Decade-long performance of constructed wetlands in the dairy industry following an aerated facultative pond

Long-term data are essential for decision-making in the operation of constructed wetlands;however, such data are scarce. In the present study, a subsurface flow CW system was monitored over a 10-year period for the treatment of wastewater from the dairy industry. Prior to the CW, an aerated facultative lagoon was operated, and its data were also included in the study. The integration of both natural treatment systems (Lagoon + CW) revealed synergy in the combined removal of pollutants and nutrients. Up until the seventh year of operation, the integration of the systems removed more than 98% of COD, BOD5, and TSS, as well as 99.8%, 96.5%, and 71.3% of oils and greases, ammoniacal nitrogen, and total phosphorus, respectively. Surfactants, oils, and greases were entirely removed. The presence of significant clogging and surface flow from the seventh year onwards led to a reduction in treatment efficiency, indicating that this is the maximum recommended operating time for CWs following an aerated facultative lagoon in the dairy industry. After this period, all substrates should be replaced. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Statistical trends of rainfall (annual and seasonal rainfalls) in Kerala, India were characterised using the 44-years (1980–2023) data of Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) version 2. Monthly rainfall data were collected from the selected fifty locations which represent the state as a whole, and the collected data were then categorised into annual as well as seasonal (winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon) datasets based on the classification proposed by Indian Meteorological Organisation (IMD). Lag-1 autocorrelation, modified Mann Kendall (mMK), Pettitt test and Theil-Sen’s slope methods were used to determine the statistical characteristics of rainfalls in Kerala. Mean rainfalls were 3124 mm, 66 mm, 527 mm, 1667 mm and 862 mm, respectively, for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon periods. mMK based statistical trend analysis revealed an overall decreasing trend characteristics in annual (-0.54 mm.y⁻¹), monsoon (-1.20 mm.y⁻¹), and post-monsoon (-0.93 mm.y⁻¹) seasons whereas winter and summer rainfalls showed an increasing trend (0.67 mm.y⁻¹ and 3.40 mm.y⁻¹, respectively) for the state as a single unit. Pettitt test indicated four dominant periods of change in rainfall characteristics in the study area that spanned over the decades of 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010, in which major changes in annual and seasonal rainfalls were occurred during 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. Theil-Sen’s slope-based estimation of rate of change in rainfall showed an average variation of -4.33 mm.y⁻¹, 0.17 mm.y⁻¹, 6.27 mm.y⁻¹, -6.54 mm.y⁻¹ and − 3.28 mm.y⁻¹ for annual, winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively. Contamination of aquatic and terrestrial organisms by Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), emerging contaminants, is widespread, as these compounds are present in water, soil, air, and food, owing to their environmental persistence. PFAS exposure induces biochemical process alterations associated with the disruption of the antioxidant defense system in several species. This review aims to discuss how PFAS-induced antioxidant system alterations lead to changes in biochemical processes in different organisms exposed to these pollutants. This disruption, then leads to an imbalance in antioxidant defense systems, contributing to the formation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which, in turn, can be exacerbate oxidative stress, induce cellular damage, enhance lipid peroxidation, destabilize lysosomal membranes, and cause genotoxic effects, ultimately compromising DNA integrity. In acute tests, PFAS have led to mortality, growth inhibition, diminished behavioral and locomotor abilities, and reproductive impairment. PFAS-induced effects differ with varying species or types of substances, and further bioaccumulation through food chains exacerbates environmental contamination, carrying considerable risks. These findings demonstrate the complex and enduring impact of PFAS on environmental health, emphasizing the importance of this review in corroborating studies on sub-lethal toxicity in exposed organisms and how these effects reflect on the environment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

To enhance production planning efficiency, it's crucial to have well-structured models that align with metaheuristic and other optimization techniques. This research conducts a comparative analysis of three unique metaheuristic methods: sanitized-teaching-learning-based optimization (sTLBO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Differential Evolution (DE) with a termination criterion of equal number of functional evaluations. The primary focus lies on profit-maximizing production planning within a single-level framework, encompassing intricate domain constraints, nonlinear costs, budget limitations and raw material constraints. The paper introduces three correction-based solution approaches. Upon evaluating 300 distinct instances of the problem, the study reveals that s-TLBO integrated with correction-based approach 1 and 3 consistently outperforms the other methods when it comes to devising optimal production plans for a Saudi Arabian petrochemical industry. This industry scenario involves 24 products, 54 processes, and three raw materials. © 2024 IEEE.

Efficient production planning requires well-structured models compatible with metaheuristic and other optimization techniques. This study compares three established metaheuristic methods - sanitized-teaching-learning-based optimization (s-TLBO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Differential Evolution (DE) with a termination criterion of equal number of functional evaluations - for profit-maximizing production planning. The focus is on a single-level problem involving complex constraints, non-linear costs, budget and raw material limitations. The paper presents two solution strategies: a penalty-based and a correction-based approach. Analyzing 300 unique instances of the problem reveals that s-TLBO implemented with correction-based approach consistently outperforms the other methods in devising optimal production plans for two Saudi Arabian petrochemical industries with 24 products, 54 processes, and three raw materials for plant 1 and two raw materials for plant 2. © 2024 IEEE.

