A compact electromagnetic multi-resonator is presented in this paper using a new technique for chipless RFID tag data encoding. Employing Archimedean spirals, the information is applied into the spectral signature shifting resonant frequencies in several positions. The multi-resonator tag proposed operates in microwave band (between 3.0-7.0GHz) and has a coding data capacity of up to 100 decimal numbers for two resonant frequencies. The simulated and measured results show a good concordance and a great perspective to use in low-cost RFID chipless tag applications. © 2015 IEEE.

The recovery of protein from CLW through alkaline, acid or enzymatic hydrolysis has been employed as an alternative for reuse of chromed leather wastes (CLW). Even though this recovery process is well known, nobler uses for the material produced still have to be studied. In this paper, gelatin was extracted from CLW through alkaline hydrolysis. A proportion of 100 g of CLW per 500 ml of water per 4 g of MgO was kept for 6 h at 70°C and 180 rpm of agitation speed. It resulted in a gelatin with 2.2 g.L-1 of TKN and chromium content lower than 0.04 mg.L-1. This gelatin was later mixed with corn starch and glycerol or sorbitol to produce polymeric films through casting technique. Thickness, solubility in water, elongation at break and tensile strength of the films were determined. Gelatin-starch-sorbitol films presented better mechanical properties when compared to gelatin-starch-glycerol films. Solubility in water of gelatin-starch-sorbitol films ranged from 35.9 to 36.6%. In addition, their elongation at break and tensile strength ranged from, respectively, 115.1 to 116.4% and from 6.6 to 6.9 MPa. It characterizes them as proper, in terms of mechanical properties, for use as mulches in agriculture. Therefore, film production may be a feasible application for gelatin extracted from CLW.

This paper proposes ten alternative drive topologies with reduced number of controlled switches. The topologies are composed by three-level (3L) and two-level (2L) legs combinations. All of them aim to feed a three-phase machine based on the concept of open-end-winding (OEW). Conventional OEW configurations are considered for comparison purposes. The proposed topologies are named accordingly to the number of levels associated in each leg. For example, a topology with one 3L leg and five 2L legs is named 322-222. The other configurations are named in a similar manner. The OEW based systems using proposed configurations aim to give intermediate alternative solution in terms of cost-benefit rather than using conventional configurations. Some simulation and experimental results are presented in order to validate the theoretical approaches.

Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Capacity of Brazilian Apples

Apple consumption is related to the prevention of chronic diseases due to the presence of phenolic acids and flavonoids that have antioxidant capacity. However, phenolic profile and antioxidant capacity can vary between varieties. The aim of this study was to analyze the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (AC) of thirty-six apple varieties to establish a classification of these fruits. The TPC was analyzed according to the Folin-Ciocalteau method and AC was analyzed using the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used for the classification of the fruit. The TPC ranged from 456 to 1583 mg/kg of fresh fruit (catechin equivalents) and the AC ranged from 5606 to 23,719 mmol/kg (fresh fruit). The Pearson linear correlation showed significant differences in the association between TPC and AC (r: 0.79, p < 0.001). The apples were classified into the following five groups according to their AC: very high (8%), high (17%), medium (47%), low (11%) and very low (17%). The varieties classified in the group with very high AC were Carícia, Mollies and Imperatriz. The Gala varieties showed a great variability in AC, with values classified as high and low, while the Fuji, with less variability, was classified as low AC. The classification of apples based on TPC and AC using hierarchical cluster analysis was performed and the results can be of great value to geneticists, producers and consumers.

An active orthosis （AO） is a robotic device that assists both human gait and rehabilitation therapy. This work proposes portable AOs, one for the knee joint and another for the ankle joint. Both AOs will be used to complete a robotic system that improves gait rehabilitation. The requirements for actuator selection, the biomechanical considerations during the AO design, the finite element method, and a control approach based on electroencepha-lographic and surface electromyographic signals are reviewed. This work contributes to the design of AOs for users with foot drop and knee flexion impairment. However, the potential of the proposed AOs to be part of a robotic gait rehabilitation system that improves the quality of life of stroke survivors requires further investigation.

