Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects at least 5% of the world population. ADHD typically starts in childhood and can affect normal development that can cause serious consequences during adulthood. Moreover, there are three subtypes of ADHD, each with its symptomatic differences that require particular treatment. The development of tools capable of detecting the brain differences between each subtype and a control group can help in directing future neuropsychological studies and guide treatments. Here we investigate the hypothesis of using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) as a tool to detect ADHD in connectivity networks of the brain. This research used the Yeo brain parcellation maps from 28 healthy volunteers, 36 combined subtype ADHD, and 26 inattentive type ADHD. The CNN achieved a 64.71% accuracy at detecting the multi-class diagnosis (Control, ADHD combined, or ADHD inattentive) when using the complete connectivity network matrix, surpassing the individual accuracies achieved when using only the within network connectivity measures. However, the separate analysis of each network showed that the Dorsal, Default and Frontoparietal networks have better accuracy of performing the classification compared to using other within brain connectivity measures. The Default Network has shown greater accuracy at identifying ADHD-I than the other within networks or whole brain connectivity measures. These results suggest that the neurological differences of the presence of ADHD and its subtypes may be present and, therefore, affect more than one connectivity network functionality. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This work proposes using the You Only Look Once (YOLO) architecture for defect detection in suspension polymeric insulators from images. Firstly, an image dataset of 138 kV polymeric suspension insulators was developed. Then, the dataset was augmented by horizontal and vertical flips to increase the training data. Afterward, YOLOv8n and YOLOv8s architectures were trained and used to detect insulator defects from the captured images. The developed models can detect four insulator defects: exposed rod, end fitting corrosion, cracks, and damaged sheds. Finally, the trained models were evaluated based on precision, recall, mean Average Precision (mAP), and confusion matrix. The results showed that YOLOv8s presented satisfactory results and potential for deploying and experimentation on UAVs to monitor polymeric insulators.

The prevalence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is increasing worldwide mainly due to poor oral hygiene and unrestricted lifestyle. Advanced-stage OSCC is associated with poor prognosis and a 5-year survival rate of only 30%–50%. The present study was designed to investigate the anticancer effect and mode of action of Glycyrrhiza-derived semilicoisoflavone B (SFB) in 5-fluorourasil (5FU)-resistant human OSCC cell lines. The study findings revealed that SFB significantly reduces OSCC cell viability and colony formation ability by arresting cell cycle at the G2/M and S phases and reducing the expressions of key cell cycle regulators including cyclin A, cyclin B, CDC2, and CDK2. The compound caused a significant induction in the percentage of nuclear condensation and apoptotic cells in OSCC. Regarding pro-apoptotic mode of action, SFB was found to increase Fas-associated death domain and death receptor 5 expressions and reduce decoy receptor 2 expression, indicating involvement of extrinsic pathway. Moreover, SFB was found to increase pro-apoptotic Bim expression and reduce anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL expressions, indicating involvement of intrinsic pathway. Moreover, SFB-mediated induction in cleaved caspases 3, 8, and 9 and cleaved poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase confirmed the induction of caspase-mediated apoptotic pathways. Regarding upstream signaling pathway, SFB was found to reduce extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK) phosphorylation to execute its pro-apoptotic activity. The Human Apoptotic Array findings revealed that SFB suppresses claspin expression, which in turn caused reduced phosphorylation of ATR, checkpoint kinase 1 (Chk1), Wee1, and CDC25C, indicating disruption of ATR-Chk1 signaling pathway by SFB. Taken together, these findings indicate that SFB acts as a potent anticancer compound against 5FU-resistant OSCC by modulating mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and ATR-Chk1 signaling pathways. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects about 5% of the population. In order to minimize ADHD effects, it is important to identify its biomarkers. We analyzed electroencephalographic (EEG) signals using a random forest (RF) classifier optimized with a genetic algorithm (GA) to find differences between control and ADHD groups. Data from 856 participants were analyzed with a preprocessing procedure that included artifact subspace reconstruction (ASR) and independent component analysis (ICA). After preprocessing and GA optimization, the RF classifier achieved 88.6% total average accuracy considering the theta frequency band. This outcome suggests that this approach has great potential as a biomarker analyzer for ADHD diagnosis. © 2024 IEEE.

GIS-Based Methodology for Crash Prediction on Single-Lane Rural Highways

Due to the need to update the current guidelines for highway design to focus on safety, this study sought to build an accident prediction model using a Geographic Information System (GIS) for single-lane rural highways, with a minimum of statistically significant variables, adequate to the Brazilian reality, and improve accident prediction for places with similar characteristics. A database was created to associate the accident records with the geometric parameters of the highway and to fill in the gaps left by the absence of geometric highway plans through geometric reconstitution or semi-automatic extraction of highways using satellite images. The Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) method was applied to estimate the coefficients of the model, assuming negative distribution of the binomial error for the count of observed accidents. The accident frequency and annual average daily traffic (AADT) were analyzed, along with the spatial and geometric characteristics of 215 km of federal single-lane rural highways between 2007 and 2016. The GEE procedure was applied to two models having three variations of distinct homogeneous segmentation, two based on segments and one based on the kernel density estimator. To assess the effect of constant traffic, two more variations of the models using AADT as an offset variable were considered. The predominant correlation structure in the models was the exchangeable. The principal contributing factors for the occurrence of collisions were the radius of the horizontal curve, the grade, segment length, and the AADT. The study produced clear indicators for the design parameters of roadways that influence the safety performance of rural highways.

