In this paper, three unidirectional single-phase rectifiers are proposed. Each converter is composed of two non-controlled legs and two controlled legs. Modelling and control strategy of the system, including a synchronization method, are proposed. In the synchronization method, the grid current is synchronized with the generated voltage ensuring a sinusoidal grid current without zero-crossover distortions. Analysis of harmonic distortion and semiconductor losses are presented. Simulation and experimental results are shown for validation purposes.

Finite Element Modelling of Steel Beams with Web Openings

Height limitations are not uncommon in multi-storey buildings due to economic requirements and esthetical considerations. Substantial spaces are normally required to enable the passage of large pipes and ducts beneath steel beams leading to uneconomic floor heights. The most adopted solution for this issue is the use of steel beam web openings to provide the required space for services. These openings could lead to a significant decrease of the beam load carrying capacity depending on the adopted openings shape, size and location. These aspects motivated the present study based on FE simulations calibrated against numerical and test results. The results accuracy enabled a comprehensive parametric analysis of beams with web openings to be made focused on the profile size, web opening location, among others. The study also investigated the efficiency of longitudinal stiffeners welded at the opening region and benefits of using an adequate edge concordance radius in beams with rectangular and square openings. The obtained results showed the need of using welded longitudinal stiffeners in order to increase the beams ultimate load carrying capacity. This adoption can double or even triple the ultimate load of beams with rectangular and square opening heights equal to 0.75 H, respectively.

A way to deal with the variations in the link quality of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is the use of strategies for Dynamic Channel Allocation (DCA). The first step to perform DCA is estimating the channel quality, so that the network nodes can decide if a channel change is needed, and the best channel to be used. This paper proposes a distributed approach with nodes dedicated to monitor channel quality, by using the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) and the Link Quality Indicator (LQI) to identify low quality channels. This approach is acceptable in industrial WSN, since the network deployment can be performed with adequate planning. Furthermore, the sensor nodes do not need to stop their operation for monitoring the channel quality. As a first step, experiments were performed in a real industrial environment to identify the relation between RSSI and LQI traces, and the Packet Error Rate for different channels, by using IEEE 802.15.4 radios operating in the 2.4 GHz band. © 2014 IEEE.

Background: High-resolution estimates of HIV burden across space and time provide an important tool for tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts and assist with improving the precision and efficiency of targeting efforts. We aimed to assess HIV incidence and HIV mortality for all second-level administrative units across sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: In this modelling study, we developed a framework that used the geographically specific HIV prevalence data collected in seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care clinics to train a model that estimates HIV incidence and mortality among individuals aged 15–49 years. We used a model-based geostatistical framework to estimate HIV prevalence at the second administrative level in 44 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for 2000–18 and sought data on the number of individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) by second-level administrative unit. We then modified the Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) to use these HIV prevalence and treatment estimates to estimate HIV incidence and mortality by second-level administrative unit. Findings: The estimates suggest substantial variation in HIV incidence and mortality rates both between and within countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with 15 countries having a ten-times or greater difference in estimated HIV incidence between the second-level administrative units with the lowest and highest estimated incidence levels. Across all 44 countries in 2018, HIV incidence ranged from 2·8 (95% uncertainty interval 2·1–3·8) in Mauritania to 1585·9 (1369·4–1824·8) cases per 100 000 people in Lesotho and HIV mortality ranged from 0·8 (0·7–0·9) in Mauritania to 676·5 (513·6–888·0) deaths per 100 000 people in Lesotho. This work presents an alternative method to detect events correlated to eyes opening and closing, based on electroencephalography (EEG) measured from the occipital lobe. The goal is to propose a method based on linear discriminant function to classify segments of EEG signals that contain activities originated by eyes closing. A linear discriminant function presented by Fisher is employed to detect these activities on segments of 2s. This method showed a good values of sensitivity (SE ≥ 85 %) and specificity (SP ≥ 60 %). This approach can be used to control the switching of a brain computer interface (BCI).

This paper presents an AC drive system based on six-phase machine with three neutrals. The machine side converter has nine power legs and can be connected to the grid through one single DC-link or three isolated DC-links. Compared with the conventional back-to-back AC six-phase machine drive system, the proposed drive system permits reducing the DC-link voltages, eliminating step-up transformer, and the voltage at the grid side converter has higher amplitude than that of the machine side, reducing the transmission I 2 R losses. The system model and PWM strategy are presented and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the system.

This paper presents an Ethernet sniffer programmed in ANSI C to export in an on-line way the electroencephalographic (EEG) data acquired with the device BrainNet36 ® , which is a Brazilian EEG device for clinical and polysomnography purposes. The sniffer proved to be useful for off-line analysis of the EEG and also for on-line applications, as Brain Computer-Interfaces (BCIs). Despite its limitations and packet losses at around 1.7% due to noise, the off-line analysis of the EEG successfully replicated results of the literature regarding the Event-Related (De)Synchronization (ERD/ERS) and Evoked Potentials (EPs) calculated for mental tasks. For on-line applications the sniffer was used to program a single-switch BCI for on-line classification of motor and no motor mental tasks with high success rate. Nowadays, the BrainNet36 ® device is being used for EEG research at many Brazilian universities, therefore, we hope that this article may encourage on-line applications. Finally, as the sniffer operation is explained here with examples, this text may serve as a reference guide for potential user's.

A novel multi-level AC six-phase motor drive is developed in this paper. The scheme is based on three conventional 2-level three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) supplying the open-end windings of a dual three-phase motor (six-phase induction machine). The proposed inverter is capable of supply the machine with multi-level voltage waveforms. The developed system is compared with the conventional solution and it is demonstrated that the drive system permits to reduce the harmonic distortion of the machine currents, to reduce the total semiconductor losses and to decrease the power processed by converter switches. The system model and the Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) strategy are presented. The experimental verification was obtained by using IGBTs with dedicated drives and a digital signal processor (DSP) with plug-in boards and sensors.

This paper presents an ac-dc-ac reversible nine-phase machine drive system. The grid side converter is composed of Y-connected single-phase bridges. As the machine is composed of three three-phase groups, a three-leg converters are connected separately to each group. The topology does not make use of input isolation transformers and reduces the power processed by converter switches when compared to that of conventional two-level converter. Moreover, harmonic distortion in voltages generated by the grid side converter is reduced when compared to conventional two-level converter. The model and the control strategy have been developed. Simulation and experimental results are also presented. © 2014 IEEE.

Most operating systems implement their own power management techniques, but it is hard to modify or hack their power policies without the source code. Many dynamic power management architectures have been proposed in the literature, but they are not integrated with the underlying OS power manager. In this work, we propose a software framework for user-level power management, with a flexible architecture to be adapted to different policies and integrated with OS power managers.
