The growing demand for oil brings the need for discovery of deeper reservoirs, especially of ultra-deepwater reservoirs. Thus, production in marine systems using components such as risers (flexible or rigid pipes) has been the focus of many studies in different areas. These ducts are used in the transportation of multiphase fluids (oil, water and gas) produced from the oil well located on the seabed to the platform surface. Due to the extreme conditions present in the offshore fields of production, the equipments that transport produced fluids operate close to their limits. So eventually, the flexible pipes may have structural integrity faults like leaks, which can cause production losses, accidents with victims and environmental disasters. The leak depends of a number of properties or parameters measured at the site of the leak, for example, integrity of the pipe material, release of fluids and noise emission characteristics or manifestation of some other type of signal behavior, variation of pressure drops close to the leak, among others. There are a variety of techniques available for detecting leaks, among which there is the mathematical modeling approach using computational techniques. In this context, this paper aims to study the fluid dynamics of a transient multiphase flow in a catenary riser in the presence of leakage. Herein a 3D Eulerian-Eulerian model was applied, including the turbulent model (RNG k-ϵ), using the commercial package ANSYS CFX® 15 to perform all simulations. The numerical results of velocity, volume fraction and pressure of the involved phases are presented and discussed. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications.

Red guava is a fruit species with high vitamin C content and the highest fibers, in particular, soluble fiber (pectin) among tropical fruits and cereals. The soluble fiber is hypocholesterolemic in the body. Therefore, it has the potential to reduce cholesterol content. This study aimed to assess the potential of red guava in reducing cholesterol content in hypocholesterolemic rats. This study applied a pure experiment using a randomized pretestposttest group design on hypocholesterolemic Sprague Dawley rats. The rats were fed with 0.72 g of red guava and pectin supplement as a comparison. The total cholesterol content, LDL, HDL and triglyceride were measured by CHOD-PAP and GPO-PAP methods. Data analysis used t-test and ANOVA with significance rate of 0.05. Red guava intake to the hypocholesterolemic rats significantly reduced the contents of: total cholesterol to 57.8 mg/dL (32%), LDL to 25.5 mg/dL (43%), triglyceride to 19.7 mg/dL (18%). Conversely, it significantly increased HDL content to 10.6 mg/dL (18%). The red guava has proven to give hypocholesterolemic effect by reducing the total cholesterol LDL and triglyceride;Conversely, it significantly increased HDL. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Red guava contains fiber especially high soluble fiber (pectin). Soluble fiber in the body is hypocholesterolemia. This research aimed to know the effect of administering red guava on AIP (Atherogenic Index of Plasma) in hypocholesterolemia rats. This research was a pure experiment using the design of randomized pretest-posttest control group design to Sprague Dawley rats made into hypocholesterolemia. The rats were divided into four groups: group 1 given standard food, group 2, 3, and 4 given high cholesterol food. Group 3 and 4 were added with red guava powder as many as 0.72 g and pectin equal to the one in red guava powder. Lipid profile was checked by using Enzymatic Colorimetric Test CHOP-PAP and GPO-PAP including the rate of total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. AIP was counted based on log (TG/HDL). The data analysis used t-test and ANOVA with a 0.05 significance level. The administration of red guava in hypocholesterolemia rats was significantly proven to be able to lower lipid profile by lowering total cholesterol (32%), LDL (43%), triglycerides (18%),and by increasing HDL (18%). These results were similar to the decrease by administering pectin as many as 32%, 47%, and 20% respectively. The results of counting AIP showed that the administration of red guava and pectin could lower AIP score significantly as many as 0.16 and 0.17 respectively which increased in the groups getting high cholesterol food. The administration of red guava in hypocholesterolemia rats was proven to be able to lower AIP. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study, we investigated the drying properties of Sentang (Azadirachta excelsa) dried at different temperatures. Sentang tree planted in Kelantan, Malaysia, was used in this study. Drying specimens with dimensions of 30 ×150 × 500 mm were dried under air-drying conditions, a constant temperature of 60, 80, 100, and 120 °C until the moisture content (MC) of the specimens reaches an equilibrium moisture content (EMC) at each drying condition. The drying properties of the specimens were then examined. The results confirmed that drying temperature had a significant effect on drying time. As expected, drying Sentang under air-drying conditions demanding considerable time than the other drying conditions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