Analysis of synthetic natural gas injection into charcoal blast furnace

Recently, the synthetic natural gas (SNG) has been available for large consumers in the Brazilian domestic market. The SNG is a suitable fuel with potential use to several processes and facilities of the steel industry. This paper investigates the injection of SNG into charcoal blast furnaces as a substitute for granular charcoal charged from the top and pulverized charcoal injections with potential increase of productivity and decrease of specific CO2 emissions. In order to study the effect of replacement of granular charcoal and injection of pulverized charcoal the well known Blast Furnace Five Fluid Model (BF-FFM) is applied to describe detailed phenomena within the process. This model treats the blast furnace as a five-phase reactor, accounting for gas, lump solids (raw iron ore, sinter, pellets and granular charcoal), hot metal, pulverized charcoal, and molten slag. The model is based on conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and chemical species numerically solved based on the finite volume method (FVM). The SNG has high amount of H2 and strongly affects the inner conditions of the reactor and only a comprehensive model with detailed chemical reaction rates can properly predict the inner parameters of the process and hence furnish useful information to design smooth operational conditions. The simulation results obtained in this study indicated that smooth operations using SNG up to 25 N m3/t of pig iron could be achieved simultaneously by increasing the productivity up to 58% and with a decrease of 40 kg/thm on the granular charcoal charged. © 2013 Brazilian Metallurgical, Materials and Mining Association.

This study aims to find out and explore information on cattle farmers in utilizing their dung as alternative energy-biogas in their daily activities. By using quantitative descriptive research methods and Likert scale for data analysis on 50 respondents, resulting that as many as 46% of respondents agreed that biogas as an alternative energy and want to have it as much as 54%. However, in the statement that they will build biogas, most of them answered doubtfully, which is 70%. Doubts in building biogas are caused by, among others: the lack of sufficient information related to biogas, the high investment costs at the beginning of the biogas reactor construction, the are several biogas digesters do not work, the useful life and function of the biogas reactor, and the availability of land as a biogas reactor. As a solution to these problems, IEC program (Information, Education and Communication) can be done to the community, especially farmers about biogas as a whole;program synergies among the government, academics and biogas builders to encourage biogas development as an alternative energy while enhancing environmental quality. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Chronic wounds have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life, necessitating the management of pain, infection, bleeding, and emotional challenges. Debridement, which involves the removal of nonviable tissue, is crucial for promoting wound healing. In addition to surgical methods, cost-effective alternatives such as local solutions and ointments with biological properties have been explored. The use of natural compounds with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and collagen-synthesizing abilities holds promise for wound healing. This in vitro and in vivo preclinical study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of a wound healing ointment containing bioactive ingredients derived from medicinal plants (extracts, essential oils, and vegetable oils). The chemical composition of the ointment was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to gain insights into its synergistic action. Preclinical tests were conducted following standardized protocols. FTIR analysis revealed similarities between the product’s spectrum and that of bioactive compounds. The in vitro tests demonstrated that all formulations of the ointment induced no cell death, DNA damage, or acute toxicity in cell cultures (p < 0.05). No lethal dose was observed, indicating the safety of the ointment at all concentrations. The ointment also stimulated a notably more organized, significantly higher collagen production compared to control groups (p < 0.05). In vivo preclinical analyses also demonstrated no adverse responses being effective in the healing process compared to the control group (silver sulfadiazine) in terms of wound contraction and ulcer re-epithelization (p < 0.05). Significantly higher means of wound contraction were observed in the groups treated with the bioactive-containing ointment when compared to both the positive control group (sulfadiazine) and the control untreated groups (p < 0.05). This study aims to envision the future of banking and the FinTech industry collaboration by the triggers for change based on trends watching in current conditions. Envisioning is the ability to describe the impact of changes in the business environment caused by the various trigger changes observed in trend watching. The current conditions and the triggers of change based on trend-watching are issues and considerations in envisioning collaboration between banking and the Fintech industry. The research methodology uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The study surveyed 100 respondents, each representing the banking and FinTech sectors, who understand the issues related to the collaboration of the two industries. In addition, to complement the survey data, this study also conducted Focus Group Discussions and In-depth Interviews as a qualitative approach. The study's results by analyzing current conditions and triggers of change based on trend watching will represent a picture of the future of banking and FinTech industry collaboration. This research will expect a significant contribution to government regulations/policies and a positive contribution and support on the IT/IS side, especially in applied technology and architecture/business models for collaboration in the future of collaboration banking and the FinTech Industry that follow. © 2022 IEEE.
