Pumpkin is a potential source of vitamin A and β-carotene as an antioxidant, thus it is promising to be developed as functional food ingredients. However, pumpkin-based manufactured food is still limited. Hence an experiment is initiated to produce pumpkin and arrowroot starch-based instant porridge which is easy to prepare and people ranging from children to adults fond of it. Pumpkin was whisked and mixed with arrowroot starch in the ratio of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 5:1 until it became an instant porridge. The porridge was then put into a drum dryer (1 bar) and it was rotated at the speed of one or one and a half round per minute. Color and viscosity of the produced instant porridge were determined. The results indicated that physical characteristics of instant porridge were affected by ratio of pumpkin with arrowroot starch and the rotation speed of the drum dryer. Instant porridge made from pumpkin-arrowroot starch in the ratio of 5:1 and produced at the speed of one and a half round per minute had a color value of L: 74.43, a: 9.33, b: 32.50, and viscocity 47.4 cP.

Aluminum is one of the most abundant metals in the earth's crust. Although it shows no known biological function, it is recognized as an adjuvant in vaccines for human and veterinary uses. This study aims to evaluate the role of lifestyle and environment in the promotion of chronic disease. In it, we associated two factors: chronic exposure to aluminum and high-fat diets. Thus, we aimed to determine whether the association of long-term exposure to aluminum and high-fat diets affects the NTPDase and 5′-nucleotidase activities in the blood platelets and lymphocytes obtained from the mesenteric lymph nodes of young rats. In fact, the ectonucleotidase activities were shown to be upregulated upon exposure to aluminum plus high-fat diets. As a result, we can suggest that the progressive upregulation of ectonucleotidase activities that we observed could be controlling the extent of inflammation and immune response. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The purpose of this study was to compare the presence of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water at slaughtering place from traditional markets in Surabaya, Indonesia. A total of 120 samples (chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water, each of the 40 samples) were collected from the slaughtering place from traditional markets in Surabaya. The samples were analyzed the presence of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water. Isolation and identification Salmonella *** Escherichia coli were carried out according to the conventional culture-based method (ISO 6579:2002). This study showed Salmonella spp. was isolated by 85.00%, 57.50%, 52.50% of chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water, respectively. While *** was isolated by 77.50%, 65.00%, 75.00 % of chicken meat, intestinal contents and rinse water, respectively. Prevalence of Salmonella spp. and E. coli in chicken meat is higher than intestinal contents and rinse water. Thus, it is indicated that the contamination of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in chicken meat not only comes from intestinal contents and rinse water.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors. © 2024 American Association for the Advancement of science. Yogurt is a popular healthy food, consumed by many people. Probiotic are used for better growth and survival of probiotic bacteria as well as to improve organoleptic, rheological and technological properties of soy-yamgurt probiotic. The aims of this study were to determine physicochemical changes and survival of probiotic bacteria due to the effect of ratio of yam-bean with soy-bean extract on the quality of soy-yamgurt probiotic drink. The quality examined were total bacteria, antioxidant activity, lactic acid content, and acceptability including color, texture, flavor, and overall acceptance. This research had been performed using Completely Randomized Design two factorials, consist of five levels i.e.: ratio of yam-bean with soy-bean extract (100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75; 0:100) and the fermentation time (4,6 and 8 hours), the process was repeated three times. The results showed that ratio of yam-bean with soy-bean extract of 50:50 and fermentation for 6 hours incubation produced the best quality. Acceptable probiotic drink containing 1.44 x 109 CFU/mL lactic acid bacteria, IC50 of soy-yamgurt in the attenuation of free radical DPPH ranged from 58.718-18.112 mg/L in 5 minutes incubation and 39.7204-11.9925 mg/L in 60 minutes, and 0.48% lactic acid. This appearance of soy-yamgurt had yellow greenish color, desired texture and flavor, and received the highest score of overall acceptance.

Biomaterial compounds and bioactivity of horseshoe crab Carsinoscorpius rotundicauda biomass harvested from the Madura Strait

Carsinoscorpius rotundicauda or horseshoe crab biomass has great potential in pharmaceutical aspects, one of them as an antibacterial substance. Information related to the benefits of Carsinoscorpius rotundicauda biomass such as meat and blood is essential because in fact, this species is considered a pest by fishermen, a low market value and has no legal protection in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of biomaterial compounds of meat and bioactivity of Carsinoscorpius rotundicauda plasma on bacterial inhibition from three different stations harvested from the waters in Madura Strait. The observation of the utilization of the potential from horseshoe crab biomass ie meat and plasma was performed by measuring the content of biomaterial compound in horseshoe crab meat by HPLC method and zone of inhibition test for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in horseshoe crab plasma. Analysis of the relationship between the two parameters used the Principal Component Analysis. The highest content of biomaterial compounds of monoterpenoid and zoosterol is found in horseshoe crab from Bangkalan waters, namely monoterpenoid (18.33 ppm) and zoosterol (22.67 ppm), while the smallest compound content obtained in horseshoe crab from Probolinggo waters, namely monoterpenoid (13.67) ppm and zoosterol (17.33 ppm). The bioactivity of Dark Blue Plasma (BDP) and Light Blue Plasma (LBP) samples of horseshoe crab obtained around the Madura Strait has the ability to inhibit gram-positive bacteria higher than gram-negative bacteria. The total average of DBP plasma inhibitory power on Staphylococcus aureus was 10.00 mm and 10.07 mm on Bacillus, while that in LBP sample, Staphylococcus aureus was 9.11 mm and Bacillus was 9.67 mm. The high biomaterial compound content of horseshoe crab is in line with the ability of horseshoe crab plasma to inhibit Bacillus and Staphylococcus aureus.

Mechanical properties of chemically modified Sansevieria trifasciata/natural rubber/high density polyethylene (STF/NR/HDPE) composites: Effect of silane coupling agent

The main objective of this research is to study the effects of chemical modification on the mechanical properties of treated Sansevieria trifasciata fiber/natural rubber/high density polyethylene (TSTF/NR/HDPE) composites. Processing of STF/NR/HDPE composites was done by using an internal mixer. The processing parameters used were 135°C for temperature and a mixing rotor speed of 55 rpm for 15 minutes. Filler loading was varied from 10% to 40% of STF and the fiber size used was 125 µm. The composite blends obtained then were pressed with a hot press machine to get test samples of 1 mm and 3 mm of thickness. Samples were evaluated via tensile tests, Izod impact test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results showed that tensile strength and strain value decreased while tensile modulus increased when filler loading increased. Impact strength increased when filler loading increased and began to decrease after 10% of filler amount for treated composites. For untreated composites, impact strength began to decrease after 20% of filler loading. Chemical modification by using silane coupling agent has improved certain mechanical properties of the composites such as tensile strength, strain value and tensile modulus. Adding more amount of filler will also increase the viscosity and the stiffness of the materials.
