Demineralized crab and shrimp shell powder: Cost effective medium for bacillus Sp. R2 growth and chitinase production

Crustaceous wastes such as shrimp, crab and lobster, are chitinous solid waste of the shellfish processing industry. to select the best substrates for bacterial growth and enzyme activity, different poor and enriched media were investigated, furthermore, the non-dematerialized and dematerialized shells powders of crab, shrimp, prawn and the mixed powders of crab+ shrimp shells and crab+ prawn shells were tested as substrates for and chitinase production by the chitin degrading bacterium Bacillus sp. R2 in a submerged fermentation (SMF) culture. The results revealed that, the tested poor media failed to enhance enzyme production, whereas the tested enriched media promote growth and protein content efficiently, in contrast the demineralized chitinous wastes were generally good carbon and nitrogen sources for growth and chitinase production. The most favorable substrates were demineralized crab + prawn followed by crab + shrimp. The obtained results would certainly encourage the utilization of shellfish processing (Crab and Shrimp Shell) waste for the industrial production of chitinase via submerged fermentation (SMF).

The aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition (IR), characterize minerals (ICP-OES), antioxidant activity, total phenols, inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and antimicrobial activity of leaf extract of wild passion fruit (Passiflora foetida L.). The results obtained by Infrared of the hexane extract indicate the presence of aliphatic compounds such as fatty acids and esters, long chain alcohols and steroids. The major minerals were: phosphorus (1093.00 mg L-1), magnesium (418.77 mg L-1), sulfur (282.56 mg L-1) and potassium (157.46 mg L-1). The total phenolic content was 16.78 mg of gallic acid equivalent 100 g-1 extract. The hexane extract showed inhibition of 17.97% for antioxidant activity. The activity on AChE was 96.46% inhibition. As for microorganisms, the extract showed inhibition on Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus cereus (77.93%), Staphylococcus aureus (88.25%), Gram-negative Citrobacter freundii (82.74%), Salmonella typhimurium (83.21%) and yeast C. albicans (53.29%). The nutritional and environmental conditions have a great influence on chitinase production, due to the receptor-inducer system that control enzymes *** these sense, the aim of this study was to screen several nitrogen sources and optimize the most important fermentation conditions affecting Bacillus sp. R2 chitinase production. The results of one variable at time technique (OVAT) in shake flasks, revealed that among various nitrogen sources tested 0.5% yeast extract led to maximum production. Furthermore, the highest chitinase activity was detected after 24 h incubation period at temperature of 30C, initial pH: 7.5, 2.5 to 3% NaCl concentration and under 180 rpm shaking using 2.5% (8.9 × 108 CFU/ml) as best inoculum size. Drying was one of the primary processes in essential oil production. Time factor in drying affects both the content and chemical compositions of essential oils. This study aims to evaluate the influence of the drying time of kaffir lime leaves on the yield at room temperature and the major volatile compounds in the essential oils by observing day-to-day treatments. As a key odorants in essential oils, the quantity of citronellal was determined by Gas Chromatography (GC) using the standard compound. Based on the daily observation results, a long-time drying gave a significant effect on the yield and the major volatile compounds. The highest yield 1.26±0.07 % (w/w) was obtained on the fourth day, while the highest content of citronellal compounds, 87.58±0.33% was achieved on the fifth day of drying,. A prolonged drying time resulted in a negative effect on not only the quantity, but also the quality of essential oils. Accordingly, this study suggests that the drying technique at room temperature best lasts for four until five days to obtain the most favorable quality and quantity of essential oils.

We hereby propose a software solution to perform high quality electrical measurements for the characterization of WORM (write-once read many), a new generation memory device which is being intensively studied for non-volatile data storage. The as-proposed software is completely based on .NET framework and sample C# code. The paper performed a relevant measurement based on this software. Working WORM devices, based on a polymeric matrix embedded with gold and copper sulfide nanoparticles, have been used for test measurements. The aim of this paper is to show the main steps to develop a fully working measurement software without using any expensive dedicated software.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of inhibitory substances from the fruits of Capsicum spp. var. Canaimé against micro-organisms indicators. Mature fruits (1.0 kg) were purchased at an agricultural fair, dried in an oven, and then was continuously extracted on a Soxhlet apparatus for 6 h, using 500 mL of hexane. Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Listeria monocytogenes (ATCC 15313) and Bacillus cereus (ATCC 49456) were used to perform the antibacterial activity, as well as three Gram-negative strains: Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC 14028), Citrobacter freundi (ATCC 8090) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 25922). The antibacterial activity of hexane extract of Capsicum spp. fruits in some concentrations, was quite high when compared with the antibiotic. The level of inhibition was better towards Gram (-) bacteria compared to Gram (+) bacteria. The excellent bioactivity of the extract against S. typhimurium may be related to its selectivity. The present study demonstrated the efficacy of Capsicum spp. extract against pathogens that affect the health of human beings and presence of chemical assets that aid in the prevention of diseases. However, more in-depth studies are still needed to consolidate its use and application in pharmaceutical area. Copyright © 2018, AIDIC Servizi S.r.l.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Black cumin cultivated in many subtropical regions in the world, including Asia, Middle East, and North Africa. The most active constituent of black cumin is thymoquinone representing 18.4%–24% of the volatile oil and thymol. Data about thymoquinone and thymol came from the country of origin, but no data from tropical region. This study aimed to analyze the production of chlorophyll, thymoquinone, thymol, and malondialdehyde from black cumin cultivated at three altitudes of Indonesian tropical region. The result showed that Kuwait accession cultivated at middle altitude contains the highest levels of thymoquinone (2940.43 mg/kg), and the highest levels of thymol were found in India accession cultivated at high altitude (141.46 mg/kg). Data showed that the level of malondialdehyde at low (220 meter above sea level [masl]) and middle (560 masl) altitudes is higher than high (1.280 masl) altitude. © 2017 Institut Pertanian Bogor

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the P4 suicide screener in a multinational sample. The primary goal was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the scale and investigate its convergent validity by analyzing its correlation with depression, anxiety, and substance use. Study design: The study design is a cross-sectional self-report study conducted across 42 countries. Methods: A cross-sectional, self-report study was conducted in 42 countries, with a total of 82,243 participants included in the final data set. Results: The study provides an overview of suicide ideation rates across 42 countries and confirms the structural validity of the P4 screener. The findings indicated that sexual and gender minority individuals exhibited higher rates of suicidal ideation. The P4 screener showed adequate reliability, convergence, and discriminant validity, and a cutoff score of 1 is recommended to identify individuals at risk of suicidal behavior. Conclusions: The study supports the reliability and validity of the P4 suicide screener across 42 diverse countries, highlighting the importance of using a cross-cultural suicide risk assessment to standardize the identification of high-risk individuals and tailoring culturally sensitive suicide prevention strategies. © 2024 The Royal Society for Public Health
