrosion behavior of the coatings were also studied comparatively. HVAF coatings presented lower porosity and oxide levels, as well as higher hardness values, compared with the coatings deposited by HVOF process. The HVAF process presented better cavitation resistance than HVOF coatings. The FeCrMnSiNi HVAF coating had the best corrosion protection performance between the developed alloys. © Copyright 2017 by DVS Media GmbH. All rights reserved.

Public health problem is associated to eating habits, such as higher consumption of fast food and popular snakes. Excessive consumption of these foods can cause health problems such as obesity due to its high energy densities. These foods have become commonplace in world culture for their low price and the easy-to-eat foods mass production. It is known that fruits are essential in balanced diets and an important part of the nutrition strategies programs by contribute to a healthy life. Some works has shown a consumer's global trend demand for product and the life quality and between fresh food and healthy. The Brazil are the third in the word in fruit supply chain and one of the biggest problems facing is fruit loss. It is estimated that mean of fruits losses occurs in households. The present study aimed to determine Brazilian preference towards fruit and the Brazilian consumer behavior influence which might contribute to losses during consumption stage. We explored the literature and created a survey with 275 participants, 46% of men and 53% of women, to identify the perception of Brazilian consumers that may contribute to fruit loss. The results shown the consumer preferences in buying mature fruits is associated with habits and can contribute to food losses and waste, because according best practice to fruit preservation is recommended that the majority types of mellow fruits should be stored in refrigerator and some of them should be consume as soon as possible. © ILS 2018 - Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, Proceedings. The high level of erosion that occur in Musi river basin has improved a tremendous impact on sedimentation in downstream areas and has resulted in many infrastructure of water is disturbed, such as silting of irrigation channels, siltation of rivers which disrupt the flow of transport stream and increasing the risk of flooding, high sedimentation in the port basin, low quality of water and the rising costs of water treatment. This study utilizes techniques terrain models Digital (Digital Elevation Model/DEM) to analysis the spatial distribution of the potential for erosion and sources of sedimentation, as well as the direction of the flow of sediment into channels as well as its relationship with outlet in branching river as the supplies to be sediment to the river flow. The method used in this study using a spatial model analysis with the help of GIS in analysing and presenting the level of erosion and deposition by utilizing modelling slope and kinetic energy of rainfall to estimate the index erosivity and distribution pattern of sediment into the river channel. This research was conducted at the upper Lematang river sub basin with area 412,638 Ha, which are classified into 11 sub-chatments with the highest altitude is 3.159 m above sea level (Dempo Valley) and the lowest is 126 m above sea level (Talang tinggi Valley). Analytical results have been tested by taking a fine sediment sampling in each sub-watershed in the analysis and is taken along the channel network and compare the observed patterns with the results predicted by the model analysis of soil erosion. Overall, erosion by high intensity tends to occur in the relationship between the different vegetation coverage, the barren land and open land used for farms and land used for mining. Approximately 45-65.5% slope bad condition because the vegetation has been open, so it can be seen the amount of erosion in the area is 2.139 ton/ha/year, at the sloping is 1.8239 ton / ha / year

Food Losses and wastes can become a major social and economic problem if not managed properly. Over the last decades, some research has focused on the waste and loss of fruits and vegetables due to the population growth, which makes essential to find out ways to reduce these wastes and losses. However, few studies dealt with the amount of fruit and vegetables that are wasted by consumers. The purpose of this study is to identify the main causes that affect the generation of wastes in household's consumer behavior. A structured survey was applied to 275 Brazilian consumers, where 53% were female and 47% male, restricted a region of Brazil to identify these causes. The results show that a high education level does not imply a low food waste. Moreover, it indicates that, despite the low volume waste by family, the sum of these wastes represents a huge volume affecting logistics and supply chain management, waste disposal areas and environmental pollution. © ILS 2018 - Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, Proceedings. Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus linked to multiple birth defects including microcephaly, known as congenital ZIKV syndrome. The identification of host factors involved in ZIKV replication may guide efficacious therapeutic interventions. In genome-wide transcriptional studies, we found that ZIKV infection triggers aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) activation. Specifically, ZIKV infection induces kynurenine (Kyn) production, which activates AHR, limiting the production of type I interferons (IFN-I) involved in antiviral immunity. Moreover, ZIKV-triggered AHR activation suppresses intrinsic immunity driven by the promyelocytic leukemia (PML) protein, which limits ZIKV replication. AHR inhibition suppressed the replication of multiple ZIKV strains in vitro and also suppressed replication of the related flavivirus dengue. Finally, AHR inhibition with a nanoparticle-delivered AHR antagonist or an inhibitor developed for human use limited ZIKV replication and ameliorated newborn microcephaly in a murine model. In summary, we identified AHR as a host factor for ZIKV replication and PML protein as a driver of anti-ZIKV intrinsic immunity.

“Sng” is a Taiwanese term describing a distinct state of soreness. Accumulating evidence indicates that sng is a specific somatosensory modality, independent of pain, with distinct receptors and transduction pathways. In recent years, variations in its presentation across different medical specialties have highlighted the need for a standardized definition of sng-related terminology. To address this, the Taiwan Sng Society established a multidisciplinary Sng Taxonomy Task Force, comprising 32 experts in both clinical and basic sciences related to sng. Here we summarize the discussions and expert consensus from the Task Force. A total of 16 sng-related terminology was defined. The first edition of sng terminology aims to establish a clear, standardized framework for the clinical practice and research of sng. © 2025 Formosan Medical Association

The Porosity and Hardness of Fe-18Al Alloy Added ZrO2 Nanoparticles

The additive effect of ZrO2 nanoparticles in Fe-18Al based alloys through the mechanical alloying process to the porosity and hardness was investigated. Results of microstructure observations showed that the only intermetallic Fe3Al present as the major phase in the samples along with other phases which are very minor together with the presence of porosity that indicated by objects of dark color. The porosity tends to diminish with the addition of ZrO2 nanoparticles. However, the porosity is still visible on the Fe-Al alloy with the addition of 2% additive and the higher compaction load especially in the surface area. The results of phase study by XRD confirmed the presence of the intermetallic Fe3Al. It is shown that ZrO2 nanoparticles are dispersed in the metal matrix. The presence of ZrO2 also confirmed by SEMEDS. The fraction of pores that estimated based on the microstructure observation showed a decrease with an increase in volume fraction of ZrO2 nanoparticles and the compaction load. The study concluded that the hardness of Fe-18Al alloys increased with a decrease in porosity which achieved in Fe-18Al alloy added with 2% ZrO2 nanoparticles. The lowest porosity level is 0.17% and the highest hardness value is 352.59 HV

Currently the computational modelling tools, expert algorithms for image segmentation and three-dimensional printing devices have improved the process of manufacture of customized pieces in the context of automation of prosthesis modelling. Among several strategies to obtain the correct shape of a missing bone part, we explore a modelling method based on geometric features defined by Bezier cubic curves. The data is obtained from sets of slices of tomographic scans as a reference. From the images, we know about data from the edges in the image but we do not have any information about a missing area in a specific bone region. Thus, the objective is to search patterns for features whose values are known from similar tomographic image which matches to fill a hole in a bone. Due the free form of a bone there are a lot of parameters to be evaluated. Thus, a Data Mining approach is applied for classification and to discover the best features as shape descriptors. In this way, the prosthesis manufacture can be automated in all stages among image scanning and printing. © 2017 DEStech Publications. All rights reserved.