This paper addresses the problem of input-to-state stability (ISS) and stabilization of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) coupled with a system of homogeneous linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) through the boundaries. First, a Lyapunov result characterizing the ISS property for finite-dimensional systems is extended to deal with coupled ODE and PDE systems. The proposed ISS condition is then applied to derive stability and stabilization conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality constraints assuming magnitude bounded disturbances at the boundaries. Two convex optimization problems are also proposed in order to obtain either an optimized reachable set estimate or a boundary controller that minimizes the disturbance effects on the ${\mathcal{L}}_{2} \times \mathbb{R}$-norm of the system states. Numerical examples illustrate the potential of the proposed approach.

Grape processing generates residues rich in bioactive compounds with potential application in the meat ***,these substances are unstable and needs to be treated to allow their action during the processing and storage of meat *** this sense,a phenolic-rich extract from grape pomace was microencapsulated and evaluated for its potential to inhibit the oxidative process in raw and precooked beef burgers during cold *** hamburger formulations containing lyophilized extract(LEB),microencapsulated extract(MEB)and synthetic antioxidant sodium erythorbate(SEB)were prepared,pre-cooked,and evaluated for lipid and protein *** microencapsulation,with 95.0%efficiency,provided a material with a crystalline structure,rich in phenolics and with high antioxidant potential,showing 377.4±0.01,1768.1±0.07 and 1185.0±0.20μmol TEAC.100 g^(−1) for DPPH,ABTS and FRAP,*** values of malonaldehyde were found in LEB and MEB(2.9±0.3 and 1.4±0.5 mg ***^(−1),respectively)at the end of storage,with emphasis on for the hamburgers that received the microencapsulated *** behavior was observed for the analysis of carbonyl compounds,with values of 11.1±1.1,8.7±1.4 and 6.8±1.0 nM ***^(−1) in SEB,LEB and MEB,***,the freeze-dried and microencapsulated grape extracts showed superior results when compared to the synthetic antioxidant,increasing the oxidative stability of hamburgers,and avoiding significant color changes during the cold *** results indicate the high potential of the microencapsulated material to be used as a natural antioxidant in the meat industry.

Biogas generated from urban solid waste degradation in landfills is composed of various types of gases, some of them are very toxic and harmful to the health of both humans and animals, and contribute directly to global warming as well. In this way, the monitoring of biogas concentration in landfills and their surroundings is very important because this can assess the air contamination around landfills, as well as to propose means to minimize it. In this work, an electronic nose for gas identification and measurement of gases present in landfill biogas using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is introduced. The ANN training data have been collected by the developed electronic nose, which consisted on a set of low-cost gas sensors and on a signal acquisition system controlled by the LabViewsoftware. After the ANN training, a neural architecture has been obtained and implemented in a microcontrolled digital system to measure different gas concentrations, mainly, methane. The main results of the proposed ANN-based Electronic Nose show that it was possible to measure the gases concentrations, with RMSE less than 1%, for the most of target gases, confirming the accuracy of the developed system.

Thermal comfort can be defined as the 'condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment.', and adaptive control measures comprise an adjustment to indoor environmental conditions based on occupant preferences, behavior, and feedback. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) in thermal comfort and adaptive control measures has the potential to significantly improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort in buildings. The adoption of the Working-from-home modality by several institutions and companies during and after the 2020 pandemic, accelerated the development of even more advanced and effective solutions in this area. This study, in its first phase, seeks to identify input parameters related to adaptive control measures adopted by the same occupants in two work environments (office building and residences) to promote personal thermal comfort contributing to the development of individual devices and IoT applications related to thermal comfort monitoring. © 2023 ITMA.

This study investigated the action of proteolytic enzymes in the production of goat viscera hydrolysates,and their flavoring *** study focus the production of flavor precursor molecules and the formation of volatile compounds resulting from four hydrolysis treatments:HA-Alcalase®,HF-Flavourzyme®,HN-Neutrase®,and HFN-Flavourzyme® and Neutrase®.The highest degree of hydrolysis (26.74%),number (23 volatiles) and concentration of volatile compounds (274.0 μg/L) were obtained with the action of *** main classes of volatile compounds identified in hydrolysates included acids,aldehydes,pyrazines,terpenes and Streacker *** acids,sugars and fatty acids were identified with higher concentrations in HF and HFN hydrolysates due to the low participation of these precursors in the formation of volatile ***,the use of Alcalase in the proteolysis of goat viscera stood out compared to other enzymes,providing impacting aroma compounds,such as pyrazines,for meat flavor.