A prominent change is being carried out in the fields of rehabilitation and assistive exoskeletons in order to actively aid or restore legged locomotion for individuals suffering from muscular impairments, muscle weakness, neurologic injury, or disabilities that affect the lower limbs. This paper presents a characterization of knee motion patterns from Surface Electromyography (sEMG) signals, measured in the Erector spinae (ES) muscle. Feature extraction (mean absolute value, waveform length and auto-regressive model) and pattern classification methods (Linear Discrimination Analysis, K-Nearest Neighborhood and Support Vector Machine) are applied for recognition of eight-movement classes. Additionally, several channels setup are analyzed to obtain a suitable electrodes array. The results were evaluated based on signals measured from lower limb using quantitative metric such as error rate, sensitivity, specificity and predictive positive value. A high accuracy (> 95%) was obtained, which suggest that it is possible to detect the knee motion intention from ES muscle, as well as to reduce the electrode number (from 2 to 3 channels) to obtain an optimal electrodes array. This implementation can be applied for myoelectric control of lower limb active exoskeletons.

In this paper the resonant behavior of frequency selective surfaces, FSS, using matryoshka geometry is analyzed considering polarizations x and y. The basics of the FSS using matryoshka geometry are described for usual and open cases, including an expression to estimate the first resonant frequency. Initially, the FSS with two concentric square rings is considered and its resonant behavior analyzed. Then, the resonant behavior of FSS with two rings matryoshka geometry is examined. The analysis is based on the electric current distribution obtained using the commercial software ANSYS-Designer. With a better understanding of the resonance nature in matryoshka geometry the design parameters can be better adjusted and desired frequency responses properly achieved. © 2015 IEEE.

The synthesis reaction used in esterification needs high energy consumption and a precise processing time to get the best yield of target. In this study, a model was formulated to optimize glycerol esterification process by minimizing the time needed for the process and maximizing the yield of Mono-glycerides. This optimization has gained importance for boosting the esterification industry and improving the production efficiency. Optimization through adaptive monitoring and control has provided significant advances in the process efficiency, a lower energy consumption and a better product quality. This paper presents the optimization with a computational algorithm in real time and adaptive control (RTAC), as compared to the conventional (traditional) methods to monitor and control of glycerol esterification processes. The identification of esterification status based on temperature and time are evaluated to strengthen the optimization. An adaptive method as feature selection to select wavelength IR sensors at specified intervals was carried out with Relief algorithm and Adaptive Pillar K-means clustering method to set the parameter control was proposed in this paper. Many combinations were evaluated from real time condition process, to achieve the best optimization results. The experimental results demonstrate that real time adaptive control can be achieved by using three clusters, which are heating up, stabilizing and finishing. In RTAC, each cluster has its own parameter to set the control point by the servo motor that was attached to magnetic stirrer-heater. By using optimization parameter for each cluster, esterification process time can be shortened by 15-20 minutes with a higher yield (7% or more), lower range stirrer rotation (300rpm-450 rpm) and a lower final temperature of 200℃ - 210℃.

This paper proposes two seven level asymmetric inverter with coupled inductors that enable a reduction in the number of controlled switching devices. However, the lack of redundant states and difference in the maximum pole voltages reduce the performance of the inverters due to higher winding currents and saturation of magnetic core. For mitigating those issues, a coupled inductor with elevated magnetizing inductance is used. The operation principle, conducting states and modulation strategy are described. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of proposed topology. © 2015 IEEE.

Thermoelectric (TE) modules are solid-state devices that convert directly thermal energy in electrical energy. However, they can undergo performance degradation due to thermal cycling. In the present study, a control-based test platform that is capable to apply specific thermal cycling pattern at periodic intervals is presented in order to evaluate performance degradation that influence the TE module lifetime. Using this test platform, some parameters and the figure of merit ZT of a commercial TE module are measured before and after thermal cycling application. An important feature of the proposed platform is that the applied thermal cycling is bipolar, that is, it is possible to apply positive or negative temperature difference and, through this, performance degradation would be observed after only 548 thermal cycles much lower than previous works. © 2015 IEEE.
