Immobilised bacterial cells in decolourisation of azo dyes: a bibliometric analysis

Bioremediation is traditionally performed using free bacterial cells;however, immobilised bacterial cells have gained attention recently as a promising technique due to the numerous benefits presented. Removing dyes by biological processes is gaining apparent interest because it is profitable and environmentally friendly. Azo dyes, released into the environment, have dangerous effects on aquatic and human life, and their persistence and discharge into the environment are becoming a global concern. Considering the importance of the aspects involved in the bioremediation of azo dyes by immobilised microbial cells and the growing number of publications on the subject, this review aimed to survey state-of-the-art and make a bibliometric mapping of these studies in the period from 2013 to 2023. The analysis of articles was selected from the Science Direct database. The bibliometric mapping provided relevant data to understand the evolution of research in the area and the main bottlenecks that must be overcome for future advances to be achieved. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Decade-long performance of constructed wetlands in the dairy industry following an aerated facultative pond

Long-term data are essential for decision-making in the operation of constructed wetlands;however, such data are scarce. In the present study, a subsurface flow CW system was monitored over a 10-year period for the treatment of wastewater from the dairy industry. Prior to the CW, an aerated facultative lagoon was operated, and its data were also included in the study. The integration of both natural treatment systems (Lagoon + CW) revealed synergy in the combined removal of pollutants and nutrients. Up until the seventh year of operation, the integration of the systems removed more than 98% of COD, BOD5, and TSS, as well as 99.8%, 96.5%, and 71.3% of oils and greases, ammoniacal nitrogen, and total phosphorus, respectively. Surfactants, oils, and greases were entirely removed. The presence of significant clogging and surface flow from the seventh year onwards led to a reduction in treatment efficiency, indicating that this is the maximum recommended operating time for CWs following an aerated facultative lagoon in the dairy industry. After this period, all substrates should be replaced. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Biogas generated from urban solid waste degradation in landfills is composed of various types of gases, some of them are very toxic and harmful to the health of both humans and animals, and contribute directly to global warming as well. In this way, the monitoring of biogas concentration in landfills and their surroundings is very important because this can assess the air contamination around landfills, as well as to propose means to minimize it. In this work, an electronic nose for gas identification and measurement of gases present in landfill biogas using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is introduced. The ANN training data have been collected by the developed electronic nose, which consisted on a set of low-cost gas sensors and on a signal acquisition system controlled by the LabViewsoftware. After the ANN training, a neural architecture has been obtained and implemented in a microcontrolled digital system to measure different gas concentrations, mainly, methane. The main results of the proposed ANN-based Electronic Nose show that it was possible to measure the gases concentrations, with RMSE less than 1%, for the most of target gases, confirming the accuracy of the developed system.

Influence of the Corrosion Degree of Hot-Dipped Galvanized Reinforcements on its Bond Strength to Concrete

This work studies the behavior of hot-dipped galvanized steel against chloride corrosion and its effect on its bond strength to concrete. Two steel diameters were adopted and bond strength was assessed using a standardized pull-out test, followed by measuring different degrees of corrosion. The results show that the initial corrosion of hot-dipped galvanized steel, due to the high alkalinity of fresh concrete, does not affect the structural performance of reinforced concrete and that galvanized steel has superior bond strength to concrete than non-galvanized steel for small corrosion rates. Contamination of aquatic and terrestrial organisms by Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), emerging contaminants, is widespread, as these compounds are present in water, soil, air, and food, owing to their environmental persistence. PFAS exposure induces biochemical process alterations associated with the disruption of the antioxidant defense system in several species. This review aims to discuss how PFAS-induced antioxidant system alterations lead to changes in biochemical processes in different organisms exposed to these pollutants. This disruption, then leads to an imbalance in antioxidant defense systems, contributing to the formation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which, in turn, can be exacerbate oxidative stress, induce cellular damage, enhance lipid peroxidation, destabilize lysosomal membranes, and cause genotoxic effects, ultimately compromising DNA integrity. In acute tests, PFAS have led to mortality, growth inhibition, diminished behavioral and locomotor abilities, and reproductive impairment. PFAS-induced effects differ with varying species or types of substances, and further bioaccumulation through food chains exacerbates environmental contamination, carrying considerable risks. These findings demonstrate the complex and enduring impact of PFAS on environmental health, emphasizing the importance of this review in corroborating studies on sub-lethal toxicity in exposed organisms and how these effects reflect on the environment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Statistical trends of rainfall (annual and seasonal rainfalls) in Kerala, India were characterised using the 44-years (1980–2023) data of Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) version 2. Monthly rainfall data were collected from the selected fifty locations which represent the state as a whole, and the collected data were then categorised into annual as well as seasonal (winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon) datasets based on the classification proposed by Indian Meteorological Organisation (IMD). Lag-1 autocorrelation, modified Mann Kendall (mMK), Pettitt test and Theil-Sen’s slope methods were used to determine the statistical characteristics of rainfalls in Kerala. Mean rainfalls were 3124 mm, 66 mm, 527 mm, 1667 mm and 862 mm, respectively, for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon periods. mMK based statistical trend analysis revealed an overall decreasing trend characteristics in annual (-0.54 mm.y⁻¹), monsoon (-1.20 mm.y⁻¹), and post-monsoon (-0.93 mm.y⁻¹) seasons whereas winter and summer rainfalls showed an increasing trend (0.67 mm.y⁻¹ and 3.40 mm.y⁻¹, respectively) for the state as a single unit. Pettitt test indicated four dominant periods of change in rainfall characteristics in the study area that spanned over the decades of 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010, in which major changes in annual and seasonal rainfalls were occurred during 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. Theil-Sen’s slope-based estimation of rate of change in rainfall showed an average variation of -4.33 mm.y⁻¹, 0.17 mm.y⁻¹, 6.27 mm.y⁻¹, -6.54 mm.y⁻¹ and − 3.28 mm.y⁻¹ for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively. Damage is defined as any change to the material, geometry or boundary condition that can modify the structure’s properties or response. In the past, damage identification was performed through periodical inspection, non-destructive testing/non-destructive evaluation, or visual observation. Structural health monitoring (SHM) has emerged to transition from offline damage identification to near real-time and online damage assessment. Hence, SHM is a damage detection strategy to monitor a structure for a period using a series of continuous measurement devices, which then collect the system’s characteristics and subsequently perform statistical analysis to assess the current circumstances and health of the structure. One of the first steps for the study of SHM is damage detection followed by monitoring. Machine Learning (ML) techniques can be used to develop viable algorithms to make potential predictions. ML algorithms are therefore providing the tools needed to enhance the capabilities of SHM systems and provide intelligent solutions to past challenges. Preliminary studies have reviewed that the extension of ML into SHM has dramatically increased the system’s capabilities, providing innovative solutions to different research challenges. Plant-based milk alternatives are in the spotlight of novelty and Amazonian nut has a great potential for the preparation of these beverages. In the present study, extraction of Amazonian nut was carried out with water and creaming index was evaluated. Hydroethanolic annatto extract was subjected to spectrophotometric analysis in order to determine bixin content. Annatto nanodispersions were prepared through a low energy method involving stepwise addition of deionized water to organic phase. Dynamic light scattering analysis was performed for particle size distribution and encapsulation efficiency determined by ultracentrifugation. In the present paper, we prepared an Amazonian-nut milk alternative, being the prototype added of annatto nanodispersion. Sensory analysis with untrained panelists was performed. Nanosizing (diameter < 300 nm and polydispersity index < 0.400) of annatto extract was reached and toxicity assay of the nanodispersion prepared with annatto extract, polysorbate 80/sorbitan monooleate (HLB = 13), and propyleneglycol at a 2:1:1 ratio indicated no mortality in both gender of zebrafish. Attributes of color, aroma, flavor texture, overall opinion, and intention of purchasing revealed, together with consumer's acceptance, that a suitable Amazonian nut plant-based milk alternative could be reached, contributing to an integrated approach of using two Amazonian raw materials of economic interest for food purposes. © 2023 The Author(s)

