Analysis of synthetic natural gas injection into charcoal blast furnace

Recently, the synthetic natural gas (SNG) has been available for large consumers in the Brazilian domestic market. The SNG is a suitable fuel with potential use to several processes and facilities of the steel industry. This paper investigates the injection of SNG into charcoal blast furnaces as a substitute for granular charcoal charged from the top and pulverized charcoal injections with potential increase of productivity and decrease of specific CO2 emissions. In order to study the effect of replacement of granular charcoal and injection of pulverized charcoal the well known Blast Furnace Five Fluid Model (BF-FFM) is applied to describe detailed phenomena within the process. This model treats the blast furnace as a five-phase reactor, accounting for gas, lump solids (raw iron ore, sinter, pellets and granular charcoal), hot metal, pulverized charcoal, and molten slag. The model is based on conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and chemical species numerically solved based on the finite volume method (FVM). The SNG has high amount of H2 and strongly affects the inner conditions of the reactor and only a comprehensive model with detailed chemical reaction rates can properly predict the inner parameters of the process and hence furnish useful information to design smooth operational conditions. The simulation results obtained in this study indicated that smooth operations using SNG up to 25 N m3/t of pig iron could be achieved simultaneously by increasing the productivity up to 58% and with a decrease of 40 kg/thm on the granular charcoal charged. © 2013 Brazilian Metallurgical, Materials and Mining Association.

Background: The literature indicates that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects cardiac autonomic control. In this study, we conducted a literature review in order to investigate the heart rate variability (HRV) in COPD subjects. Methods: A search was performed in Medline database, using the link between the keywords: "autonomic nervous system", "cardiovascular system", "COPD" and "heart rate variability". Results: The search resulted in a total of 40 references. Amongst these references, the first exclusion resulted in the barring of 29 titles and abstracts, which were not clearly related to the purpose of review. This resulted in a total of 11 articles that were then read and utilized in the review. The selected studies indicated that there is significant reduction of HRV in patients with COPD, characterized by reduction of indices that assess parasympathetic activity in addition to dealing with the global autonomic modulation. We also established that supervised exercise can reduce these harmful effects in COPD patients. Also, it was reported that the use of non-invasive ventilation in these patients may contribute to the improvement of respiratory symptoms, with no impairing, and may even induce positive responses in cardiac autonomic regulation. Conclusion: The studies indicate a need for further investigations to guide future therapies to improve the treatment of cardiovascular system in the respiratory diseases. © 2014 Roque et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Feeding mice aged and fresh blackberries powder supplements result in shifts in the gastrointestinal microflora

Blackberries contain anthocyanins and phenolic acids derived from anthocyanin fragments that have an important role in the small intestine for retaining gut health. It has been hypothesized that supplementing diets with blackberries may improve gut health through a prebiotic mechanism. Unfortunately identification of gut bacteria is difficult since only 20% of bacterial species can be cultured using current techniques. Therefore, a non-culture based technique was utilized to examine shifts in gut bacteria of mice fed one of five diet treatments: (1) control, (2) aged blackberries supplemented at 5% (w/w), (3) aged blackberries supplemented at 10% (w/w), (4) fresh blackberries supplemented at 5% (w/w), and (5) fresh blackberries supplemented at 10% (w/w). Mice feces were initially collected before supplementing blackberries as a control (0 week) and were collected every 2 weeks for up to 10 weeks. Polymerase chain reaction-based denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-based DGGE) was performed and further identification of bacteria was conducted by excising and sequencing target bands. Banding patterns were more consistent over time in those groups that had a diet supplemented with 10% aged or fresh blackberries compared to the 2 groups fed a diet supplemented with 5% of fresh or aged blackberries. From the sequencing data, Lactobacillus johnsonii was present in all groups after 2 weeks of sampling. The Aerococcus spp. and Actinomycetes were increased in blackberries treatments as well as Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella pneumonia and Erwinia spp. were present in aged blackberry treatment. These data indicate that supplementing a diet with aged or fresh blackberries causes shifts in the gastrointestinal microflora. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we address the task of hierarchical bird species identification from audio recordings. We evaluate three types of approaches to deal with hierarchical classification problems: the flat classification approach, the local-model per parent node classifier approach and the global-model hierarchical-classification approach. For the flat and local-model classification approach we employ the classic Naive Bayes algorithm. For the global-model approach we use the Global Model Naive Bayes (GMNB) algorithm. As in the classical Naive Bayes, the algorithm computes prior probabilities and likelihoods, but these computations take into account the hierarchical classification scenario: it assumes that any example which belongs to a given class will also belong to all its ancestor classes. In the current application, the employed class hierarchy is the standard scientific taxonomy of birds used in Biology. In order to deal with the bird songs we obtain features by computing several acoustic quantities from intervals of the audio signal. We conduct three experiments in order to compare the three different approaches to the hierarchical bird species identification problem. Our experimental results show that the use of the GMNB hierarchical classification algorithm outperforms both the flat and local-model approaches (Using the Hierarchical F-measure metric);hence the use of a global-model approach (such as the GMNB) can be a feasible way to improve the classification performance for problems with a large number of classes.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Service clues are a significant determinant of customers' perceptions of a service experience. The precis manipulation of all the various clues is critical in supporting a firm's strategies. Thus, this study aims to assess the combined effects of physical environment, employee behavior, andfood qualityon customers perceptions of service quality, perceived value, and satisfaction in western table-service restaurants. 307 subjects participated in the study with a 2(physical environment: positive vs. negative) x 2(employe behavior: favorable vs. unfavorable) x2(food quality: good vs. poor) factorial design. Results indicated tha employee behavior clues have the most influence on customers' perceptions of service quality, perceived value, and satisfaction.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is defined by a lack of expression of the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER 2). Therefore, targeted therapy agents may not be used, and therapy is largely limited to chemotherapy. Doxorubicin treatment consequently acquires undesired malignance characteristics [i.e., epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and multi-drug resistance]. Our results illustrated that doxorubicin triggered EMT and resulted in the acquisition of a mesenchymal phenotype in TNBC cells. Moreover, we found that transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways were acquired for doxorubicin-induced EMT. Interestingly, we found that curcumin suppressed doxorubicin-induced EMT. Curcumin reversed doxorubicin-induced morphological changes, inhibited doxorubicin-induced downregulation of E-cadherin expressions, and inhibited doxorubicin-induced upregulation of vimentin expression. We also found that curcumin inhibited doxorubicin-induced EMT by inhibiting the TGF-β and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. Moreover, curcumin enhanced the antiproliferative effects of doxorubicin in TNBC cells. In summary, our results suggest that doxorubicin in combination with curcumin may be a potential therapy for TNBC. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
