Product-Service Systems (PSS) have been discussed as promising business strategies towards a circular economy (CE). However, PSS solutions are not necessarily more sustainable. PSS lifecycle management may play an important role to improve the offering and achieve sustainability benefits. Nevertheless, bottom-up issues for CE implementation in the industry such as lifecycle management are still little discussed in the literature. In this sense, this paper aims to explore a PSS business strategy adopted by a large white goods manufacturer that transitioned from a linear to a circular business, and the practices applied throughout the entire lifecycle that may be valuable to achieve CE requirements. A case-based approach was employed in this study and multiple sources of evidence were considered. Data were analyzed in the light of the literature, considering an inductive approach. The main preliminary findings suggest that resources consumption reduction and cost savings can be obtained through lifecycle management practices that take into consideration CE issues since the beginning of life of the PSS offering. Design practices, the adoption of different strategies at the end of life (reuse/remanufacturing or recycle), and the implementation of cleaner production practices are some of the identified practices that can contribute to achieve resource efficiency and CE requirements. This is a work in progress and further work is going to focus on a quantitative analysis of the environmental and economic performance of this PSS. In addition, as this study focused on a use-oriented PSS, future research may compare lifecycle management practices adopted by other and distinct PSS categories, and how different lifecycle management practices may contribute to achieving resource efficiency.

Proposal of a Hotspot-based Approach to Identifying Social Impacts along the Product-Service Systems Life Cycle in the Early Design Phases

The potential for sustainability has been highlighted as one of the most important characteristics of product-service systems (PSS). Nevertheless, a PSS is not intrinsically sustainable. Methods and tools for PSS sustainability assessment should be developed to be integrated into the design process, especially in the early design phases, in order to conceive sustainable solutions. In addition, a PSS should be planned considering the three sustainability dimensions, from a life cycle perspective. However, PSS design and assessment considering the full life cycle is scarcely addressed in the literature, especially concerning the social dimension of sustainability. In this sense, this study proposes a streamlined life cycle assessment based approach to identify potential social impacts along the PSS life cycle that can be integrated into the early PSS design stages. The proposal is based on a hotspot analysis, which identifies where in the life cycle the most significant issues may occur. The proposal was developed in three main phases, anchored in both hotspots analysis and PSS literature. After developing it, 10 experts in PSS and sustainability assessed the proposal strengths and weakness. Some suggestions were offered by the researchers and improvements were introduced to the proposal regarding PSS life cycle phases and the social impact subcategories. The experts considered the hotspot analysis suitable to be applied in the early design stages when there is not much information yet regarding the system to conduct a complete life cycle assessment. The next step of this research is the proposal assessment by practitioners in industry. Further work will also integrate the environmental dimension of sustainability into the proposal.

Although several studies have discussed from various perspectives the market-change dynamics of consumption and how consumers impact them, only a few have looked at consumers who act as producers themselves and how they affect the market with their self-production practices. Using data from netnography, participant observation, introspection, and in-depth interviews, this study aims to understand the strategies used by the consumers of DIY (do-it-yourself) cosmetics, which affect the market dynamics and foster a specific market apart from mainstream. We identified three approaches: the strategies such consumers use to make their products;the sharing of consumption experiences;and the disclosure of these products and practices, thereby legitimating them. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

This paper aims at exploring how some factors identified in the PSS and product/service innovation literature can hinder or foster sustainable PSS implementation in developing countries, since there is a lack of knowledge concerning the characteristics of PSS transition processes in different contexts. The identified factors were investigated empirically, through two PSS solutions located in an emerging economy. The main results demonstrated the role of some potential factors in supporting the implementation and diffusion of PSS solutions, especially those related to the involvement of multiple actors in the value creation and the social embeddedness. However, the role of those factors still need to be investigated in future works, since only two cases were analyzed in this research. Analyses of successful and unsuccessful PSS cases as well as the identification of other factors and characteristics of PSS implementation in different contexts are directions for further research.

Cloud computing is considered a paradigm both technology and business. Its widespread adoption is an increasingly effective trend. However, the lack of quality metrics and audit of services offered in the cloud slows its use, and it stimulates the increase in focused discussions with the adaptation of existing standards in management services for cloud services offered. This article describes the EMSCloud, that is an Evaluative Model of Cloud Services following interoperability standards, risk management and audit of cloud IT services. Aims to present that is possible to assess the life cycle of services offered in the cloud in the technical dimensions of usability, good practices and economic viability.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in Brazil are factors of great economic importance, for they represent employment for more than fifty six million people. When we consider the country's overall population of two hundred million inhabitants we can understand the magnitude of such economic segment, and it means that it is responsible for the sustainability of the employment structure. As in any economic activity, it depends on efficiency and that means specialized management, low costs, low waste, high competitiveness: these factors assure the sustainability of such enterprises in the market. Apart from these factors, which are internal to the management, there are external factors that influence the enterprises' performance, such as policies to foster development, financial cost, qualified work force, the tax burden, value of local currency weighted against foreign currencies, and other factors. Management compliant with this matrix of factors is dependent upon the managers' vision. This comprehension by the managers about the different internal and external factors that influence the enterprise shall define the organizational culture that will prevail in this type of enterprises. For this study, we have researched the vision of SME's managers as far as internal and external factors that influence the management of enterprises. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014.