The intensification of human activities, consumption, production, and exploitation of raw materials, coupled with rapid population growth and industrial activity development, has led to significant environmental impacts. As civilization progresses, the level of environmental pollution with toxic metals has also intensified. The ability to quickly detect heavy metal pollution in wastewater and find its source is critical for environmental monitoring and protection. In the search for cheaper and more economical materials to be used as precipitants, civil construction waste has been used for this application. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the utilization of construction and demolition waste (gypsum and cementitious mortar) in the retention of Copper, Lead, and Nickel metal ions. The assessment of the removal capacity of these metal ions using gypsum powder and cementitious mortar was conducted through chemical precipitation using batch experiments. The results obtained for Pb 2+ ions showed that increasing the mass of gypsum from 10 to 100 g resulted in precipitation rates ranging from 97.29 to 98.31 %. Gypsum also proved to be a viable alternative for Cu 2+ precipitation with rates of 92.99 to 96.65 %, while the most significant retention rate for Ni 2+ was observed for the mass of 100 g, reaching 94.63 %. In experiments using different types of cementitious mortar (ACI, ACII, ACIII, and common) as precipitants in a solution contaminated with copper at a constant concentration of 600 mg/L, it was found that the precipitation rates were practically the same, with ACIII mortar showing the highest percentage of precipitation. Therefore, the results obtained demonstrated that construction and demolition waste by-products rich in gypsum and cementitious mortar are efficient in removing toxic metals, representing promising alternatives for wastewater decontamination.

Chronic wounds have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life, necessitating the management of pain, infection, bleeding, and emotional challenges. Debridement, which involves the removal of nonviable tissue, is crucial for promoting wound healing. In addition to surgical methods, cost-effective alternatives such as local solutions and ointments with biological properties have been explored. The use of natural compounds with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and collagen-synthesizing abilities holds promise for wound healing. This in vitro and in vivo preclinical study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of a wound healing ointment containing bioactive ingredients derived from medicinal plants (extracts, essential oils, and vegetable oils). The chemical composition of the ointment was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to gain insights into its synergistic action. Preclinical tests were conducted following standardized protocols. FTIR analysis revealed similarities between the product’s spectrum and that of bioactive compounds. The in vitro tests demonstrated that all formulations of the ointment induced no cell death, DNA damage, or acute toxicity in cell cultures (p < 0.05). No lethal dose was observed, indicating the safety of the ointment at all concentrations. The ointment also stimulated a notably more organized, significantly higher collagen production compared to control groups (p < 0.05). In vivo preclinical analyses also demonstrated no adverse responses being effective in the healing process compared to the control group (silver sulfadiazine) in terms of wound contraction and ulcer re-epithelization (p < 0.05). Significantly higher means of wound contraction were observed in the groups treated with the bioactive-containing ointment when compared to both the positive control group (sulfadiazine) and the control untreated groups (p < 0.05).
