Chronic supplementation of omega-3 can improve body composition and maximal strength, but does not change the resistance to neuromuscular fatigue

Purpose: The present study aimed to determine whether supplementation with omega-3 fatty acid (N-3) contributes to improving body composition, strength performance, and neuromuscular fatigue resistance in physically active men. Methods: The study was randomized, double–blind, and placebo controlled. 15 males were recruited and randomly assigned into two groups, N-3 supplementation (GN-3;N = 7) and placebo supplementation (GP;N = 8). Supplementation with N-3 or a placebo (safflower oil) was administered for 28-days at 1.4 g·day⁻¹. During this period, physical activity was monitored (internal load = volume × perceived exertion scale). Before and after the supplementation period, body composition, one maximum repetition of knee extension (1RM), and maximum repetitions of knee extension with 70 % of 1RM load (RMs) pre and post an incremental running protocol until exhaustion were measured. Results: ANOVA two way (p < 0.05) revealed a decrease in body fat mass (GP before: 8.3 ± 2.1 kg × after: 7.7 ± 2.4 kg;GN-3 before: 12.8 ± 9.4 kg × after: 11.8 ± 9.3 kg), increase in lean mass (GP before: 61.8 ± 4.1 kg × after: 62.7 ± 3.9 kg;GN-3 before: 64.2 ± 5.8 kg × after: 66.2 ± 6.0 kg), and 1RM (GP before: 111.3 ± 29.1 kg × after: 111.3 ± 25.9 kg;GN-3 before: 115.0 ± 36.2 kg × after: 129.1 ± 39.9 kg) in the GN-3, without significant alterations in the GP and no interactions between-groups. Moreover, the absolute variation of the RMs pre and post the incremental running protocol were not significantly altered for both group (GP before: −1.1 ± 2.9 repetitions × after: −1.1 ± 2.6 repetitions;GN-3 before: −3.9 ± 2.9 repetitions × after: −5.0 ± 4.6 repetitions), with no interactions between-groups. Conclusion: Four weeks of N-3 supplementation seems to improved body composition and maximal strength of knee extension, without influencing neuromuscular fatigue resistance. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Italia.

Body composition of table tennis players: comparison between performance level and gender

The purpose of this study was to compare whole-body and segmental body composition variables of trained Brazilian table tennis players, according to different performance levels and gender. Sixty-four table tennis players (45 male and 19 female) were distributed in three groups according to performance level: international level players (ILP;12 male;8 female), national level players (NLP;14 male;6 female) and regional level players (RLP;19 male;5 female). The anthropometry measurements and body composition analysis were performed using Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Male players demonstrated higher fat-free mass (FFM), and lower fat mass (FM) and body fat percentage (%BF, p < 0.05) compared to female players in all competitive levels, however, non-significant differences were found between whole-body composition and performance level. In the comparison between the dominant and non-dominant arms, FFM, fat-free soft tissue mass (FFSTM) and bone mineral density (BMD) were higher in the dominant arm (p < 0.05) compared to the non-dominant arm in all competitive levels, however, the male ILP group presented lower FFM and FFSTM in the dominant arm compared to the NLP, while the female ILP group presented higher BMD compared to the NLP and RLP. In conclusion, male table tennis players presented higher FFM and lower FM and %BF than female players and the dominant arm presented higher FFM and BMD than the non-dominant, possibly due to the mechanical impact-load imposed by time of table tennis practice. © 2015, Springer-Verlag Italia.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of interval and continuous training on the body mass gain and adiposity levels of rats fed a high-fat diet. Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups, standard diet and high-fat diet, and received their respective diets for a period of four weeks without exercise stimuli. After this period, the animals were randomly divided into six groups (n=8): control standard diet (CS), control high-fat diet (CH), continuous training standard diet (CTS), continuous training high-fat diet (CTH), interval training standard diet (ITS), and interval training high-fat diet (ITH). The interval and continuous training consisted of a swimming exercise performed over eight weeks. CH rats had greater body mass gain, sum of adipose tissues mass, and lower serum high density lipoprotein values than CS. The trained groups showed lower values of feed intake, caloric intake, body mass gain, and adiposity levels compared with the CH group. No significant differences were observed between the trained groups (CTS versus ITS and CTH versus ITH) on body mass gains and adiposity levels. In conclusion, both training methodologies were shown to be effective in controlling body mass gain and adiposity levels in high-fat diet fed rats. © 2016 Guilherme L. da Rocha et al.

Indigenous knowledge management to enhance community resilience to tsunami risk: lessons learned from Smong traditions in Simeulue island, Indonesia

Knowledge accumulation and production embedded in communities through social interactions meant that the Smong tradition of indigenous knowledge of tsunami risk successfully alerted people to the 2004 tsunami, on the island of Simeulue, in Aceh, Indonesia. Based on this practical example, an indigenous management model was developed for Smong information. This knowledge management method involves the transformation of indigenous knowledge into applicable ways to increase community resilience, including making appropriate decisions and taking action in three disaster phases. First, in the pre-disaster stage, the community needs to be willing to mainstream and integrate indigenous knowledge of disaster risk reduction issues into related activities. Second, during disasters, the Smong tradition should make the community able to think clearly, act based on informed decisions, and protect themselves and others by using their indigenous knowledge. Last, in the post-disaster phase, the community needs to be strong enough to face challenges and support each other and 'building back better' efforts, using local resources. The findings for the Smong tradition provide valuable knowledge about community resilience. Primary community resilience to disasters is strongly related to existing knowledge that triggers appropriate decisions and actions during pre-disaster, disaster, and post-disaster phases.

Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Influence of very short rest period lengths on repeated one maximun repetition bench press performance

Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to compare different rest period lengths between consecutive one maximum repetition bench press attempts on performance and ratings of perceived exertion. Method: Eighteen trained men (27.95. ±. 4.25 years;81.00. ±. 9.21. kg;174.62. ±. 3.34. cm;bench press relative strength 1.33. ±. 0.11. kg/kg of body mass) participated in three randomly ordered sessions that required two consecutive one maximum repetition bench press attempts with 20, 40, or 60-s rest between attempts. Results: The Cochran . Q analysis showed no significant differences in the ability to successfully perform a second one maximum repetition attempt with 20, 40, or 60-s rest between attempts (p = 0.882). Specifically, no significant differences were found in the successful completion of the first and second attempts for the 20-s (p = 0.317), 40-s (p = 0.083), and 60-s (p = 0.157) trials, respectively. Briefly, for both 20 and 60-s rest conditions δ% = 88.88% of subjects successfully performed the second attempt and, for the 40-s protocol, only δ% = 83.33% completed. For the pre and post-set ratings of perceived exertion, the shorter rest period (20-s) promoted significantly higher values compared to the longer rest periods (pre-set ratings of perceived exertion, . p = 0.04;post-set ratings of perceived exertion, . p = 0.023). Conclusions: The results of this study can be applied to recreationally trained individuals with the intent of generating a time-efficient process for conducting a valid and reliable one maximum repetition bench press assessment. © 2016 Consejería de Turismo y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía.