African swine fever (ASF), an economically damaging disease in domestic pigs, has emerged in Vietnam since 2019. Vietnam is the only country granted licenses for developing and commercializing modified live-attenuated vaccines (LAVs) against the highly pathogenic ASF virus (ASFV). The nationwide implementation of LAVs in Vietnam for prophylaxis has likely influenced the viral genetic pool among the swine population. This study highlighted the incursion of a novel ASF vaccine-like variant into a non-vaccinated breeding herd. Retrospective epidemiology suggested a high replacement rate and improper biosecurity measures might introduce the disease into the herd. Affected gilts displayed non-to-mild symptoms, whereas gestational sows experienced reproductive disorders. Remarkably, severe ulcerative dermatitis in udders was observed in lactating sows 1–2 weeks postpartum. The ASF outbreak was significantly associated with reduced reproductive performance compared to the pre-outbreak period (P < 0.001). Genetic analysis revealed several virulence-associated gene deletions and a marker gene presence in the left variable region, consistent with the ASFV-G-∆MGF vaccine strain. Molecular detection and immunohistochemistry indicated viral antigens distributed in macrophage-like cells of the reproductive organs and affected udders. Microscopic findings implied massive necrotizing vasculitis with fibrinoid degeneration compatible with immune complex-induced lesions. In conclusion, naïve sows are highly susceptible to the novel ASF vaccine-like variant than gilts, underscoring improved biosecurity requirements when introducing replacement gilts and monitoring ASF vaccine-like variants. © The Author(s) 2025.

This review aimed to offer to a scientific community a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the bioactive molecules in stingless bee propolis and geopropolis, emphasizing their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The results showed that these products contain a variety of bioactive compounds, key to their biological activity, such as antioxidants, antimicrobial and therapeutic properties. The research showed that the chemical composition could change considerably and be influenced by factors such as the geographical place of the hive, the collection period, and the bee species involved in the propolis/geopropolis production. Variations in the chemical profiles and biological performances are the attributes that these factors affect, to a large extent, the products. Besides detecting these properties, the study stressed the need for further research into the bioactive properties of stingless bee propolis/geopropolis. The high diversity of stingless bee species results from producing different types of propolis/geopropolis, each with its chemical composition. Diversity has to be used as a reason for carrying out particular studies for every kind of sample to understand their therapeutic applications and health benefits properly. The review will serve as a basis for future research, helping to guide further investigations into the biological activity (antioxidant, antimicrobial, and therapeutic properties) related to chemical substances and contributing to the development of new natural products based on stingless bee propolis/geopropolis.

