This paper presents a shunt active power filter based on the concept of open-end winding (OEW) transformers. The proposed configuration is constituted of two converters with three legs each series connected throughout a three-phase OEW transformer. Model PWM strategy and control scheme are presented as well. The main advantage of the proposed system lies on the multi-level waveform generation, which allows reduction of either harmonic distortions or switching losses. This proposed topology is suitable for medium voltage (MV) distribution systems. Simulation and experimental results validate the theoretical study.

This paper presents a new code compression method where we use different dictionaries, all of them are based in traditional Huffman algorithm. Our method reduces code size by up to 34.5% (including all extra costs) and presents an improvement of almost 7% over the traditional Huffman method. We performed simulations using Simple Scalar and analyzes using the applications from benchmark MiBench and use the embedded processor ARM.

In supply chains of petroleum industry, maintaining a proper inventory level for multiple petroleum products is a crucial issue. Basically, this chain has several elements like producer bases, consumer bases and terminals that are linked by means of a multi-modal transport network. These elements must cooperate to achieve the global goal of the system with a minimized cost. To achieve this goal, this paper presents a multiagent protocol for simultaneous negotiations based on the Contract-Net and the application of this in the chain aforementioned. As a result, this protocol proved to be very efficient to return a feasible solution in a low processing time.

Recommendation accuracy is especially important in mobile e-commerce environments due to the limited screen size of mobile devices and relatively expensive connection costs. Mobile content tends to be fashionable and are geared for young users. This paper presents a novel method of building a more accurate recommender system for mobile content in a mobile ecommerce environment. The method is based on collaborative filtering, and models content diffusion and user preference transition and incorporates them in constructing pseudo ratings from implicit feedback data. In a variety of experiments, recommender systems based on the method showed significantly better recommendation accuracy than a pure collaborative filtering-based recommender system.

Interviews of twenty-six industrial Engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of industrial Engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

The objectives of Human Engineering (HE) are generally viewed as increasing human performance, reducing human error, enhancing personnel and equipment safety, and reducing training and related personnel costs. There are other benefits that are thoroughly consistent with the direction of the Navy of the future, chief among these is reduction of required numbers of personnel to operate and maintain Navy ships. The Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC) report on Man-Machine technology in the Navy estimated that one of the benefits from increased application of man-machine technology to Navy ship design is personnel reduction as well as improving system availability, effectiveness, and safety The objective of this paper is to discuss aspects of the human engineering design of ships and systems that affect manning requirements, and impact human-performance and safety The paper will also discuss how the application of human engineering leads to improved performance, and crew safety, and reduced workload, all of which influence manning levels. Finally, the paper presents a discussion of tools and case studies of good human engineering design practices which reduce manning.

This paper presents an integrated approach to computer-Aided Ship Design for U.S. Navy preliminary and contract design. An integrated Hull Design System (HDS), currently under development by the Hull Group of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA 32). is the vehicle for the discussion. This paper is directed toward practicing ship design professionals and the managers of the ship design process. Primary emphasis of this paper, and of the development effort currently under way, is on aiding ship design professionals in their work. Focus is on integration and management control of the extremely complex set of processes which make up naval ship design. The terminology of the Ship Designer and Design Manager is used. The reader needs no familiarity with the technologies of computerscience.