Aim The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial, marine, freshwater and subterranean). Location Worldwide, 12,343 sites, all ecosystem types. Time Period 1991 to present. Major Taxa Studied All soniferous taxa. Methods We synthesise sampling coverage across spatial, temporal and ecological scales using metadata describing sampling locations, deployment schedules, focal taxa and audio recording parameters. We explore global trends in biological, anthropogenic and geophysical sounds based on 168 selected recordings from 12 ecosystems across all realms. Results Terrestrial sampling is spatially denser (46 sites per million square kilometre—Mkm 2 ) than aquatic sampling (0.3 and 1.8 sites/Mkm 2 in oceans and fresh water) with only two subterranean datasets. Although diel and lunar cycles are well sampled across realms, only marine datasets (55%) comprehensively sample all seasons. Across the 12 ecosystems selected for exploring global acoustic trends, biological sounds showed contrasting diel patterns across ecosystems, declined with distance from the Equator, and were negatively correlated with anthropogenic sounds. Main Conclusions PAM can inform macroecological studies as well as global conservation and phenology syntheses, but representation can be improved by expanding terrestrial taxonomic scope, sampling coverage in the high seas and subterranean ecosystems, and spatio-temporal replication in freshwater habitats. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate a proposal on product portfolio management for the development of new products in a textile company. The research methods address the application of real data from the studied company. This work is characterized both as conceptual and field-based research. It constructs a proposal based on existing theory and involves an empirical application of that proposal. By using the portfolio selection and prioritization proposal, the company was able to select new products for development in a structured way. As continuity for this work, the paper suggests the application of product selection and prioritization for other organizations. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The program Support Plan Restructuring and Expansion of Brazilian Federal Universities (REUNI) allowed the expansion of course offerings and the number of university students in Brazil. In this sense, the participation of the Federal University of Santa Catarina allowed the creation and installation of new campuses Araranguá, Curitibanos and Joinville in 2009. The engineering Center for Mobility (CEM), installed on campus in the city of Joinville, had based their design limitations related to infrastructure in Brazil. Mobility engineering is a field of knowledge that deals with the development of technical systems and vehicular transportation infrastructure whose function is to transport people, products and information. This is a qualitative study, with analysis of documents and searches the sites, papers. In Political Pedagogical Project are offered three cycles of knowledge, the first two years of basic training and disciplines of engineering, the second course of a year, with disciplines that enable specific skills, and the third two-year cycle and how engineers in seven specialties (Naval and Oceanic engineering, Aeronautics and Space, Automotive, Railway, Mechatronics;Traffic and logistics, and transportation infrastructure). The objective of this paper is to analyze the innovative aspects of the political pedagogical project of CEM/UFSC, one of the organization in cycles with the training of engineers at the end of the fifth year of study, and also allows an exit for intermediate students who do not most want to complete engineering, at the end of the second cycle. In this case they can apply for graduation Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Mobility emphasis on training: vehicular or transport. Thus formed technicians and engineers, these professionals in underserved areas and with strong impact on the country's development.

The University is considered as playing a relevant role in the local context, as well as collaborating for the regional development due to its plural character. The Federal Universities are formal institutions that follow specific rules and regulations and are present in all Brazilian states aiming at educating professionals to meet the country's needs. Although being country-wide organizations, their action is local. A Federal University may be considered as a driver for local and regional development. Additionally, the institution has innovative principles and follows them, as is the case of UFSC (Santa Catarina Federal University) campus in Joinville-SC/BR. The aim of this paper is to analyze the creation of the Inovaparq in the light of the Triple Helix (TH) since the implementation of the Mobility engineering Center at UFSC. To this end, we adopted a qualitative approach as a method, with bibliographical and documental research, being configured as a case study. As a result of this action, there are the establishment of an Technological Innovation Park in Joinville and Region (Inovaparq), two public notices and some companies that had already working at Inovaparq platforms. The success of the incubated companies in Inovaparq is also an important outcome of this venture.