The association between FokI polymorphism in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and susceptibility to arterial hypertension (HT) is controversial. Thus, we evaluated the relation between FokI and HT according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using MEDLINE® (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online)/PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library CENTRAL databases. Data from case-control studies, including the number of participants, age, 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations, systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, FokI allele, and genotype frequency were extracted by 2 independent authors and OR was calculated with the 95% CI to assess the strength of the association between the FokI variant and odds of HT. In general and subgroup analyses, we used allelic (f compared with F), common (ff compared with FF + Ff), risk (ff + Ff compared with FF), and additive (ff compared with FF) models. Six case-control studies including 3140 cases and 3882 controls were reviewed in the meta-analysis. Global assessment revealed a correlation between FokI and reduced odds of HT in the additive/homozygote model (ff compared with FF; OR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.45-0.94) and common/recessive model (ff compared with FF + Ff; OR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.57-0.99). In Asian subjects, there was a significant reduction in the odds of HT in additive (ff compared with FF; OR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.73-0.98) and risk models (ff + Ff compared with FF; OR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.78-0.97), in particular, for Indians (South). In Africans, the statistically significant association occurred in the additive and common models. Allele f in the FokI polymorphism of the VDR gene was associated with reduced odds of HT in the general population based on the risk model. Thus, nutritional genomics can help understand the influence of nutrition on metabolic homeostasis pathways and the clinical consequences of hypertension. Black cumin cultivated in many subtropical regions in the world, including Asia, Middle East, and North Africa. The most active constituent of black cumin is thymoquinone representing 18.4%–24% of the volatile oil and thymol. Data about thymoquinone and thymol came from the country of origin, but no data from tropical region. This study aimed to analyze the production of chlorophyll, thymoquinone, thymol, and malondialdehyde from black cumin cultivated at three altitudes of Indonesian tropical region. The result showed that Kuwait accession cultivated at middle altitude contains the highest levels of thymoquinone (2940.43 mg/kg), and the highest levels of thymol were found in India accession cultivated at high altitude (141.46 mg/kg). Data showed that the level of malondialdehyde at low (220 meter above sea level [masl]) and middle (560 masl) altitudes is higher than high (1.280 masl) altitude. © 2017 Institut Pertanian Bogor

The enormous amount of short reads generated by the new DNA sequencing technologies call for the development of fast and accurate read alignment programs. A first generation of hash table-based methods has been developed, including Mapping and Assembly with Quality (MAQ), which is accurate, feature rich and fast enough to align short reads from a single individual .However, MAQ does not support gapped alignment for single-end reads, which makes it unsuitable for alignment of longer reads where indels may occur frequently. The speed of MAQ is also a concern when the alignment is scaled up to the resequencing of hundreds of individuals. Therefore, we carried out an in-depth performance analysis of BWA a popular BWT-based aligner and discovered that its performance is significantly better than MAQ although, it has drawbacks regarding execution speed, time complexity and accuracy. Based on those factors we implemented an improved Burrows-Wheeler Alignment algorithm (BWA), anew read alignment package which is original BWT optimized by source code of Ziv-Lempel (LZ-77) sliding window technique and prefix trie string matching, to efficiently search for inexact and exact matches on tandem repeats against a large reference sequence genome. Our analysis show that search speed of improved BWA significantly increased by approximately 1.40 ×faster than MAQ-32 while achieving sufficiently higher accuracy with percent confidence of 96.7 % and 93.0 %. Moreover, it is more efficient to search exact and inexact matches supported by percent error of 0.05 % single ends and 0.04 % for paired end reads also more effective to search for left and right overlap tandem repeat at percent confidence of 88.9%

Blackberries contain anthocyanins and phenolic acids derived from anthocyanin fragments that have an important role in the small intestine for retaining gut health. It has been hypothesized that supplementing diets with blackberries may improve gut health through a prebiotic mechanism. Unfortunately identification of gut bacteria is difficult since only 20% of bacterial species can be cultured using current techniques. Therefore, a non-culture based technique was utilized to examine shifts in gut bacteria of mice fed one of five diet treatments: (1) control, (2) aged blackberries supplemented at 5% (w/w), (3) aged blackberries supplemented at 10% (w/w), (4) fresh blackberries supplemented at 5% (w/w), and (5) fresh blackberries supplemented at 10% (w/w). Mice feces were initially collected before supplementing blackberries as a control (0 week) and were collected every 2 weeks for up to 10 weeks. Polymerase chain reaction-based denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-based DGGE) was performed and further identification of bacteria was conducted by excising and sequencing target bands. Banding patterns were more consistent over time in those groups that had a diet supplemented with 10% aged or fresh blackberries compared to the 2 groups fed a diet supplemented with 5% of fresh or aged blackberries. From the sequencing data, Lactobacillus johnsonii was present in all groups after 2 weeks of sampling. The Aerococcus spp. and Actinomycetes were increased in blackberries treatments as well as Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella pneumonia and Erwinia spp. were present in aged blackberry treatment. These data indicate that supplementing a diet with aged or fresh blackberries causes shifts in the gastrointestinal microflora. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
